What is Service Factor?

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?

We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?

A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

Can you direct me to the proper hi low switch for this motor?

Unfortunately the manufacturer does not offer the switch for the 2 speed 220v motors any longer. If you already have a 220 volt timer (on/off) you would need an Intermatic T106R to switch from high to low speed. If you do not have a timer currently you would need the T10604R which is a 220v on/off timer and a high/low timer.

I have Jandy PHPM 1.0 pump with single speed motor. Would this be the correct replacement motor to upgrade to dual speed?

Hi Jeff, The 2-Green 3/4 HP Full Rate Square Flange 230V Motor w/ Digital Controller (B2980T) or the (B2981T) which would be the 115 volt version would be the correct dual speed motor for your model pump. It has a built-in controller and timer so you do not have to purchase and install an additional timer that is needed to operate a dual speed motor.

Hi, Lawrence. Yes, this motor can be wired for high speed only. You would wire power to the motor using the Com, High, and Ground terminals.

It is my understanding that the high speed needs to be used when vacuuming the pool. When the pool is super chlorinated which speed should be used: low speed, high speed or does it matter?

Hi, Jim. It does not matter. If on low speed the pump can activate the flow switch then running the pump on low speed will be more efficient than high speed.

I have a StaRite P6e6e with a single speed motor, connected to a Jandy iAqualink. Can I replace the old motor with this dual speed and control it from the same iaqualink board? Anything else in the pump besides the seals, that needs to be replaced, such as the impeller?

Hi Alex, You can replace this dual speed motor with your single speed motor, however to control this with your AquaLink you will need to purchase the Jandy AquaLink Dual Speed Pump Relay and you will need to make sure you have one open spot on your AquaLink for an additional relay.

Hi, Joe. You cannot calculate the flow rate using the motor info only, it's done by using the pump's info and the TDH of the body of water.

I have a Jandy model FHPM 1.0-2 pump, 230v 2 speed. Motor says, mini switch reliability plus hi-speed switchless design.
Is this motor a direct replacement?

That is close but the Motor, Sq Fl E-plus,full,2 Speed 230v 3/4 Hp (b2980) is the suggested replacement. The total HP of this motor is 1.25. If you are using the Bracket With Black Toggle Switch (17590450) they are sold separately, you may use your old one if it is still good. The original Jandy FloPro 1 HP Dual Speed Pump - FHPM102 did not include it either.

So this motor is a dual speed energy efficient motor. The model 5222AX is a single speed energy efficient model and the ECM16CU is the variable speed energy efficient model as well. All are replacement energy efficient options that would replace yours.

We have a Jandy PHPM1.5-2 pool pump, with a Century 2-Speed motor (Part #7-193989). The pump was manufactured in November 2012. The B2982 appears to be the correct replacement motor. Two questions: 1) both motors have the same Total Motor HP of 1.65 and high/low speed RPMs, yet the replacement motor is a 1HP vs our current 1.5HP. Replacement just more efficient? 2) Amps SF on current motor are 7.2/3.0, but 7.4/1.4 on the B2982. OK?

Hello, thank you for contacting Inyo Pools. The B2982 is the correct replacement for you. This motor is a full rate motor, what you have now is an uprated motor. For more on this difference, please click here. With the amps, that difference is fine, and you will see no difference.

I need to replace an A.O.Smith 1.5 HP mod #193986-24 Rated at 8.0 sf amps, (on a Flo Pro pump). I want to go to a more economical motor but I need the amount of flow this provides, (2 skimmers and pool sweep). What do you suggest, and how to find out the expected flow rate for comparison?

Hi, Do. In order to get the flow info, you will need to calculate the Total Dynamic Head (TDH) of your pool and use the FloPro Performance Curve.

Hi there,
I have a jandy Flopro variable speed pump 1.5-2hp. The pump works on the low speed but when it kicks into high speed it hums for a couple of seconds and then turns off all together. And there is a slight burnt smell to it. I've been running the pool pump only on the low speed for about a week now but I can't do that forever. I've included 2 pictures of the motor itself. Do you guys think I need a new motor, and is this the correct replacement?

Hi, JP. It sounds like it could be a bad capacitor. You can test your capacitor using our How to Test a Pool Pump Capacitor. If the capacitor is good, then you will need to replace the motor.

