What is Service Factor?
Reply
Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
Reply
We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
Reply
A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

I'm trying to replace the motor on my pool pump but all these numbers and abbreviations on the motor label are really confusing me. What do they mean?

Replacing a pool pump motor is not as difficult as it seems. You can try looking here. If you need help figuring out what the information on your label means. If you are still having difficulty figuring it out you can call us at our toll free number or you can send us a photo of your motor label here.

I just finished replacing the shaft seal on my booster pump. As soon as I turned the pump on water was leaking from the shaft seal. Is it defective or am I doing something wrong?
Reply
Depending on the model, the installation of a booster pump shaft seal can be slightly different than a pool pump shaft seal. Some booster pump and pool pump shaft seals require that a silicone sealant be used on the outer areas of the metal seat of the shaft seal. The seal will need to be lightly hammered into the body of the pump. You can use a 1 inch PVC coupling or a piece of 1 1/4 inch PVC pipe and a rubber mallet. This procedure will apply to any pool pump or booster pump using a >PS-1000 style shaft seal.

I have a 1.5 hp whisperflo single speed pump. The motor is humming loudly and going out. Would using a 2hp motor increase the life of the motor or help with the water movement or does it spin faster thus causing a higher output? Thanks!
Reply
Aaron, Increasing the HP wouldn't necessarily increase the lifespan of the motor. Also keep in mind that the higher HP means higher amps (higher electric bill). Upgrading the HP would also mean needing to upgrade the impeller. You also want to check that your filter can handle the higher HP before making a decision.

I need to replace (not original motor) an AO Smith B2854 1.5hp motor. This motor only lasted 3-4 yrs. Is there a better replacement out there?
Reply
Hello Dennis - We would recommend a 2-speed motor. Running the motor on the low speed will extend the life of the motor. Model B2982T would be the correct replacement. This is a full rated 1HP motor but it has the same total HP of your motor (1.65).

I need to replace a pool/spa motor. I replaced another one two years ago and this one is identical. I need at least a 1.5 HP and the serial number was 22612CH0614638 and the model is B2848. I see one in your catalog online but the model # has changed to B2842. What is the difference?

Does this motor comply with the California Title 20 requirements?
Reply
Terry, California’s Title 20 legislation states that pumps > 1HP (total) must be 2-speed or variable speed, and must have a control to default to low-speed (i.e. timer). We do carry the 2 speed version B2983T.

Thanks for the response; would the VS model ECM16SQU also be compatible? (I'm not sure about SF x HP) and is there a recommendation for one or the other of these two?
Reply
Yes the Variable Speed Motor ECM16SQU is also be compatible. If your pocket book can support it we would suggest the variable speed motor as it will save you quite a bit on your operational costs. We recently wrote an article on Is a Dual Speed Pump or Variable Speed Pump Right For Me. This article should help out quite a bit on determining which route you would like to go.

The Century 1.0 HP Square Flange 56Y Dual Speed Full Rate Motor - B2982 is the suggested replacement to the Pentair Whisperflo Dual Speed Up Rate 1 1/2 HP Pump - WFDS-26 the total HP on the High of the replacement motor is 1.65HP and low setting is 0.21HP. This meets and exceeds the total HP rating of the current Whisperflo motor on the pump. Please see How To Understand True Pump Horsepower - Up Rated vs Full Rated for the details.

b2982 motor is a I horse/.13 dual speed correct? the motor I have is a 1.5 horse/.19 dual speed motor. I see there is a 1/2 hp difference here. if I did not want the lower hp dual speed motor and want to go to a single speed would the b2842 be the replacement. Would it bolt up to the pump housing? the motor pictured has been repaired due to burnt out capacitor and only functions as a single speed any way. Stewart

This motor is no longer a whisper and more like a jet engine. I wanted to make sure that this is the right replacement.
Hi, Joanie. Yes, this B2842 is the correct replacement. You will also need the Whisperflo Tune Up Kit - GOKIT32 or GOKIT32SALT.

