What is Service Factor?
Reply
Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
Reply
We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
Reply
A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

I'm trying to find a replacement motor for my pool pump but my model number doesn't match what you have listed as the model number. My model number begins with a C48 and yours begins with an SP. Please help.
Reply
What we have listed on our chart pages is the pump model number. The model number you have will just identify the motor. If you look on the plastic housing on the pump there should be a sticker which will have the pump model number. You can usually find this by the discharge port on the pump. Once you locate it you can choose the correct replacement motor. Be certain to change the shaft seal and gaskets as needed. You can use our >How to guide if you need help.

Will the AO Smith UCT1102 cost less to run than the UST1102?
Reply
Yes, the UCT1102 will cost less to operate compared to the standard UST1102. Depending on how the motor is cared for, it should last several years. When replacing the motor, I would recommend buying a tune up kit based on your pump model and age.

I need to replace the motor on a Hayward Super Pump 3/4 hp. Can I go up to a 1 hp and what difference does that make? If so, does anything else need to be changed out? This is for an inground 16' x 32' pool.
Reply
You could go up to a 1 HP motor which would give you a higher gallon per minute rating (GPM). On a typical pool a 3/4 HP Super pump will have an output of 50 GPM's where a 1 HP will have an output of 65 GPM's. You would want to make sure that your filter could handle this increased flow rating from the 1 HP motor your filter should have a label on it which says max flow rating, this would let you know how many GPM's the filter can handle. If you increased your motor to 1 HP you would need to also replace your impeller to a 1 HP impeller, we would also suggest a Super Pump tune kit.

I have a old Jacuzzi 94027110 and I want to know if this motor will replace the one I have? If so is there any special wiring or anything else that will need to be done or can I just take the old motor off and put this one into the housing and wire it? I would rather not buy a whole new pump unless it is absolutely necessary.
Reply
Yes the UST1102 would be the replacement motor for your 1 HP Jacuzzi Magnum pump and there would be no different wiring required, we would suggest a Jacuzzi Magnum tune up kit when replacing your motor which includes a shaft seal, o-rings, gaskets and lubricant. Typically if you use your old shaft seal it will not mate up properly which will cause leaking.

Hi John, You would be able to go down to a smaller horserpower which would save you on operational costs. When reducing your motor size you will need to replace the impeller on your Hayward Super Pump. So if you wanted to go down to 1/2 HP you would require the Hayward 1/2 HP Motor and the Hayward 1/2 HP Impeller. We also always suggest the Hayward Super Pump Tune Up kit when replacing a motor.

We just purchased a property with pool, the pump motor is C48L2N1-34C2. The pool has not been used in 3 years. Power is applied to the pump but it doesn't run - no hum, etc. What should I check?
Reply
Hi Bill, just a note first: If your motor is labeled C48L2N1-34C2, that is a full rated ST1102 motor instead of an uprated UST1102 about 1/2 HP difference. Now on your dead motor. Using a meter, check that you actualyl have power to the terminal of the motor and that it is the same voltage as how the motor is configured, 115V or 230V. Also check that the connection are tight. Then take the basket out and see if the impeller moves freely. If no, the bearing on the motor are probably shot. If impeller movers freely, check the start capacitor at the electrical end of the motor. See our guides under "pool pumps" for detailed instructions on any of these procedures.

The only other item that would be highly recommended to replace would be the shaft seal ( 5110-11 ) As to the other o-rings in the system, it is up to the age of the whole pump. If it is a couple of years old, I would not worry about it. If it is older than 5, there is a kit that contains all the o-rings and the shaft seal - it is a GOKIT3. Other than those, just inspect the impeller and difusser for any wear and tear.

I have a UST1102 CET51ABM Model # C48K2N143C1C motor of unknown age, on a Hayward Super II pump without a model/serial number (the label on the wet side of the pump is blank). Should I replace the impeller with the 3/4 HP SP3007-C, or am I better off getting the SPX3010-C? Is there any way to guess the model/ serial number of my Hayward Super II pump?

what would cause the water level in the strainer basket to go down just below the pipe coming into the strainer?
Reply
You most likely have a bad pump lid gasket or bad a bad o-ring gasket. what is happening is the bad seal is allowing air to enter the pump cavity and not allowing the pump to fully prime. This can be harmful to your motor. I would recommend identifying your pump manufacturer and model in order to match the correct lid gasket. If this does not resolve your issue, I would identify the same information for the diverter valve.

The flow rate doesn't only depend on the horsepower of the motor but also the impeller for that pump and every pump has a different impeller. But it doesn't stop there, it also depends on resistance or the distance between the pump and main drain. All of these factors come into play with the flow rate.

