What is Service Factor?

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?

We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?

A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

Do the B2982T automatically come on when temp reaches freezing?

The Century B2982T does not turn on automatically when the temperature drops to freezing. If you are expecting a freeze, you will need to keep the pump running.

Does this pump have a priming feature, where the motor always starts at high speed?

The motor does not have an automatic prime feature. You can program the motor to start in high speed and then switch to low speed.

If I purchase a B2982T to replace my Challenger 1.5 hp single speed pump #346206, do I need to also replace the impeller as well as the shaft seals?

Hello Tom - Model 346206 is an uprated 1.5HP Challenger pump. The service factor is 1.1. This gives your pump a total HP of 1.65. This is the same as the B2982T. You would not need to replace the impeller since both motors have the same total HP. We would recommend replacing the Challenger pump seals.

My installation does not have the 8 inch clearance required from the top of the motor for the hinged cover to be opened. Can the cover be removed?

Hello Andrew - The plastic cover does provide some moisture intrusion protection, but more importantly it provides UV protection to the LCD display. It could be removed, however I can't guarantee what the results to prolonged exposure of the keypad and screen will be when directly exposed to the elements. Ideally the product would be best utilized by leaving the cover in place.

I'm having a terrible time with this motor. When running, it's great BUT it has a hard time switching via the timer from low to hi speed. It almost always throws a fault 7 (over current - rotate the shalf...) - once you rotate the half a tiny bit it starts back up fine. BUT why is this so unreliable!
Also when wiring, what or why is there a third post (or fourth if you count the ground)? So there is l1, l2, ground and then another spot just below the ground.

Hi Tim, According to Century it could be a shaft seal issue. When wiring the motor you would use L1, L2 and the Ground, no other terminal should be used.

How do you know the square bolt alignment is going to be the same size of the one you are taking off. There are different sizes. This has happened to me.

Hi Roy, The Square Flange is a universal bolt alignment. If you can provide your pump model or the part, cat or mod number of your current motor; I can confirm if this motor will mount to your pump.

Looks like my 5 year old Hayward SP1607Z1M died over the winter... justifying my desire to replace with a timer/variable unit touch as this one (B2982T).
1. From what I've provided, can you confirm that this sounds like the appropriate replacement? (I have a Square Flange Hayward Super Pump)
2. Can you confirm the length (long dimension along shaft) of the motor? (Things are "tight" in my current arrangement- hoping this motor is comparable in physical size to my current)

I have a Jandy Model # JHP1.0 pump and the motor just quit it is an emerson model EB654 which motor will be correct replacement for my application. I guess I have to replace it with a Variable speed one

Does this motor come without a digital controller? It matches my requirements for replacement but my system already has a timer built in (on - off) and a variable speed switch. Would rather not spend the money for something I will not use.

with A.O. Smith motor Part 7-177450-03 230 volt.
Would this motor fit, and are the impellers hard to change? Does it come with a gasket.

Yes, you can switch that motor with out changing the impeller. We do recommend you change the shaft seal which would be a ps-1000.

Hello, Unfortunately the timer control can not be repaired/replaced. The control is wired internally to the motor. There is no way to bypass it.

I'm replacing a 48Y AO Smith SQ1102 / CET-50-ABM / C48L2PA105C4 motor wired up in 230V. Is the 56Y based B2982T a good replacement? Do I need to replace just the shaft seal or do I need a whole seal kit? Can I please get the correct part numbers for the shaft seal vs the seal kit?

Hi, The B2982T will be a good replacement even though the frame size is a 56Y, you will have to remove the motor support in order for the 56Y frame motor to fit if you have a motor base. The seal will need to be replaced, if you can provide the model of the pump housing we can provide you with the correct seals.

Hi, The B2980T or B2981T motors can be used to convert your P6RA6E-205L pump from a single speed to a dual speed pump. I will also recommend that you get the Max E Pro Tune Up Kit (GOKIT79).

I am replacing hayward tristar (century) sp3210z1be, part # 7-196336-20, and want a cycle option which will reduce electric costs and noise levels. Is this a legitimate option? If so what else will I need to replace to properly install

The dual speed motor would be a great energy saver. Another option would be part number UQC1102, which is an energy efficient replacement motor. Then to complete your motor replacement, you would want to also replace the shaft seal. If you have a chlorine pool it'll be part number 5112-216 and if you have a saltwater pool it's part number 5250-250.

Is there a way to wire a booster pump into this pool pump motor? Currently my booster pump is wired into the load side of the pump timer, but since I'd be switching to the dual speed motor with the digital timer, is it possible to wire the booster pump timer to the digital timer? I'm assuming that the digital timer will replace the existing pool pump timer.

Hi, Gonzo. Unfortunately, you're unable to wire a booster pump to the controller on this timer. You will have to leave the booster pump wire to the timer and wire this motor directly to the breaker.

Currently looking to replace Sta-Rite 1 HP single speed with a duel speed with controller. Current Model number is MPRA6E-147L. Is this the model I need for my current setup? Is there any advantage to using say a 1.5 HP over a 1 HP motor? What other parts would I need to replace when I replace the motor?

I would need to know your filter model to see if it can handle the increased flow rate of going to a 1.5HP, you would also have to upgrade your impeller and diffuser, 5057-08B and 5057-09B. If you stick with the 1HP dual speed then you will need to replace the shaft seal as well, part number 5057-07.

Derek, Yes, this will fit on a Whisperflo WFE3. We also recommend replacing the seals with the GOKIT32 for chlorine or the GOKIT32SALT is you have a salt system.

Hi, Guy. The code Fault 11 refers to a Keypad error. To try to correct this issue remove the power source from the motor then reconnect the power and see if the error code goes away. If it doesn't then you will have to replace the motor.

