If I have a large pool pump will I need to have a flow meter for the heat pump?
Reply
According to Hayward their heat pumps have a flow rate range of 30 to 70 GPM, with an optimum flow rate of 45 GPM. If your pump is capable of significantly more flow than this, a flow meter is recommended to insure the flow rate is within the prescribed range.

Can a heat pump be installed indoors?
Reply
Generally no. Heat Pumps work by transferring heat from the surrounding air to the pool water. If a heat pump is installed indoors there must be a continuous supply of warm air from which the heat pump can extract heat. If you must heat the air in the room before the heat pump can extract that heat to heat the pool, there would be no benefit to the heat pump.
Reply
Can a heat pump be installed under a deck?
Reply
No. Any installation that causes the air being discharged from the top of the heat pump to be recirculated back into the heat pump will cause a loss of capacity and efficiency in the heat pump. Installation of a heat pump under a deck, or a low over hang will allow the air being discharged to be drawn back in by the heat pump.

This is the terminology taken straight from the Hayward Heat Pump Pool Heater Limited Warranty ( It is on page 22 of the manual ) " This warranty is valid only if the product is installed according to the HAYWARD specifications. 2) Can the heat pump be set to run a timed schedule like my pool pump.
Reply
Hello Mike, You can install a flow meter in the line to measure the amount of GPM's you are getting at the place where you would plum in the heater. The heat pump will run like an AC unit. SO set it to a temp and it will rise till that temp is met and then it will turn off.

When hooking up the 140,000 but heat pump, normal plumbing shows the automatic chlorinator installed past the heat pump with a back flow preventer. No problem. My question is can you use the chlorine sticks in the skimmer basket safety with the Hayward Heat Pump. This would have chlorine coming from the skimmer basket to the pump, filter and then the Heat Pump before going back to the pool. Will this damage the Heat Pump?
Reply
Hello Jerry, I would never suggest putting any form of chlorine into your skimmer. Doing so will damage your pump, filter, and heater. The purpose of the check valve between the chlorinator and the heat pump is to prevent concentrated amounts of chlorine from entering the heat exchanger. By putting chlorine into the skimmer would send the very highly chlorinated water through your filtration system.

Hi Tom, This unit has the capability to be controlled by an external controller and uses R-410A.

I understand the unit can be controlled by an external device but the TCO allows the heat pump to control the pool pump to keep the water temp at the set point. From what I understand a remote system just allows turn on/off of the heat pump.

We just purchased from you and installed a Hayward Heatpump Pro 140,000 BTU heat pump. Hell of a great unit. Took our above ground 20x40 pool from 55 to 80 in a couple of days. Love it. Question is this. Our pump is manually turned on and off with no timer as of now. How do we shut off the Heat pump when the pump is off. Right now I am turning off the circuit breaker for the heat pump. My question is do I have to do that or can I just shut off the pool pump and let the heat pump turn itself off.
Reply
Jerry, Good to hear you are happy with your purchase. The heat pump has an internal flow sensor. The heat pump should not come on if there is no water flow. You can test this next time you turn the pump off. The only downside is that if the sensor fails for any reason, the heat pump may try to run.

If you are wanting to heat your pool quick a heater, either propane or natural gas, would be the way to go. A heat pump will get it to the temperature that you want it to be, but not as fast as a heater. You would heat your pool efficiently with a 200k or 250k BTU model heater.

Good afternoon Bill, The Hayward Heat Pro Heat Pump 140,000 BTU - HP21404t would be a great heat pump for you. You can figure about 5,000 watts or 5 kilowatts per hour per 100,000 BTU’s for a heat pump. For a typical 100,000 BTU heat pump, that’s 5 kilowatts per hour. The national average for Electricity runs $.13 cents per kilowatt hour. Electricity costs vary widely throughout the United States so checkout this website updating the Electricity Costs for all 50 States. In our example, 1 hour on a heat pump will cost .60 cents.

