When should I change the sand in my filter?
Reply
You should change the sand in your filter every 5-7 years. You can generally tell that it is time if your pool water is not as clear as it normally is or when you notice the interval between backwashes is shorter. You can use > this guide to walk you through it.

How often do I have to replace the sand in my filter? What is normal operating pressure?
Reply
On a "fresh start-up" a filter would operate anywhere between 10-20 psi. As a general rule of thumb you only want to backwash when the pressure increases 8-10 psi. You want to make certain that the pump is being turned off whenever you move the handle on the valve. Once backwashing is complete (3-5 minutes), you can switch to the rinse option to re-settle the sand bed. Sand will typically last 5-7 years. Premature backwashing will wear down the size of the sand which will cause difficulties such as cloudy water and higher operating pressures.

My pool is a 24 ft. dia above ground (13,500 gallons) and I'm using a 1 hp motor on my pump with 1 1/2 inch pvc plumbing. Will a Hayward #S180T be a good selection to replace my worn out 20 year old sand filter? If not, what model would you recommend?
Thank you.

Hi Rich, The Hayward S180T would be a great replacement sand filter for your sized pool. Also the S180T pairs nicely with a 1 hp pump.

What is the proper size sand filter and pump HP for an 18 foot round above ground poool

Hi Snow, Your filter size is based on the size pump you have and the pump is determine by your size pool and feet of head. If you provide us with your pump size I can confirm if this filter will work for you.

My pump is Hayward SP1580X15 Power-Flo LX Series 1-1/2-Horsepower I'm looking to replace my current sand filter. I would like to get a sand filter that works the best with my current pump. If needed to improve the filtration I can replace the pump as well. Also do they make anything for above ground that can connect to the pump discharge inside the pool that will keep the dirt on the bottom of the pool suspended so the filter can remove? I would like to cut down on how often I have to vaccum.
Reply
Hi Snow, You can improve your filtration without replacing the pump. The Sand Filter W/Top Mount Valve 22" Tank (S220T) would be a good size filter to maximize your filtration. Unfortunately vacuuming would be the only way to remove dirt off the bottom of your pool, you can choose from our selection of Above Ground Pool Cleaners to cut down on how often you will have to vacuum.

I have a 15000 gallon in ground pool with three quarter horse power Hayward super pump will the s180t sand filter be suitable

HI, This filter can work if the flow rate of the pump is 35 gpm or less. You can fin out by Calculating your pool's Feet of Head.

If the pool guys says to order a new sand filter S180T (the kit)…does this $267 include everything I need for a replacement?
Thanks

Yes this would be everything you need for replacement minus the sand and any plumbing supplies like pipe fittings and glue.

I have a hayward sand filter. model no. s180T, the canster has a small crack in the seam, leaking. i just want to replace the canster as everything else is working fine. Can I just order that?

Hi Nora, You can not purchase just the tank alone, the Tank - SX180AA2 comes with the Skirt, Drain and Lateral Assembly.

What size filter should I need for a 27 ft round pool 48" deep. I have a 1.5 hp pump.
Reply
You could get by with this 18" Sand Filter but I would suggest the 21" Hayward Sand Filter as it has larger filtering capacity meaning more time between cleaning your filter and longer life for your 1.5 HP pump.

is the 18 in. sand filter for a above ground pool
Reply
Hi Brian, This 18" Hayward Sand filter is adequate for an above ground pool up to 16,800 gallons with a run time of 8 hours and with a pump that has a flow rate of 35 gpm.

We have a 2.5 hp pump will this sand filter work for us. The pump is oversized for our pool.
Reply
It's going to depend on your total resistance in feet, but most likely that is going to be too small of a filter since it's max flow rate it can handle is 35 gpm.

I had a Hayward S190TSCPES that developed a split in the seam. While under mfg warranty, the dealer replaced with a S180T for a 27' round pool holding 17000 gallons. Since the replacement, I've noticed a decreased flow and more sediment on the bottom of the pool than I did last year. Is this the correct model I have Hayward SP1580X15FP with 1.5" piping.

Hello, this is correct filter, you might want to call Hayward 800-657-2287 to troubleshoot, you might have a lateral problem that is kicking sand in your pool.

Sorry about so many questions, but I am trying to put together my pool package....Would this sand filter suffice for 12000 gallon pool, 1.5hp purline pump, 12 ft. head? The specs show about 6 hour turnaround.....Or should I reduce my pump to 1hp?
Reply
Hi, John. This filter is adequate for a 12,000 gallon pool. However with 12 feet of head which seem to quite low a 1.5 HP pump will be too much if it's being used for normal filtration. Reducing the pump's horsepower would be a start. You do not want your flow rate to exceed 35 GPM using this S180T filter.

I have 12,723 gallon in ground pool with 3/4 hp Hayward priming pump with 1 1/2 piping. Need to replace the filter and top which size do I need. Hayward model number?

Hi Rick, I would suggest the Hayward S210T Sand Filter for your set up.

Looking for the correct filter pairing for a new pump. Recently purchased the Hayward Power-Flo LX, SP1580X15. It shows a 70GPM flow rate, I have an 18 foot round 10,000gl above ground. Any suggestions?

Hi Shane for a Hayward SP1580X15 Power-Flo LX pump, we would suggest the Hayward S220T 22" Sand Filter.

thanks s180t

Hi Tom, the spider gasket for the Hayward S180T is only sold glued into the diverter, you cannot get the spider gasket by itself. Here is a link to the Hayward S180T Diverter with Spider Gasket Glued In that you will require. Also here is a Photo Showing the Spider Gasket Glued Into the Diverter.

I'm trying to find a pressure release valve on here. The skimmer basket looks like a river, instead of it being fully pressurized, I'm thinking it's because there's air in there. Am I right with that assumption? Any ideas on where to start to fix that?
Reply
James, The S180T does not have an air release valve. To lower the pressure, you will need to backwash the filter.

Will the S180T work on an above ground pool, the page says in-ground? It is an 18ft round, 21gpm, 10,000gal. I have a 1hp hayward pump with 1.5" hoses (1 inlet, 1 outlet).

The flange around the top of our sand filter broke off. Is it possible to get a replacement shell for our Advantage Manufacturing High Pressure Sand Filter? it holds 150 lbs. of sand, but we can not read the label for what make or model style it is. The tank is black cylindrical shape. Thank you

Natalie, we apologize for the inconvenience, however, we have been unable to obtain an answer to this question from the manufacturer. We suggest you try calling them and pushing them to see if they can provide any insight on this. Hayward can be reached by calling 800.429.9273.

Hi, We have a really old STA-RITE Hi-Rate sand filer model T-170BP-1. It has cracked and will not work.. I need to know what the best/ best cost replacement would be? It is for an above ground pool..

Hello Nicole. The Sta-Rite Ii-Rate Sand Filter model T-170BP-1 has a filtration area of 1.8 sq ft, an Optimal Flow Rate of 24 GPM, requires 150 lbs. of sand, and has 1 1/2" plumbing size. The Hayward Sand Filter with Top Mount Valve 18" Tank - W3S180T has a filtration area of 1.75 sq ft, a Flow Rating of 35 GPM, requires 150 lbs. of sand, and has 1 1/2" plumbing size. The Hayward W3S180T would be an excellent cost-effective replacement for the Sta-Rite T-107BP-1.