IS THE A O SMITH POOL MOTOR # UST1102 THE REPLACEMENT FOR
THE USQ1102. I WANT TO MAKE SURE IT WILL FIT THE OTHER EXISTING PARTS.

Hello John, You really want to stay with USQ1102 because your UST1102 is a cface rather than a square flange. Your frames would not match up. Stay with the one you currently have USQ1102.

Hello John, you need to make sure you are going with a motor that has the same output that you are getting from your current motor. If you go with a UST1102 your amps are running at 15.0/7.5 SF is 1.1 and HP at 1.1, you are actually going down from the motor your USN1102 motor. Your SF, HP, and AMPs would go down if you went with the UST1102.

Can I replace my US Motors model# K63CXEPY-4766 1HP motor with this motor?
Reply
The replacement motor for the K63CXEPY-4766 is the Motor 56j Thrd Full Ee 1hp (b654). The total HP on your current motor is 1.40 and the UST1102 is 1.10. The weight of the impeller, installed on motors will differ depending on the total horsepower. By decreasing the horsepower, the impeller will be to heavy, potentially causing the motor to fail. It is best recommended to replace your motor with the B654, doing so, this will allow you to use your existing impeller. Don't forget to replace the Pool Pump Shaft Seal.

I have a 1HP UST1102 motor and i'm look to down size to a 3/4 HP that will fit the same pump housing. What motors do you have that I can select from?
Reply
This pump differs from mine in that yours does not indicate Rotation - mine says CCWPE. Also the Amperage is slightly higher. Yet they are both C48K2N143C1C. Why the differences?
Reply
Good Morning Pete, This motor is compatible with the C48K2N143C1C, But they are not identical. This motor is up-rated. That is why the amperage is higher. For the rotation you will have to view with back of the motor off to see which way the shaft is spinning. If there is anything else I can help you with. let me know.

The one you offer has slightly different specs than what I am replacing. For example, the SF rating is 1.5 on the old motors as opposed to the one you offer which is 1.1. Also the max amp load is slightly lower on the old ones than the one you offer (14.6/7.3 vs..15.0/7.5). I also don't see K48L2N104 in the alternate parts list Please advise...

Yes, the UST1102 is going to be the replacement. UCT1102 is the energy efficient replacement that uses 2 amps less while keeping the same horsepower so saving money on your energy bill. STS1102 is the dual speed replacement that will allow you to run it at high, 1HP, and low, 1/4HP, which has the potential to save you even more money. The real energy saver is going to be the ECM16CU which is the variable speed replacement. With the variable speed you will be able to adjust the RPM's to where it is going to be the most efficient for your system. The seal kit you want is the GOKIT3SALT.

Hello Randy - One of the long time rules is to keep the bearing temperatures under 200°. There is a thermal overload protector which will shut the motor down at 256°. This would be the temperature of the winding, at the hottest point.

Hi, Ron. It sounds like the motor may be overheating shutting off and then turning back on once it cools down. This can be caused if the motor was replaced with a less than equal THP, a bad impeller and or a faulty thermal overload.

The motor is not submersible, but it can withstand average rainfall. However, for best results, you should keep the motor as shielded from the elements as possible.

I am replacing the motor on Hayward SP2607X10 Super pump on a Salt Water Pool. I noticed in the forum you recommended this A.O Smith but while shopping in pool parts it recommends the Pureline PL2228. Will either of these work for my replacement. I like the fact that the Pureline has a 2 year Warranty. Which would give me better service in your opinion?.
Reply
If you are replacing the original motor that came with the complete pump then yes, either motor will work. The Pureline is just another option being our line and should work just the same. It carries the same warranty as the A.O. Smith as well.

I have an a.o.smith model #ST1102 and the max amp on it is 18.6/9.3 and the new one is less. will that make a difference

As long as you are matching the exact model, part or catalog number on the new motor with the one you currently have then a difference in amps will not make a difference.

What replaces the A.O.Smith st1102 pool pump motor?

That is the correct replacement motor for the ST1102. It is the ST1102. If you need a complete pump then you would need to locate the model number on the front plastic pump housing that the motor bolts to.

What are my best options for a direct (easy) replacement for a Century UST1102 / C48K2N143C1C HP 1, SF 1.1 FR 56J on a Hayward Super Pump running on 115volts in a salt water pool? Would a more efficient option be available to me and what kind of energy savings would be expected? Also, a local store said they have just switched to only using the original Gold Hayward motors (more expensive) for replacement due to longevity issues with others. Current motor lasted 3 yrs. Any thoughts?

Hi, CLH. You can use the UCT1102 as an energy efficient replacement option. You can save approximately 33%. The OEM Hayward motors and these aftermarket options are manufactured by the same company. There is not a major difference in the quality of the OEM and Aftermarket options.

