What is Service Factor?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/11/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
 Reply

A  Answered on 1/12/2012 by InyoPools Product Specialist Patrick P.

A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

I'm trying to replace the motor on my pool pump but all these numbers and abbreviations on the motor label are really confusing me. What do they mean?

Replacing a pool pump motor is not as difficult as it seems. You can try looking here. If you need help figuring out what the information on your label means. If you are still having difficulty figuring it out you can call us at our toll free number or you can send us a photo of your motor label here.

I need to replace an A.O. Smith SP1610Z2MC part number 7-181093-03. Your site says this is the correct motor but my motor is 1.5-.25hp this is not. What is the right motor and part number?

Hi, David. This B975 motor is the correct replacement motor for part number 7-181093-03. The motor is rated at 1 HP but has a service factor of 1.4. When you multiply the HP by the S.F. you get the total hp of the motor making it 1.4 hp.

I have a SP1610Z2MC that needs to be replaced, according to your other Q&A this is the correct replacement. What if I would like to increase my HP, what would I go to, is it a direct replacement with no modifications and is it a good idea.

Hi, Mike. When increasing the motor's hp you will have to replace the impeller or else you will not get an increase in water flow. You can use the B977 motor as a step up using your current impeller but only on the low speed would you see an increase in the water flow.

Hello, I'm replacing a 2008 model year SP1610Z2MC motor and your site calls this pump out as the replacement, but your tech on phone recommended the STS1152. Which is correct and what are the differences between the two? I also want to rebuild the pump at the same time. Salt water pump # SP3010X152AZ. Motor specs, HP 105-.25, FR X56J, RPM 3450/1725, 230 volt, Amps 8.0/2.5 Max 8.7 Thank you for your help.

You can use either the 5387X or the STS1102 as a motor replacement and the seal kit is part number GOKIT2SALT.

I am not sure if I asked this yesterday but just in case I asked about the wrong motor let's do it for this motor becasue I am pretty sure this is the model I need to replace my 1610Z2MC. Let me know if this is correct and I will order the motor from you as well as a strainer lid that is leaking on my pimp. Thank you very much, Thanos

Yes, this is the correct motor replacement and in order to locate the correct lid, you will need the pump housing model name or number that the motor actually bolts to.

I need a pool pump motor and seal kit. I have a Jandy JHP pump with a 1 hp AO Smith/Cent motor. I have attached the labels from both units and you will see I have no model or SF number shown. Can you help me discern which motor I need. I am in CA. The motor label does show a 56J frame, 1 hp motor and amps shown as SF 7.2/14.4. I might be looking at a two speed motor (CA compliant) . Let me know at your earliest convenience. Been down for a week now. Thanks in advance.

Hello Dennis.  The pump label indicates a Jandy Stealth JHP 1.0 HP.  The Stealth Model JHP is a Full Rate Pool Pump (JHPU was UP Rate).  The Century 1.0 HP Square Flange 56Y Dual Speed Full Rate Motor - B2982 would be a compatible, California Title 20 Compliant, replacement motor. The Shaft Seal and Jandy OEM Gasket, Body JHP should be replaced concurrently.  A Pool Timer Dual Speed Pump Timer can be installed for automatic High/Low speed operation. The Toggle Switch and Canopy Kit for 56Y 2-Speed can be installed for manual High/Low speed operation.