We offer How To Replace the Motor on Your Pool Pump The Whisperflo uses the PSR-1000 pump seals that require a thin layer of RTV Sealant between the metal backing of the pump shaft seal and Seal Plate You may use another guide generic to the Whisperflo pump that shows how to replace this style seal http://www.inyopools.com/HowToPage/how_to_change_the_shaft_seal_on_a_polaris_pb4_60_booster_pump.aspx and other How To Guides http://www.inyopools.com/how_to_guides.aspx

Hi Hardy, This is NOT the correct replacement motor for the pump you referenced. You will require this SQ1152 1.5 HP Replacement Motor Based on your pump information you will also need this Sta-Rite Max E Pro Seal Kit. Please note that for Sta-Rite Max-E-Pro models February 2015-Current you will also have to purchase the Seal Plate Gasket - 357099Z if your pump is from before Feb. 2015 then this is not needed. We put together this Video on How to Replace a Pool Pump Motor which you may find helpful when you tackle this project.

The labels on my Pentaire Pump 1.5HP WhisperFlow has faded and cannot tell the part number. Is the B2842 compatible with my system? I would like to look at other options better then the existing one. I want some energy efficient type but yet not too expensive. My motor is running very low now. I think it is about to die soon. Please tell me what other options that may work better than what I have now. Also, would it hurt for me to go to a 2.0 HP instead? See attached photos.
Hi Mak, The B842 motor on this page is an exact match replacement to the motor in your photo. The most energy-efficient motor will be this 2.7 HP Variable Speed Replacement Motor. Here is an article we wrote on the Energy Savings of a Single Speed Pool Pump Vs. a Variable Speed Pool Pump. If you wanted to take advantage of the higher speeds of the Variable Speed motor then I would suggest upgrading to a 2-1/2 HP Whisperflo Impeller. With either motor you will require this Whisperflo Seal Kit

Hi Suzi, yes this is the correct single speed replacement motor for your motor included in the photo. When replacing a pool motor we do suggest a Seal Kit. Could you send us a few photos of your pump so we can suggest the proper seal kit? If so then please take a wide shot of the complete pump to include the pipes going in and out of the pump. To supply photos simply click the reply link below and upload your photos. Once we get those photos we can make the proper recommendation for your seal kit.

I am looking to replace my original motor on a Whisperflow Pump, model 7-177451-03 and the B2842 is what comes back, but is only a 1.5 HP motor, whereas the original is a 2 HP. What would the correct 2 HP version be. Also, to confirm, wiring pattern would remain the same. L1 from old motor = L1 from new motor.
Hi Brian, this is the correct replacement motor for motor part number 177451. You will also need a Pentair Whisperflo seal kit when you replace your motor. We put together this Video on How to Replace a Pool Pump Motor which you may find helpful when you tackle this project. Also, for 230 voltage each hot lead will go to L1 and L2. I need to replace my pentair whisperflo WFE-6 motor. I assume I can replace it with a B2842. I would like to replace with either a B2843 or B2844. Would that be a problem?

Reply
Hello James. The Century Motor model B2842 closely resembles the Whisperflo WFE-6 original motor specification. The Century Motors model B2843 has a slightly higher total horsepower (THP) rating but is not as energy efficient as the B2842- still a compatible replacement. The Century Motors model B2844 has a THP of 3.45 and an even greater energy draw. Technically, the B2844 is a compatible replacement but what is the goal of such a large increase in THP? It is recommended that the shaft seal and gaskets be replaced concurrent with the new motor. The GOKIT32 contains the necessary parts. Tune Up Kit Pentair/Purex Whisperflo - GOKIT32

Will this pump replace the motor below on a jandy, what is shaft diameter
Hi Steven, the B2842 motor will be a perfect replacement for your old 0-193994-06 motor. The motor shaft diameter is 5/8" but the shaft seal is specific to the pump and not the motor. Let us know what the model of the pump is that the motor attaches to so we can help you choose a new motor shaft seal or Tune-Up Kit to ensure a leak-free installation.
