Warranty SEE OWNER'S MANUAL
Hayward’s HP50HA, a new 45,000 BTU horizontal fan heat pump that can more efficiently heat in- or above-ground pools up to 13,000 gallons.
Hayward wanted to introduce an economical heat pump, right-sized for smaller in-ground and above-ground pools. The technological advances of Hayward’s new heat pump will help to provide pool owners with the ideal water temperature in an energy-efficient manner.
Features include:
Pools equipped with the HP50HA are designed to economically extend the swimming season. It will literally allow pool owners the opportunity to swim longer into the evening hours, earlier in the spring and later in the fall. Pool owners with smaller pools now have an efficient heating solution right-sized for their applications.
Applications
Can you connect your pool pump electrical and Pool Pilot salt water controller directly to the HP50HA system so that all systems run on the HP50HA timer. The pump is 1 1/2 HP.
Reply
No, the timer on the HP50HA does not control a pool pump and salt water chlorinator.

What does is cost to run this unit? Does it have an efficiency rating?
Reply
The cost to run the unit is dependant on the price you pay per kilowatt hour. It is similar to the price to run an air conditioner during the summer. The efficiency rating can be found on this brochure

Would this unit be compatible with a solar electric powered home?
Reply
Hello Dave - This unit will require a 20 amp breaker and 230 voltage. If your system can provide that, the heat pump will work.

(5 out of 5 stars) Hayward Heat Pump
Reviewed By: Jack M. from Blairsville Ga. ()
Pros: Easy installation, plumbing connections were very simple.
I am very pleased with everything. Inyo price matched the heater. I placed the ordered on April 9th and received it on the 18th. Installed on a 20 amp breaker as advised by Hayward and works great. Water temp was 63 degrees to start and is at 79 now. This is quite surprising because our lows at night are in the 40s and daytime highs in the mid 70s. I did place a solar blanket on the pool to retain the heat at night. We also have had a lot of rain which tends to cool the water. 79 is warm enough for me so I'm a happy camper. I usually don't open the pool until the end of May but this year I was swimming on April 24th. We have 24’ round above ground and are located in the North Ga. Mountains.

I bought this unit on March 23, 2016, and it went into service late April the same year. Pool is a 7000 gal. salt water inground in NW Florida. Pump set to run eight hours per day in winter and 10 hours per day in summer. I recommend using a thermal cover with this unit. It raises my pool temp about 1/2 degree per hour. I run it 24 hr. per day until it reaches the set temp and then set the pump timer and cover the pool each evening before pump shuts off. I purchased this unit primarily for its cooling feature, because in the summer my pool could at times reach the low to mid 90s. I do not cover the pool in the summer. It did a nice job until it quit a few months after installation. It ran but did not cool. I noticed the compressor was not coming on and it made a clicking sound much like my home heat pump did when the capacitor failed. I contacted Hayward, and they told me to just contact an authorized repair center from their website list and I was covered under warranty. The only authorized repair center was a HVAC company in the next county. After a phone call, they sent two repairmen out. By their facial expressions you would have thought they were looking at an alien. I guess they had never seen a pool heat pump in their careers. I explained what the unit was doing and they proceeded to diagnose the problem all the while telling me it was probably the compressor. After a quick check, they high fived each other and proclaimed it was a failed compressor. I informed them it was a new unit and asked if they would please test the capacitor which they did and discovered it was at fault and not the compressor. I had them contact Hayward for payment and things went south. Hayward wanted to know why I did not wait to receive a factory authorized repair order because a customer can not just order their own warranty repairs. After telling them I was following their service tech's instructions they wanted to know who I spoke to. I informed them I wasn't taking names and they should ask around the room. I told the HVAC men I would pay the bill if Hayward wouldn't and they should just go on. In the end it did get sorted out and was covered under the warranty. The unit stayed off from Nov. thru Feb. I turned on the heat mode in early March. By Early April, the control panel would not let me change the temp. It worked but I just couldn't make any adjustments. Lifting the cover you could see the panel separating from its mount. Being two weeks past its one year anniversary, it is now into the free parts no labor warranty period. Contacted Hayward again and received the same verbal instructions so I contacted them through the website to have a document trail. Once again I don't belive there is really anyone locally familiar with the unit, and I picture paying for multiple service trips. I reinspected the unit today and it worked as designed. I believe the problem was water infiltration behind the control panel. I hot glued around it and the mount and fabricated a rain deflector to protect it. Since it is working fine, and I am under parts warranty until next March, I will wait and see if anything else fails before I pay for a service call. For my pool the unit heats and cools fine. In the summer it will sometimes run all day to keep it at 86 degrees so I question if it would keep up with a larger capacity pool. It appears to very efficient and just guessing it adds less than $100 to the monthly electric bill. I really haven't tried to measure it too closely since having cool water in the summer is worth it.

(5 out of 5 stars) Excelent above ground pool heater
Reviewed By: Douglas W. from eastern North Carolina ()
Purchased this at end of last summer for 21' above ground pool. Raised water temp several degrees over approximately 24 hr period after initial installation. Unit size, design, and reasonable weight allowed for mounting unit elevated (no grass clippings etc) on shed wall that also houses pool pump using 4x4's bolted through to wall. Only glitch we had was keypad controls needed held down for a few seconds for unit to start, this wasn't detailed in owners manual, so it took us some extra time to complete start up.
