I have a pool that is about 10,000 gallons but I am thinking of buying a salt chlorine system for pools up to 20,000 gallons. Would the larger unit be a problem?
Reply
It is not a problem to oversize a salt system. It would take the larger unit less time to produce the necessary chlorine so it is actually more efficient. When the pool volume is very close to the capacity of the salt chlorine generator (for example, the pool is 18,000 gallons and the generator is rated at a maximum of 20,000 gallons), we would recommend going up to the next size generator.

Is the salt included with the salt chlorine generator?
Reply
No, salt is not included. You would purchase the salt locally and the quantity will depend upon the number of gallons of water in your pool. Use a salt that is at least 99.8% pure NaCl. The preferred salt is evaporated, granulated, food quality, and NON-iodized. Avoid using salt with anti-caking agents like sodium ferrocyanide, also known as yellow YPS (prussiate of soda). These cause some discoloration of fittings and pool surface finishes. DO NOT use calcium chloride.

Is it better to oversize or undersize the Hayward Aquarite?
Reply
It is better to oversize the Aquarite for two reasons. First, the salt cell will last longer because it does not have to run as long to generate the proper amount of chlorine. This will also lengthen the life of the cell. Second, if you under size the salt system you may have to add chlorine in the warmer months when the chlorine demand is higher.

Had the pool water tested, checked all of the connections, including the power supply and circuit board of the existing chlorine generator (Aquarite 40k) for corrosion and cleaned the cell, recalibrated but the problem persisted and determined that the 11 year old system needed to be replaced. I photographed /documented the power connections and confirmed the pool gallons (15K) and ordered a new AQR15. I probably could have started part swapping until it was fixed but time is money.
Once my new system arrived it was a simple matter of turning of the house panel breaker that supplied the system and removing the old system and installing the new one. Added salt to the pool as determined by a pool water test, turned the power on and eureka, everything was working perfectly. I subsequently fired the pool guy.

(4 out of 5 stars) Poor install/user manual
Reviewed By: Rich B. from San Diego, CA ()
Pros: I'll let you know in a month how the unit really works
Cons: Poorly written manual. You have to guess for part of it
I just installed the unit and it appears to be working as advertised. However the User/install manual could use a little work. Specifically the part that addresses the "display window." There is NO defined explaination as to what the digits in the display window represent ? There should be an example in the manual that shows what each display is and what it should look like. I could only figure out 2 or 3 of the displays as they were "commom sense" displays...temperature and the setting for the t-15 cell, but even then the "t" did not look like a "T ." I suppose I can research what the other displays represent ? Pretty much a manual printed/translated from a third world country.

We were so excited to convert our pool to salt. Researched products and thought that this was the best choice. For the first year and a half- AMAZING. Then things went down hill fast. The salt cell failed, pool turned green. After 18 months- disappointed. Contacted Hayward. After a bit of run around they honored the warranty and sent a refurbished replacement with a 1 year warranty. It just failed and another green pool. Failed after a winter of light use less than 7 months. Again disappointed. They have lots of good reviews. Not sure what happened on my end- had the system professionally installed and maintained as instructed. I am super frustrated as a green pool is no fun.