No it would not be overkill. Bigger when it comes to heaters and heat pumps are usually going to be more efficient. It will be even more efficient if you get a solar cover to go along with it. Then you are heating your pool faster and retaining the heat longer when you are not in the pool.

how far from the filter can I place my heat pump, and does it matter if it in the direct sunlight or shaded from a high fence, thinking a 140,000 btu for a 14,000 gal in ground pool, is this over kill? swimming from late may to early sept in the central Pa area

There is not a set distance just as long as it is between the filter and the chlorinator. It does not matter how much sunlight it receives either.

I have a 20 ft x 36 ft in-ground pool 720 SF surface area and 24,300 gal volume. My pump is a 1 HP size and uses 1-1/2" dia size intake lines. I live in Cincinnati, Ohio. What is the correct size Heat pump and is the pump size and plumbing adequate?
Reply
Yes, the 140k model would be the one you want if you are trying to extend your pool season during the summer months. If you are trying to heat the pool during the winter months or you have a spa you will want a propane or natural gas heater instead of a heat pump.

The warranty on this heating unit is as follows: 2 Year Warranty on manufacturer defects, 5 Year Warranty on Compressor, 10 Year Warranty on Titanium Tube. If you need service on the unit due to warranty issues within the first 2 years, you can contact InyoPools.com or the manufacturer Hayward, after the first two years, you would need to contact the manufacturer for the remaining two parts covered. Please retain the purchase information when referencing a warranty issue.

I have a 20,000 gallon Pool in central Florida. We like to keep our pool around the middle 80's from April thru October. About how hours per day would you need to run your heat pump?

It will depend on the weather everyday, but the heat pump is set up to turn on whenever the water temperature goes below what you set your desired temperature and runs until it is back to that temperature, and will run as long as your pool pump is on.

I have a pool around 22,000 gallons, about 490 ft2. I live in central CA & would like to heat the water 15 degrees over ambient temp 3-4 months of the year. If it's 70 degrees outside, for example, I'd like to get the pool water to 85 degrees. How much electricity (kwH) would you estimate one of your heat pumps to use for that on a monthly basis? I was looking at a 140,000 BTU unit. Would that size be correct? Thanks.
Reply
You would be looking at about $110-160 a month. It will be on the higher end initially because it will have to go from 70 to 85 degrees but once it is there all it has to do is regulate your water temperature and will go toward to lower end for cost.

Will the electric heat pump work if installed in a concrete room next to the pool filter instead of in the outside air
Reply
Hi Tina, no the heat pump does need to be outside as the heat pump draws in the outside air to heat the water. When the heat pump is heating it actually outputs cold air and if the heat pump is inside then the air in the room gets cold and then the heat pump has a hard time heating.

I'm looking for a heat pump that has automatic bypass so when the heater kicks off that I can still run my pool pump for filtering purposes.I normally just leave my pump on all the time.Everything I've read says that running your pool water through the heat pump will cause premature wear. I will install a manual bypass for extreme servicing of the heat pump if necessary but I don't want to have manually valve every time my heat pump is not calling for heat. Do you know of any??

The owners manual says to use 2" PVC pipes, but the description says the unions are CPVC -- which is not compatible with PVC. Are the unions really CPVC?
Reply
Bob, Yes the unions are CPVC. PVC is a thermoplastic polymer, while CPVC is a thermoplastic produced by the chlorination of PVC resin. PVC is typically used for a wide number of applications, while CPVC is mostly used for hot and cold water pipes (pool heaters/heat pumps). They can be used/plumbed together.

Will this work in the Pittsburgh area for a 24 foot 54 inch deep pool? My biggest concern is extending the season heck it's August and we are seeing temps in 50s at night I already use solar cover which helps but when the day light temps start to stay lower it's going to make the temps suffer. been contiplating the 125k or this one.
Reply
Hello Lorenzo- For your area and pool size I would recommend going no smaller than a 140k Heat pump. This will get you the best efficiency as well as extend the season to April-September. I would also recommend using a solar cover or liquid solar cover such as Natural Chemistry COVER FREE 1 Gallon - 07109 to retain the heat in the pool.

