What is Service Factor?
Reply
Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
Reply
We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
Reply
A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

I'm trying to find a replacement motor for my pool pump but my model number doesn't match what you have listed as the model number. My model number begins with a C48 and yours begins with an SP. Please help.
Reply
What we have listed on our chart pages is the pump model number. The model number you have will just identify the motor. If you look on the plastic housing on the pump there should be a sticker which will have the pump model number. You can usually find this by the discharge port on the pump. Once you locate it you can choose the correct replacement motor. Be certain to change the shaft seal and gaskets as needed. You can use our >How to guide if you need help.

I'm trying to replace the motor on my pool pump but all these numbers and abbreviations on the motor label are really confusing me. What do they mean?

Replacing a pool pump motor is not as difficult as it seems. You can try looking here. If you need help figuring out what the information on your label means. If you are still having difficulty figuring it out you can call us at our toll free number or you can send us a photo of your motor label here.

I need to replace an AO Smith B809 motor. All of the specs look identical to this one (Y56J, 230V, 2hp, etc). Can this replace my motor? My current one is 11.5" long without the shaft. Is this the same quality? Thanks!
Reply
John,I would not suggest using the 5213x. That is an uprated motor. The B809 is a Fullrate motor, the difference would be 5213x has a total hp of 2.0 whereas the B809 is 2.4hp. The lengths would be similar as well. I would also recommend getting a shaft seal or tune up kit. But you would need to get the model of the pump, not te motor to determine that.

Hi Mark, It is recommended that the shaft seal along with the pump seal be replaced when replacing the motor. If you can provided us the manufacturer and model of the pump housing we can get you the correct seals.

Good afternoon David, It depends on the service factor of your motor(s.f.). If it says 1.35 you need a Full-rated SN1202. If it says 1.2 it is UP Rated USN1202. If it is just 1 then yes, that's the one you should getMotor 56j Thrd Up 2 Hp (b230se)

I am replacing a CAT# B230SE, PART#184983 with similar and have a couple of questions:
1. which shaft seal kit would you recommend, maybe you guys could offer this as optional for each pump when ordering?
2. are there other pumps which can be used to replace that pump, full rated for example?
Reply
Hello- There are two options when it comes to your replacement. Obviously, there is the Motor 56j Thrd Up 2 Hp (b230se), or you can use Motor 56j Thrd Full 1.5 Hp (b129). As far as the shaft seal, motors are a generic replacement item. As far as the seal kits, motors can fit many different pumps, and the seals are specific to those pumps, not the motor. To find the correct seals you would need to know the model of your pump.

i currently have a ao smith motor that is almost exactly, specs wise, as the b230se you have in stock but mine has a part number of 7-184983-23 and is 56y instead of 56j. is there a different or can i use your b230se 56j to replace my 56y motor? i'm using hayward superflo pumps, i believe. thanks for your help.
Reply
If you have a Pentair SuperFlo you need the 56Y or 48Y frame, the 56J frame will not fit. If you want to attach a picture of your motor label and your complete SuperFlo pump just so I can confirm it is a SuperFlo so we can get the correct shaft seal and motor label so I can get you the correct replacement motor.

I have a Hayward Super II pump with a 2 hp motor. All of the markings are worn off. I believe it is a model SP3020EEAZ. It was installed in 2004. This is the second motor. The motor is starting to make noises (like a bearing is going). I was looking at your "A.O. Smith 2 H.P Pool Motor Energy... (B230SE) - 5213X" . Will this motor fit my pump? What other parts should I replace while I have it apart? Do you have instructions on how to replace a motor? Are any special tools needed?

Hi, Steve. The B230SE replacement motor will not work with model # SP3020EEAZ. Your replacement options are p/n ST1202 and B130 along with the Hayward Super II Pump Tune Up Kit - GOKIT2 or GOKIT2SALT. You can use our How To Replace the Motor on Your Pool Pump to assist you in replacing the motor.

Hi Gary, It appears that you have a Hayward Super Pump based the photos you submitted. If you want to go up to a 2 HP Motor then you would need the UST1202 2 HP Pool Motor and this 2 HP Hayward Super Pump Drive Train Up Grade Kit Finally for most applications a 2 HP pump will be outputting around 100 Gallons Per Minute (GPM) so you will want to check the flow rating on the side of your filter to make sure your filter can handle at least 100 GPM.

Hello Norman. The Century Motors 2.0 HP Up Rate Motor model B230SE is the direct replacement for your current Century motor. It is recommended that the motor shaft seal, seal plate gasket, and diffuser o-ring be replaced at the same time. These parts are specific to the manufacturer/model of the pump and not the motor. Hello John. The Century Motors 2.0 HP Up Rate Motor model B230SE is 0.4 THP (total horsepower) lower than the B2979. While technically the B230SE is a compatible replacement motor. It is generally accepted that a replacement motor THP should be equal to or greater than the current motor THP. A reduction in THP can result in a shorter motor life span. The Century Motors 2.5 HP Up Rate Motor model UST1252 or the 2.0 HP Full Rate Motor model ST1202 would be more acceptable replacements.
