What is Service Factor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/11/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

Replacing a pool pump motor is not as difficult as it seems. You can try looking here. If you need help figuring out what the information on your label means. If you are still having difficulty figuring it out you can call us at our toll free number or you can send us a photo of your motor label here.

I just finished replacing the shaft seal on my booster pump. As soon as I turned the pump on water was leaking from the shaft seal. Is it defective or am I doing something wrong?
 Reply

A  Answered on 2/16/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Depending on the model, the installation of a booster pump shaft seal can be slightly different than a pool pump shaft seal. Some booster pump and pool pump shaft seals require that a silicone sealant be used on the outer areas of the metal seat of the shaft seal. The seal will need to be lightly hammered into the body of the pump. You can use a 1 inch PVC coupling or a piece of 1 1/4 inch PVC pipe and a rubber mallet. This procedure will apply to any pool pump or booster pump using a >PS-1000 style shaft seal.

I have a 1.5 hp whisperflo single speed pump. The motor is humming loudly and going out. Would using a 2hp motor increase the life of the motor or help with the water movement or does it spin faster thus causing a higher output? Thanks!
 Reply

A  Answered on 12/22/2014 by InyoPools Product Specialist Alex V.

Aaron, Increasing the HP wouldn't necessarily increase the lifespan of the motor. Also keep in mind that the higher HP means higher amps (higher electric bill). Upgrading the HP would also mean needing to upgrade the impeller.  You also want to check that your filter can handle the higher HP before making a decision.

 Reply

A  Answered on 4/3/2015 by InyoPools Product Specialist Robert M.

Hello Dennis - We would recommend a 2-speed motor. Running the motor on the low speed will extend the life of the motor. Model B2982T would be the correct replacement. This is a full rated 1HP motor but it has the same total HP of your motor (1.65).

Terry, California’s Title 20 legislation states that pumps > 1HP (total) must be 2-speed or variable speed, and must have a control to default to low-speed (i.e. timer). We do carry the  2 speed version B2983T.

Yes the Variable Speed Motor ECM16SQU is also be compatible. If your pocket book can support it we would suggest the variable speed motor as it will save you quite a bit on your operational costs. We recently wrote an article on Is a Dual Speed Pump or Variable Speed Pump Right For Me. This article should help out quite a bit on determining which route you would like to go.

Would this pump be a good replacement for a Pentair 011774? Also with this being an energy efficient model how much of a savings over the 011774 could I see? Last question would if be more economical (energy usage) to go with this motor, or a full-rated 2HP model?

Yes, this is the correct single speed replacement motor and for cross-referencing the correct seals needed please click here to view the parts diagram for the pump. Most commonly keys 5, 13 and 15 are replaced. You will need the serial number of the pump to confirm which shaft seal that you will need.

I recently submitted a question and have an additional question. My pool pump is the Jandy Stealth SHPF1.5 (pic attached). The motor on it is an A.o. Smith. The replacement for the motor is the B2842 but based on my pool pump it says the replacement motor for that pump is B2854. Not sure if the motor that is on my pump now is correct. The biggest difference I see is the total horse power. Which replacement motor should I buy?

I have older model Pentair Intelliflo VSP (pre-2011). The drive is apparently going out - won't maintain correct pressure regardless of setting. The drive is no longer available for this older model. I was told that I could replace existing pump motor with this one, thus avoiding cost of new drive. Given the age of the pump, the motor likely does not have much life left either. I have ~24K pool. Will this pump motor work?

Hi Kevin, Could you let us know which state you are in? If you live in California you now have to go with a VSP. Also could you give us the information off of the motor for your current pump like HP, Amps, Volts, SF, Frame, Model #, etc..To supply this information click the reply link below, also if you could send a few photos those are always helpful as well. If you send photos then take a close up shot of the motor label as well as a wide shot of the complete pump to include the pipes going in and out of the pump. To supply photos simply click the reply link below and upload your photos. Once we get any of this information we can make the proper recommendation.

Here is an article we wrote on the Energy Savings of a Single Speed Pool Pump Vs. a Variable Speed Pool Pump. In order to locate the correct ones, we will just need the front pump wet end housing model name or number that the motor is attached to. You can also upload photos in a reply to this if you need to.

Hi Alexandra, yes this is the correct single speed replacement motor for your motor part number 177451 included in the photo. When replacing a pool motor we do suggest a Seal Kit. Could you send us a few photos of your pump so we can suggest the proper seal kit? If so then please take a wide shot of the complete pump to include the pipes going in and out of the pump. To supply photos simply click the reply link below and upload your photos. Once we get those photos we can make the proper recommendation for your seal kit.

I currently have one of these units (Centurion B 2842) in operation and am experiencing a buzzing or loud humming noise coming from the pump housing. To me it sounds like a bad bearing noise. I've ordered a new replacement pump but would like to repair the old unit for an emergency spare. Are there bearings inside the pump housing that can be replaced? If so, do you sell them? Thanks.

Thank you for contacting Inyo Pools, On the back of the motor on the very end of the rigid plastic cap is a metal cap that comes off. Your going to need a very thin flat head screw driver.

I need to replace my pentair whisperflo WFE-6 motor. I assume I can replace it with a B2842. I would like to replace with either a B2843 or B2844. Would that be a problem? Jim
 Reply

A  Answered on 10/12/2021 by InyoPools Product Specialist Craig C.

Hello James.  The Century Motor model B2842 closely resembles the Whisperflo WFE-6 original motor specification.  The Century Motors model B2843 has a slightly higher total horsepower (THP) rating but is not as energy efficient as the B2842- still a compatible replacement.  The Century Motors model B2844 has a THP of 3.45 and an even greater energy draw.  Technically, the B2844 is a compatible replacement but what is the goal of such a large increase in THP?   It is recommended that the shaft seal and gaskets be replaced concurrent with the new motor.  The GOKIT32 contains the necessary parts.   Tune Up Kit Pentair/Purex Whisperflo - GOKIT32

 Reply

A  Answered on 1/17/2022 by InyoPools Product Specialist Megan C.

Hi Steven, the B2842 motor will be a perfect replacement for your old 0-193994-06 motor.  The motor shaft diameter is 5/8" but the shaft seal is specific to the pump and not the motor. Let us know what the model of the pump is that the motor attaches to so we can help you choose a new motor shaft seal or Tune-Up Kit to ensure a leak-free installation.