I am looking to replace a Century C4bAB47A01 motor with something more efficient (dual speed or variable) but I cannot find a match in your search function. It is a 1.1 HP, SF 1, AMOS 6,8 at 230 VAC. FR 56J

I bought this motor from you earlier this year, without understanding the limitations of the integrated timer. I need to run the motor twice per day, in morning and evening, to avoid the high afternoon energy charges in California. The integrated timer won’t do this, it only works to start and stop once per day. Is there a way to bypass the integrated timer and instead start and stop the motor with a timeswitch twice per day in high and low speeds?

I have one of these... 2 years old. problem: The little SCREEN on the top of the controller has an issue.. only the right half of the screen is readable,
the left half is a solid dark blue. Can I fix that? Reset it?? Motor still runs fine, but can't set the programming bec/ I can't read all the options, you know?
Can I just get a new screen or new digital controller?? Ideas?? HELP!!

Currently, I have a pool pump motor with failing bearings that I wish to replace by a more energy efficient type. I am considering your: Pool Motor Square Flange 1 HP Full Rate Dual Speed w/ Digital Controller - B2982T as replacement for US-Motor-ASB842 (1.5 HP 3450 RPM, 18.0/9.0 amp, Service Factor 1.47; 56Y Frame-Square Flange).
The electrical ratings are different.- Please confirm that this motor is the correct [or point me to the correct replacement motor].

We, unfortunately, do not carry this version dual speed motor replacement for your model. The version we do carry would be model B983 that would need a dual speed timer model T106R unless you have a control panel with dual speed motor functionality.

Greetings. I'm checking fit for this motor as a replacement on my Challenger High Performance pump. It's presently running a Marathon model 5KC38SN6084AX, 1 hp and SF 1.25. Would this be a straight bolt on replacement? I have a Pool Pilot system and would simply set it to run 24/7 and use the timer on this motor for control... Thanks.

Thanks Hector. I may have inadvertently downsized to SF 1.25 when I replaced the original motor, thinking 1 HP is 1 HP when evidently it's not. Would it be wrong to use this higher powered one for the Challenger High Performance?

If you have not changed anything else in the pool system, the original builder had that pump on there and the original model of the Challenger matches the total horsepower of this motor then it should work fine.

Tabitha, This motor can replace your Emerson EUST1102. However, this motor is a larger diameter than the EUST1102. Also, please note that the B2982T will only work with 230v. If you have 115v, you will not be able to use a dual speed motor.

Looking to replace motor for older hayward sp 1607 1 hp. From what I read, it's not as easy replacing entire filter because of the piping. Would this be a suitable replacement t motor?

Hi, Mike. Unfortunately, this B2982T - Square Flange 1 HP Full Rate Dual Speed w/ Digital Controller will not fit the SP1607 Series pump. The B973T - Round Flange 3/4 HP Full Rate Dual Speed Motor W/ Digital Controller will if you're using 115 volts. Giving the age of that pump it will be best if you replace it entirely.

I had a brown out and it seems that the screen on the timer of my B2982T pool pump does only shows all black squares instead of the text. Is there anything I can do to get it back, and if need be, can I replace the board or the timer? The pump works fine except now I can't see the screen if I had to change the settings. I recently bought a house with a pool, first time owner of a pool. The pump is a Pentair 340039, with Century single speed motor: 1 HP, SF 1.65. I also have solar heaters on the roof, approx 30 ft up, through 2" PVC. Most of the plumbing is 2". The motor is howling... bearings are going. Should I replace with the same 1 HP/1.65 SF motor, use a 2 speed (not use low speed when using the solar), or go with a VS???

Hi, JawJa. A dual speed motor B2982T will be a simpler operation than a variable speed (ECM16SQU) which will provide you with more operating options and a better design motor. Both options require 230 volts. Whichever motor you decide to go with you will need to get the SuperFlo Pump Tune Up Kit - GOKIT78.

Also... the pump leaks water at the top... water is literally pouring out in the area between the clear screen cover and the output connection... I ordered replacement O rings and tried that... no help. Should I plan for a new pump rather than fiddle with this one??? THX (BTW; using my co email... I run a heating and AC company)

Thread was back in the Spring... I bought a new WhisperFlo 2 speed pump; 1 HP (1.65 SF), seems to work GREAT! Played with timers, rigged a controller that does the following: Runs for 10 hours a day: First 3 hours = low speed pump Next 4 hours = high speed pump Final 3 hours = low speed pump This uses less electricity, yet keeps the water moving longer and filters nicely! THX for all your input... The latest project is to rebuild the Hayward lever style backwash valve, wish me luck!

I have a single speed Jandy SHPM1.0CND 1.0HP (motor is a A.O. Smith 7-193992-06) and I would like to replace the motor with a 2 speed one and keep the wet section of the pump. Will this motor fit my current pump, and are there any other motors that might fit as well (variable/2 speed)?

So the dual speed replacement motor would be the model B981 and you cud use either as toggle switch part number 2512558-001 or dual-speed timer model T106R if you currently have an Intermatic pump timer. The variable speed replacement would be the model ECM16SQU which will already have the controller on it but requires 230 volts only.

If I currently have a Jandy Aqualink system with a PDA control, of the two pumps you mentioned, which ones can I integrate into the Aqualink system so I can control the speed through Aqualink? I have also uploaded a photo of my pump motor just to make sure the two you mentioned are a direct replacement for it.

Hi Brian, Our suggestion would be to upgrade your motor to this Variable Speed Pool Motor and you will also need this Dyna Glas Seal Kit You will roughly 50%-70% on your operational costs by upgrading to variable speed.