Hello guys,
I'm trying to find the right capacitors for this pool pump motor. I don't know if it has a run capacitor, a start capacitor, or both...but my pool pump is humming and shutting off, so to start I'm going to replace the capacitors. I currently have a pool motor with the part number: 177475, but when I look up that part number on InyoPools.com, it says it is not California Title 20 compliant and I am in California. Is this motor (B2982) ok to replace that one with?

Hi TW, this motor is not California compliant. You will require this 1.65 HP Variable Speed Motor as California no longer allows single speed motors. This new variable speed motor will save you a ton on your operational costs.

Hi TW, I'm sorry you are correct the B2982 is Title 20 compliant I miss-read the product name as a single speed pump when in fact it is a dual speed pump. So you can go with either this dual speed pump or the variable speed pump I suggested. A few items of note on the dual speed pump... it is not as energy efficient as a variable speed pump. Also if you are currently controlling your pump with a standard yellow dial timer then a separate Dual Speed Timer will need to be purchased to control the dual speed motor where on the variable speed motor a separate timer is not required as the controller is mounted to the top of the motor. Finally, from an installation standpoint, the variable speed is an easier install than the dual speed. I hope this helps.

Hi I have to replace a motor that's humming on high; on low works. Probably the internal switch may be damaged? Attached it's the model number 193989-05. Is this the correct replacement?

No, unfortunately, this only works on 230V. Could you send us a few photos of your pump and motor? Hi, my pool motor starts making very loud noise when running and consider its age, I’m looking for a replacement to it. Attached is the picture of it. Do you think this is the correct replacement. Also I’m a new homeowner and the pool is about 12000 gallons, do you think that I need a lower hp pump it this should work just fine?

Hi Owen, so most often we recommend staying with the same model motor that is there however here is a guide that we put together called "How to Select an Inground Pool Pump" that may assist in considering another HP pump. Also, the B2982 is the correct direct replacement motor and on this Pentair Whisperfo parts diagram, both version seal kits that you can use are listed there.

Replacing Century O-193989-05 motor. I believe B2982 is correct motor equivalent, but wanted to confirm. Also need tune up kit but don’t see a kit for my pump (Jandy FloPro FHPM 1.5). Do I need to buy individually? If so are part #s 5020-041 (diffuser/backplate) and 5250-250 (pump seal) all I need? It is a salt water system. Thanks!

I replaced the single speed motor on my Sta-Rite Dura-Glas P2RA5E-118L pump with a Century B2982 1HP, 1.65SF, Two Speed Motor and re-used the Pentair C105-138PEB impeller and the Pentair C1-200PA diffuser from the single speed motor.
Would a Pentair C105-137PDBA impeller for 1-1/2 HP be a better choice?
I filter the pool water using the low speed and pump water through my 7 solar roof panels using high speed.

Hi Jeffrey, the Impeller - C105-138PEB is perfect for the Century 1.0 HP Square Flange 56Y Dual Speed Full Rate Motor - B2982 since it is rated for a 1 HP Uprated motor. There is no benefit to changing it, and putting the Impeller, 1.5/2.0 HP - C105-137PDBA on it would overtax the motor and probably cause it to fail prematurely.

I need a replacement 2 speed motor (O-193989-05) for a Jandy Flo Pro FHPM 1.5-2 pump and I see that the recommended replacement is the B2982, but this motor is a 1HP and my pump is a 1.5HP so wouldn't the replacement motor be the B2983? I also need the shaft seal kit. Do you have these motors in stock for immediate shipping?
Hi Willie, the B2982 motor is the most appropriate replacement for your old 0-193989-05 motor. It actually has a total horsepower of 1.65 (see our article on Is a 1.0HP Motor the Same as a 1.5HP Motor? to see how it is calculated). The B2983 would work, but it will use more electricity and not give you any added benefits. We do not have a Tune-Up Kit for this pump, but we still recommend changing the motor shaft seal and the diffuser & impeller hardware.

Hi Tom, yes this is the correct replacement motor for your motor part number 193508. If this is the original motor that came with the complete pool pump then the standard chlorine pool seal kit is the GOKIT32 and for a saltwater swimming pool it is the GOKIT32SALT.
