If I have a large pool pump will I need to have a flow meter for the heat pump?
Reply
According to Hayward their heat pumps have a flow rate range of 30 to 70 GPM, with an optimum flow rate of 45 GPM. If your pump is capable of significantly more flow than this, a flow meter is recommended to insure the flow rate is within the prescribed range.

Can a heat pump be installed indoors?
Reply
Generally no. Heat Pumps work by transferring heat from the surrounding air to the pool water. If a heat pump is installed indoors there must be a continuous supply of warm air from which the heat pump can extract heat. If you must heat the air in the room before the heat pump can extract that heat to heat the pool, there would be no benefit to the heat pump.
Reply
Can a heat pump be installed under a deck?
Reply
No. Any installation that causes the air being discharged from the top of the heat pump to be recirculated back into the heat pump will cause a loss of capacity and efficiency in the heat pump. Installation of a heat pump under a deck, or a low over hang will allow the air being discharged to be drawn back in by the heat pump.

The photo of the pool pump located at the top of the page is different than the photo in the Description tab below it. Which is the correct photo? Do you have the exact dimensions for this heater (length, width, height)?
Reply
The HP50TA is listed as a square heat pump. The dimensions are as follows: Width x Depth: 30¼" x 34"Height: 29".
Reply
When this heater is installed, is there a required distance it needs to away from the pool?
Reply
A minimum clearance of 72 inches should be allowed above the unit for unrestricted air discharge. The unit must not be installed under a porch. Any side of the unit should be located at least 24 inches from a wall or from any other obstruction for unrestricted air intake and service access.
Reply
Do the heat pumps have to be filled with any type of refrigerant before use?
Reply
Hello, you will not need to fill the heat pump with any refrigerant before use. You will simply need to plumb the unit in and connect the electric.
Reply
Is this heat pump compatible with salt water pool? Are there any service providers in the Philadelphia area for warranty work?

i have a 30 ft x 15 ft. above ground pool. what size heat pump would be effective for my pool.? the pool is 56 inches deep.
Reply
We just purchased the Hayward HP50TA Heat Pump, along with a 1/2 lb. check valve, as we use an in-line chlorine distributor. In reading the literature that came with the heater, it specifies a 1/3 lb. check valve.
Is it going to be a problem if I use the 1/2 lb., or do I need to exchange it for the 1/3 lb.?
Reply
Joe, Using the 1/2lb check valve should not be an issue as long as your pump can generate the proper GPM to open that check valve.

Does your pool filter have to be ON, at the time your heater is working?
Reply
Yes, your pump has to be circulation the water through the Heat Pump in order for the Heat Pump to be able to Heat the pool.
Reply
would this heater heat a 24 round above ground pool thanks
Reply
Hi Mark, Since you are in a warmer climate like Georgia then this heat pump would be good for a 24' round pool. If you were up in the northeast I would suggest going up to a larger unit like the Hayward 95,000 BTU Heat Pump.
Reply
Is it okay to have a timer on your pool filter/pump, and have the heater on with the flo message shown or does that mess with the heater?
Reply
No this can cause damanged to the heater. Possible causes: - The filter is in backwash position. - The filter pump is stopped. - The fi lter is dirty. - Shortage of water to pool pump. - Water pressure switch must be adjusted or it is broken
Reply
is recommended to use pvc piping when installing plumbing or can a thick hose be used
Reply
Hi Kelly, PVC piping would be recommended over flex hose, the hose gets to soft when applied directly after the heater.

I live on long island. Is this heat pump good enough for a 12'x24'?
Reply
Daryll - Depends on how long a season you want. If you want to extend into April and Octorber, you will need a larger heat pump like Raypak's 3350ti [68K BTUs] or their 4350ti [85K BTUs]. The Hayward 50K BTU heat pump would only maintain heat through part of May and September.
Reply
Would this product be good for just heating an in ground spa? Not really interested in heating the inground pool. Current Jandy went "toes up".
Reply
You can use the Hayward Heat Pro Heat Pump 50k BTU Digital Display Above Ground Pool on an in ground spa. Depending on the outside temperature and the water temperature you will have to turn on the heater a few hours before you want to use the spa versus a gas heater.

I have a 21 Ft round above ground pool, I live about 50 Miles north of NYC, would this Hayward 50K Heat Pro suffice?
Reply
Other than the orientation of the unit, what is the difference between this one and the HP50HA? I see they both are 50k BTU, but does one have more or different features than the other?
Reply
Hi,Other than the orientation on the unit the HP50HA model has a cooling mode to lower pool temperature and has 1-1/2" port for plumbing connections and the HP50TA does not have a cooling mode but has 2" port for plumbing connections. Other than the orientation on the unit
Reply
We have an above ground pool. It is a round 18'X54" deep. We live in central Iowa. I am wondering if this heat pump would be big enough to warm our water up to 85 degrees in early June and again for the month of September?
Reply
Any size heat will get the water to a desired temp. It just matters what the ambient temperature is, the humidity and what kind of heat retention you have in place. The higher the BTU's , the faster it gets to where you want. The warmer and more humid , the better these work. Also, a solar blanket, either a rolled out blanket or liquid blanket would fight the evaporation which is where your heat loss would occur.
Reply
Would this heater work on a 15x30 above ground pool or do we need higher btu's? Thanks for your feedback.