Can the heat pump plug into standard 120 gfci outlet that the pool pump is plugged into or does it need a dedicated line
Reply
Hello Rob this unit must be installed to it's own 42-60 amp dedicated breaker. This heat pump must be connected to a bonding grid with a solid copper conductor wire gauge 8 AWG or larger to comply with Article 680 of the NEC. All Hayward heat pumps are designed for copper conductors only. The National Electrical Code (NEC) in Article 680, and most other codes require that all metallic components of a pool structure, including reinforcing steel, metal fittings and above ground equipment, be bonded together with a solid copper conductor wire gauge 8 AWG or larger. The heat pump, along with pumps and other pool equipment must be connected to this bonding grid. A bonding lug is provided on the rear of the base pan of the heat pump to facilitate bonding.

Automatic erosion type chlorinators, if used, must be installed downstream (between the heat pump and the pool) of the heat pump, and a check valve (or Hartford Loop) installed in a manner that will not allow the raw chlorine to drain back to the heat pump when the water pump is off. Failure to follow the instructions may result in property damage. The heat pump is designed for a maximum flow rate of 75 GPM. An External Bypass Assembly can be added to regulate the flow rate through the heat exchanger to prevent damage. Failure to install an External Bypass Assembly with a flow rate of 75 GPM or higher will void the warranty.

Joe, The HP21404TC can still operate at temperatures as low as 40F. This is useful especially in regions that experience cooler ambient temperatures. The standard version can only operate at temperatures of 50F and above.

I recently added a solar pool pump to my home. If the heater is on while the solar pump is running, when the water flow becomes too low for the heater, will it damage the heater for it to remain on?
Reply
Hello Mike- The Hayward Heat Pro Heat Pump 140,000 BTU - HP21404t has an internal flow switch which will shut the heater off if the water flow becomes too low for the heater to safely operate, resulting in the heater turning itself off.

Hello, I have a 35,000 gallon inground pool. Can you tell me what size heater I would need? Thanks!

Hi. For a 35K pool, a 140K BTU heat pump will be sufficient. However, depending on where you're located and how fast of a temperature increase you want, you may need multiple units.

In ground pool. 15,000 gallons, ~600 sq ft surface area. Want to extend season by month in fall and month in spring, Live in Charlotte NC. Sun keeps water at nominally 80 degrees mid May through mid Sept. In summer would like to bump temp up to 84 from 80. Questions: (1.) would 125,000 BTU Heat Pro be OK? (2.) If 125,000 OK, would 140,000 do the job more economically?
Reply
Hi Terry, Based on the information you supplied I would suggest the 140,000 BTU unit, you probably could get by with the 125,000 BTU unit but for the few hundred dollar difference I think you will be really happy having the extra BTU's during the colder months when you are trying to extend your pool season. I have this larger BTU unit and I have been quite happy with the results.

Hi - my old heat pump used a 50 amp breaker. Will this be sufficient to run this heat pump? I don't see a rated amperage on any of the documentation that came with the Hayward Heat Pro Heat Pump 140,000 BTU.

Tony, Hayward has this listed requiring a minimum 50 amp breaker.

I have not had a pool heater and am thinking about purchasing the 21404t. My thinking is the heater should not work when the pump is off. Is there a timer on the heat pump to coordinate it with the pool pump? This way the heater does not run when the pool pump is not running.
Reply
Hi, Andrew. Heaters are designed only to run once water flow is detected. It will not run if the pump is not running.
Reply
Is this heat pump reversible? I.e., can it also cool? A problem in Texas is water feels like bath water in summer. Lowering temperature by 5 or 10 degrees would be great. If this one is not reversible, could you suggest one that is?
Reply
Hi, Philip. This unit is unable to cool. You can use the following units, Hayward - HP31204T, Raypak - R8450TI-E-HC, Pentair - 460959. The BTU ratings are different.

What size wire do we need from disconnect to heater?

Hello, The wire size will depend on the distance from the breaker to the heat pump. I strongly recommend contacting a licensed electrician who is familiar with your local codes.

