What is Service Factor?

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?

We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?

A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

I'm trying to replace the motor on my pool pump but all these numbers and abbreviations on the motor label are really confusing me. What do they mean?

Does the control on this 2 speed motor need to be wired during installation?

No, the control on the motor comes pre-wired from the manufacturer. You will simply need to wire the motor.

Impeller broke due to corrosion of the copper ring in the diffuser letting pressure off the shaft seal and ruin the motor.

1. Disconnect power at breaker to pump
2. Short power poles to verify correct breaker is off. Short start capacitor.
3. Unhook power wires from back of motor, remove bonding wire last
4. Removed mount plate from pump by loosening and remove metal clamp ring.
5. Remove diffuser from mount plate.
6. Remove broken impeller from motor shaft
7. Unbolt motor from mount plate
8. Bolt new motor to mount plate
9. Press shaft seal to motor shaft. Used a socket to press evenly on seal.
10. Install new impeller, hand-tight as to not over tighten. Torque from motor will tighten impeller further with use. Be sure enough pressure is placed on the shaft-seal to give a proper seal.
11. Install new diffuser.
12. Replaced diffuser o-ring. Lubricate diffuser with o-ring lube and install
13. Lube pump housing o-ring.
14. Install mount plate to pump housing. Ensure the UP label is up.
15. Tighten metal clamp ring very tight.
16. Attach motor to bonding wire, then attach electrical wiring
17. Close breaker power to pump, very no shorts by watching breaker for a second to make sure it stays closed.
18. Program timer on pump.
19. Check for leaks on o-rings and watch for water leaking through the motor that would be a sign the shaft-seal did not seal correctly.
20. Go swimming.