Hi, This unit can be used to heat a 15'x30' above ground pool, however you can choose a unit with a higher BTU which will heat the pool faster.

I see that your model HP50HA must be installed above the level of the pool water.
Does this unit have the same requirement?
I have a 15 Ft Dia above ground pool (5,280 gallons) in Allentown PA. The pump and filter are at the same level as the bottom of the pool. I need to decide between the two units, please advise

I usually take my filter and pump inside for the winter, would it damage the heat pump to leave it outside during the winter?
If not, should I drain the water?
Is there a cover for the Heat Pump?

Hi Sam, Yes, you can leave the heat pump outside during the winter, you will have to winterize it which will require draining the water out of the unit. You can also use a Pool Heat Pump Cover.

Hi, I am getting a 9K Gal fiberglass in-ground pool that includes a small built in spa with spill over. My two options for Heat pumps are this model and the bigger HP21404T. I want to know if for this size pool and my area is it worth spending the extra money to get the bigger pump or will this one do fine? Also can this heat pump be set up to work the spa independently of the pool? Meaning can I have the spa at 100 deg and the pool at 85 with this one pump? I will have an aqua plus T9 salt too

I would not recommend one smaller than the 95,000 BTU model, HP21004T.

I keep getting the flo error... it's new filter and plenty of water flowing... could the pump possibly just not be powerful enough for the amount of water flow that's needed. It's an intex 12x24 above ground..
Reply
Hello, depending on what type of pump you have would really show if you have enough flow on it. How old is your unit? It would also depend on your feet of head on getting enough flow in your heat pump.
Reply
using no. 8 wire does it take two hots and a ground or 2 hots and neutral from the panel box.

Hi, Little. This unit requires two hot and a ground. The electrical has to be done by a licensed electrician in order to maintain the manufacturer warranty.

Hi, I see in some configurations that there are Check Valves installed. Are they required? If so, what is the purpose. Thank you
Reply
Hi Vincent, If you have an pool chlorinator then we suggest a check valve, as when your pump turns off that highly concentrated chlorine from the chlorinator has a tendancy to back flow and sit on the Heat Pumps heat exchanger. The check valve prevents this from occuring and prolongs the heat exchanger.

I have a 1 hp Hayward power flo matrix pump. Will that be enough flow or too much? The HP50TA Heat pump will be located about 2-3 feet away from the pump. Thank you
Reply
Hi, Vincent. The 1 HP Matrix pump will provide adequate water flow to operate the HP50TA unit.
Reply
how does the HP50TA operates do you set the desired temperature and display units lets say 32 degrees Celcius and then run it on a timer that connects and disconnects the power from the heat Pump? are the settings stored when you disconnect the power? are settings stored indefinitely or for a specific period of time?
Reply
Hi Joan, you would set the temperature on the thermostat of the heat pump and if water is running through the heat pump and the water temperature is below the set point on the thermostat then the heater will kick on.
Reply
Can I connect this unit to an industrial grade torx 220 volt timer that my pump is connected to so they come on at the same time? I have the timer on a 60 amp ground fault spa panel.
Reply
This heat pump has a flow switch so there is no extra timer needed. It works as follows... you set the temperature on the heat pump and then if water is flowing through the heat pump and the water temp. is below the thermostat set point then the heater will kick on. If your pool pump timer does not have your pool pump running then the heat pump will not kick on since water is not running through it.

Reply
Depends on your geography, but you should go with the larger unit. I'm in the NorthEast with an 18ft (8500gal.) round in partial sun and the 50k unit keeps my pool heated well when temps are above 80, but takes awhile to heat a few degrees when its less than that.

Christine, LOC means that the lockout function has been enabled. A lock out function is provided to keep the temperature set point from being changed. To engage this function in the pool or spa mode press the up arrow button, down arrow button and pool button at the same time and hold for 2 seconds. The control display will read “LOC” while the lock out function is engaged. To exit the lock out function in pool or spa mode press the up arrow button, down arrow button and pool button at the same time.

Hi, Mike. This HP50TA can be used, however, if you would like to keep the pool at a temperature in the high 80's the unit will be running a bit costing more to operate. So you either pay more upfront less to operate or less upfront and more to operate. I would recommend like a 70K-100K BTU unit.