I bought the A.O. Smith 1 HP Round Flange Up Rate Motor and replaced my old 1hp motor that had burned out. While the system is running, the water pressure is lower than before. The heat pump is not able to operate due to low pressure and the return pressure is definitely lower than it used to be. The filter is at 9 PSI though which is in the normal range. It used to be at 10-11 before. Before reinstalling I did clean the impeller. What could be some reasons for the low pressure?
Reply
Keith, If you just replaced the motor, you may have air in the lines. If you have an air relief valve on your filter, you can purge the air manually. Once the air has been purged, you will see an increase in pressure.

When we went to open our pool this spring, the motor was sealed (Hawyard Super Pump - 1hp). A service man took it off and got the motor spinning again, but we are thinking that the bearings are starting to get a bit loud and I'm curious if there is any way of estimating how long the motor may continue, or should we be ordering a replacement motor now to have on hand.

It is tough to predict how long the motor will last. Loud bearings are a sign of the motor going out so I would not recommend to replace it unless it becomes to loud. If the motor is in good enough condition you may want to consider just replacing the bearings.

Gary, If you have the SP2607X10, the original motor should have been a 1HP (equivalent to the UST1102). If it was, you will have to purchase the matching impeller and seals if you want to go to a higher horse power motor.

Hello, The st1102 is a full-rated motor, while the UST1102 is uprated. When calculating the THP (total horse power) on each of these motors the ST1102 thp is 1.5 while the ust1102 thp is 1.1. We recommend staying with the st1102 that is on your current pump. I have a Hayward Super II (SP3010X15AZ) that has a Century 1.5HP pump. I recently replaced an old DE filter with a Hayward S244T 24in sand filter, and I believe the motor is too strong for my setup (I think I'm seeing sand/material/dust always pushing through the filter material and accumulating on the bottom of the pool). Anyhow, is it possible to install a 1HP motor in the same pump?

Would this be the right replacement for this part number 184984. Including picture
The UST1102 can replace the B228SE, but it will be more expensive to operate. The B228SE is the Super Efficient 1 HP uprated model, and only uses 12 amps; whereas the standard UST1102 uses 15 amps. That difference in amps will make up the difference in cost between the motor pretty quickly, depending on how you run it.

Yes, the UST1102 is the correct motor replacement for your 7-184948-22. The Jacuzzi Magnum 1UMF-S uses the GOKIT14 gasket kit, and the correct impeller is dependent on which style you have. The seal kit recommended to use with a chlorine pool is the GOKIT3 and for a saltwater pool is the GOKIT3SALT. As far as a timer that will depend on the voltage running to your motor however click here to view the most commonly used models.

Based on the pics, can you confirm this is the right replacement, and provide a recommendation for energy efficient and variable speed options? Do you have a recommendation between energy efficient and variable speed? I don't really see what makes the 'energy efficient' version energy efficient.
Thanks!
Hi, Justin. This UST1102 is the correct replacement. Your other option is either the UCT1102 which is the single speed energy efficient option. The UST1102 is uses 7.5/15 amps at 230/115 volts, the UCT1102 motor uses 5.5/11 amps at 230/115 volts. The variable speed option is the ECM16CU. Whichever option you decide to go with, you will also need the Hayward Super Pump Tune Up Kit - GOKIT3 or GOKIT3SALT.

Thank you for the info. I would rather not run an electric motor within or close to its service factor uprated HP. Since my impeller flow rate requires a fully rated 1HP motor, I will stick with the 1 HP to stay out of the service factor range and extend the life of the motor. Looks like my run capacitor is bad, so I'll be changing it for now. But my motor is 15 years old and will eventually fail.

Yes, I would suggest using a saltwater seal as it may help protect the new motor better. 1. Any CA Title 20 compliant replacement motors? Recommendations?
2. Can I use a 3/4HP A.O. Smith UST1072 - CA Title 20 compliant)? Any disadvantages?
3. I have GOKIT1, is it compatible with above motors?

Hello Michael. The Century Motor UST1102 is a replacement motor for the Hayward SP2670007x10. This motor differs from the original motor SPX2607Z1MTG but is a replacement. When replacing the motor, a new shaft seal should also be installed. Pump Shaft Seal 3/4" PS-201

I have a Century pump that is a few years old and it run hot. I think it was rewired incorrectly by the person who put it in. The casing is scolding hot after about 5 minutes of running it. (when rain or water hit it it steams). You can see by the pic that the labels are turning colors from the heat as well as the black casing. Can this motor replace my motor? I am worried about a fire and just want to put in a whole new motor. I included pics of the label and model number. Thank you
Yes, the UST1102 motor will replace your HST110.

