can you help me locate shaft seal for my pump

I can help you with this, I just need the model of your pump. If you don't have any of that information, you can attach a picture of your pump to this email and I can identify it that way.

Which way does the steel washer end fit into the pump?

Chester, The "spring loaded" portion in the photo is facing upwards. When it is installed on the impeller, the part that looks like a steel washer, would be facing the impeller. For further reference, please refer to our How To Replace a Pool Motor Shaft Seal Guide.

I disconnected the pump from power. I removed all the bolts from the motor to the housing. The two halves in the videos I've seen were to pull apart. Granted, my pump was not in the videos but I did what I thought would work. At first, I could not pull apart the two parts and had to give it some elbow grease. I gave too much elbow grease and pulled them apart. unbeknownst to me the two parts inside were connected by pins and when I pried both apart it broke the pins from the housing. So much for DYI, I had to purchase a new pump.
