What is Service Factor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/11/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

Hello, Patty. The "56" and the "48"  are in reference to the frame size of the motor. Normally, the 48 frames are shipped with a rubber insert you apply underneath the end of the motor and the base. They send that in case you are switching from a 56-frame to the 48-frame. If you would rather order the exact frame please use A.O. Smith 1.5 HP, 56Y Frame, Up-Rate Motor PART# B854 (B2854) click here to view.  You may even upgrade to save on electricity cost by installing the motor Variable Speed Pool Pump Motor Round Flange 1.65 HP, PART# ECM16CU click here to view. Hello Jeff, I would check the motor tags and compare, there are certain motors you need to match up SF (service factor), RPM, VOLTS, and frame. Your frame is the only thing that isn't going to change on these two motors, please compare the motor label to each motor you are interested in to see if they match up to what you currently have now. So if you have a 115v and you go with the SQ1152 it wouldn't work because that one is specifically 230v.

I have a A.O. Smith USQ1102 that has failed. The pump is a Pentair Challenger CFII-N1-1-1/2A (343234). Can I replace the existing motor with the USQ1152? Or would you suggest the B2854? Not sure why the current motor is 1hp when the pump calls for 1.5hp (it was the motor I bought with the house). Also, can you confirm the GOKIT5 is the recommended tune-up kit for my installation?
 Reply

A  Answered on 4/6/2017 by InyoPools Product Specialist Scott W.

Yes, the USQ1152 should be the motor that is on that, but the previous owner may have which it and when he did most likely changed the impeller as well to fit the motor. If you are able to read a part number on the impeller so we can confirm that you have the correct impeller for a 1.5HP motor otherwise you will have to get the 1.5HP impeller with the USQ1152. And yes, the GOKIT5 is the correct seal kit for your Challenger.

No, it does not come with a shaft seal. The replacement shaft seal is going to depend on your pump model, not your motor. If you know your pump motor I can help you with the correct shaft seal.

The pump/motor has over the past few months become quite loud. The noise is a whine more than a growl or more coarse sound. I replaced the motor several years ago and wonder if this is an indicator that the motor has a problem or that the pump itself is bad.

A  Answered on 5/21/2018 by InyoPools Product Specialist Hector F.

The best way to really be sure is by taking the motor off of the pump housing and then bench testing it to see if it continues to make the sound. If it does then that means that it is the motor bearings.

A  Answered on 3/31/2019 by InyoPools Product Specialist Lennox H.

Hi, Evelyn. The Whisperflo Pump model 011515 was design to use a 2 HP Full Rate Motor - B2843. It appears the pump was reduced to a 1.5 HP which would have required changing the internal parts to match. Since the pump is now using the USQ1152, you should replace it with what's there. You will also need to get the Whisperflo Pump Tune Up Kit - GOKIT32 or GOKIT32SALT.

Which internal parts would that be? How would I know they were changed. I replaced this motor a little over 2 yrs ago. Is that how often they need to be changed? My pool servicer did not do right by me. How can I be sure he changed the other parts?

Evelyn, The Impeller would have been changed from P/N 073130 to 073128. I'm certain that the impeller was changed or else the motor wouldn't have lasted this long. Using the larger impeller p/n 073130 with the USQ1152 motor will cause it to overheat immediately.

 Reply

A  Answered on 4/30/2019 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Hi Lee, No this is not the correct replacement motor for the motor you have included in the photo. You will need this B2982 1 HP 56Y Dual Speed Motor the B2982 will be the correct replacement for you. When replacing your motor we would suggest a tune up kit but we would need to know the make and model of your pump, common models would be the Pentair Whisperflo, Jandy Stealth, Pentair Challenger, etc.. If you could supply us this information or send a photo of your complete pump showing the basket area of your pump where the pipe goes in and out (wide shot of Pump) then we would be able to suggest the proper tune-up kit. Simply click on the reply link below to supply this information or upload your photos.

Hi Lisa, Yes this is the correct replacement motor the motor for the C48L2PA105. We do always suggest a Seal Kit when replacing a motor. To determine the proper seal kit we will need to know your pump make and model information, common pump names would be Sta-Rite Dura-Glas, Dyna Glas, Dyna Max, etc.. To supply this information click the reply link below, also if you could send a few photos those are always helpful as well. If you send photos then take a close up shot of the motor label as well as a wide shot of the complete pump to include the pipes going in and out of the pump. To supply photos simply click the reply link below and upload your photos. Once we get any of this information we can make the proper recommendation.

So the SQ1152 actually has a higher total horsepower of 2.2 because it is a full rated motor and the USQ1152 is an uprated motor which has a total horsepower of 1.65. Always multiply a motor's labeled horsepower with the service factor to get the total horsepower.

The gaskets are matched to the pump housing and not the motor. This is your parts diagram: Pentair / Pac Fab Challenger CHII / CFII SeriesThere are two versions of gasket kits that are compatible with Challenger, one for the High Head and one for the Medium head. If you can see your pump's model number, the CF models need the GOKIT73, the CH models use the GOKIT5 or the GOKIT5SALTIf you just want the shaft seal, instead of the whole kit you would need the Shaft Seal or the Heavy Duty Shaft Seal (For Saltwater Pools)

Hello Kenneth, the direct replacement for your motor model EUSQ1152 is the 5238-232. The letter "E' at the beginning is associated with the manufacturer Emerson also known as Nidec. We also recommend replacing the seals and gaskets when replacing a pool pump motor. Here is our "Finding the Tune-Up Kit for Your Pool Pump" guide that should assist you with that.

Could you recommend the proper replacement motor for my Flotec pool pump. I think it is a Century 1.5 HP Square Flange 48Y Up Rate Motor - USQ1152, pictured on your website. However, I wonder why the Max load amps are higher on the USQ1152 than my current pump and if this creates more energy consumption.

Hello Michael.  The Century Motors USQ1152 is a compatible replacement motor for the motor model C48K2PA105.  The USQ1152 rated amperage of 9.6 is greater than the C48K2PA105 rated amperage of 7.6.  The USQ1152 utilizes more electrical energy.  The Century 1.5 HP Square Flange 48Y Up Rate EE Motor - UQC1152 has an amperage rating of 8.0.   Either motor is a compatible replacement.  The Tune Up Kit Sta-Rite Flo Tech/AquaTools/Dyna-Glas - GOKIT44 contains the necessary parts to complete the new motor installation.  Attached please find the Flotec AT251001 & AT251501 exploded parts diagram for reference.