Hi Sandy, This is NOT the correct replacement motor, you would require this Hayward 40 GPM Replacement Motor unfortunately we are currently out of stock on that motor.

Hi Sandy, We are not 100% sure if the hose will fit directly onto the pump, if not then let us know and we should carry some adapters which should be able to make your current hose work, or possibly suggest a replacement hose.

I currently have a Century ST1102, would this UST1102 be a replacement? If so, what seal kit would I need?
Thanks Mark
Reply
No, the UST1102 is not the correct replacement for the ST1102. The impeller for your ST1102 would be too heavy for the UST1102 and it would cause the motor to fail prematurely. We recommend going with another ST1102 motor.

My Hayward Pool Pump is old so I can not read the tag for the model. The current motor is an old Marathon Motor.
I am looking for a Century motor to replace that Marathon Motor. It is 1HP, Frame 56 J , Code L.
The question is can I replace that Marathon Motor with Century UST1102 motor ???
Yes, the UST1102 will replace your Marathon motor model 5KC49NN2135X.

Thanks for your quick reply. I have 2 more questions 1. If I replace my Marathon Motor with Century UST1102, Beside the new shaft seal, do I need new Impeller ?? 2. What is the main different between UST1102 and ST1102 ?? Thank again
Reply
You would not a new impeller unless your existing one was damaged. The ST1102 has a higher total HP than the UST1102. The total HP of the ST1102 is 1.5 and the total HP rating of the UST1102 is 1.1.

My bearings are shot. I have a Century Model C48K2N143B1 Motor pump also has Model SP1607Z1M.
Will this motor be a good swap for replacement?
Also do you have the back and front Bearings for the old Motor C48K2N143B1/SP1607Z1M. I have replaced these bearings before, about 15 years ago on an older Motor. This current Motor is about 9 or 10 years old. For the low cost of a couple of bearings I do not mind taking the time to rebuild the old Motor to have as a back up in the future.

I have a 1 UMF-S Magnum Force pump and a Century 7-184948-22 motor which is considered the same as the UST1102. Since owning an inground pool is new to me (moved here 4 years ago), I'm wondering what my options are re: replacing the motor? It's tripping the breaker, so figured it would be easier to replace than try to fix. Capacitor was replaced 2 years ago. Is it wise to go up to 1.5 or 2 hp? What considerations should I have in making determinations for the pump/motor? Thanks.
Reply
I typically recommend when you want to upgrade the HP of your motor it is best to change out the entire pump itself. You can change out the motor, but you also need to change out other internal parts like the impeller and diffuser. You also need to make sure your pool filter can handle your new increase HP motor. Here is a link to more information about increasing your HP of your pump...Can I Go With A Higher Horsepower Pump?
Reply
Thank you. That was helpful. Will check out the current motor and see why the power is tripping and go from there. Just that access to the electrical part of the motor is terrible and forces disconnecting the pipes and all. Could be the impeller or other moving parts not, well, moving.

Hi Taylor, yes, the Century 1.0 HP Motor - UST1102 will be a perfect replacement for your old HST110. The seals are dependant upon the pump and not the motor - let us know the model number of the pump is so we can recommend exactly what you need.

Hi - what is normal life expectancy of this motor? We replaced our Hayward Super II motor with one (Model UCT1102) in 2014 and now it's taking longer and longer to start - just hums for 15-20 seconds but runs normaly after starting. The run time per day is 4-5 hrs on average. Thank you.

Thank you for calling Inyo Pools, Typically motors last 6-8 years. However other factors can come into play like environmental, overheating, or the pump running dry. This could be the capacitor or it could simply be the motor going bad.
Reply
Can the capacitor be replaced on an AO Smith #ST1102 motor? Or does the entire motor need to be replaced when starting the motor is labored and delayed due to a faulty capacitor?

Hi Kurt, if you are sure the capacitor needs to be replaced (use this guide to check it) then you can replace the Start Capacitor 161-193 MFD - BC-161 in your ST1102 motor. Read our guide on How To Replace a Pool Pump Capacitor to be sure you do it safely.

The Century Motors models Century 1.5 HP Round Flange 56J Up Rate Motor - UST1152 or Century 1.0 HP Round Flange 56J Full Rate Motor - ST1102 would be more compatible replacement motors. Hello Jeff, yes this single speed motor is compatible to replace your motor model sp1607-z-1-mxbk however, due to California Title 20 code you are required to replace these motors with an energy efficient model. In your case, I would recommend replacing this motor with the motor model ECM16CU. We also recommend replacing the seals and gaskets when replacing a pool pump motor. Based on your motor image if this is the original motor that came with the complete pool pump then you will need the GOKIT1.