Hi, This is a brand new unit, the warranty is 2 Year Warranty on manufacturer defects, 5 Year Warranty on Compressor, and 10 Year Warranty on Titanium Tube.

I just had the heat pump installed and got it running today. I have a duel speed Hayward pump so I tried it on low first to see if it would be enough floww but got a HP error code. So I kicked it on high now and it's been fine. Just stinks that is happened as normally always leave the pump on low during the day. Now trying to figure out the best way to run this heater and pump. Any ideas welcome on what to do Hate to leave it on high but hate to not have heater on either.
Reply
Hello Lorenzo- Unfortunately these heaters, as you know, require a minimum flow rate to operate. You would need to either find a variable speed pump that you can program such as the PureLine Prime Variable Speed Pool Pump 1.65 HP - PL2605, or only heat the pool when necessary and on high speed. By getting the VS pump you would be able to find the lowest possible RPM to run the heater instead of being stuck with just High Speed as an option.
Reply
Can the Hayward Heat Pro heaters be left on all the time where they heat when the pool pump is running or do the need to be manually switched on and off each day while the pool pump is running to prevent equipment damage?

Hi, Richard. These Heat Pumps can be powered at all time using the water flow of the pump to turn it on.

Does this pump come with a check valve?
If not which one do I purchase that fits it ?

Hi. This Heat Pump does not come with a Check Valve, it's sold separately. They are available based on your plumbing size.

Our pad has a slight angle to allow for runoff, we plan to have the front/back of the unit facing the side of the pad such that the sides will be on the high and low side of the pad for runoff. Will the unit operate correctly sitting at a slight angle ( probably 1 inch drop over 5 feet or so)?
Reply
Hi, Jeff. The unit must be placed on a leveled pad, it has its own drainage for condensation runoff.

I have a Hayward VS pump. What minimum speed would you recommend for the heater to activate? Will the addition of a heather slow down the normal flow of water at the return jets?

Hi, Anthony. The RPM setting will be based on the pump model and the Total Dynamic Head (TDH) of your pool. Adding a heater can slow down the water flow.

2) What is average power Rqmts (in Amps)? Does the power requirement change depending upon the outside temperature?
3) Does the heat pump monitor the water flow and shut off if the flow is zero or too low?
Thank-you!

Hi, Paul. You get the unit, unions and a manual. You will need a Check Valve if you have a chlorine feeder. The average power required is 30 amps. It does not, just the operating time. Yes, it is activated by the water pressure switch.

Will this unit heat both pool and spa.
Reply
Yes, this unit can heat both a pool and spa, especially if they are plumbed into the same pump/filter system. Now id they are not then the unit will only heat one body of water.
Reply
We have a hot solar water heater currently. Heat is transferred via a heat exchanger. We are thinking of upgrading the heat exchanger and was wondering if installing this type of heat pump would be beneficial. If there's no sun or no hot water produced by the solar system, the heat pump would provide the heat transfer. If solar is active, then pre-heated water would be passed through the heat pump without requiring any additional heat.
Is this a feasible use case?
Reply
Hi, Larry. This is feasible for a pool application that has its own filtration system and solar controller.

How do heat pumps work?
Reply
Pool heat pumps actually work in reverse of your home air conditioning unit. Unlike heaters, pool heat pumps use the ambient air surrounding the unit to heat your pool’s water. In short, the unit transfers the heat from the outside air to heat the water.

I currently have a gas heater to heat my spa. i do heat the pool occasionally but it is quite expensive, I was thinking I could use a electric heat pump in conjunction (using separate lines for inflow and outflow) to heat my pool and keep it at a comfortable temperature around 88 degrees. would I be able to run a 2hp pump and HeatPro pump from solar panels only? what would the KW requirement be?
Reply
Hi, Rick. You can install a heat pump to use when you don't want to use the gas heater. Between the pump and the heat pump you will need to generate 10 kWh.

We keep a 16 x 30 pool with approx. 15,000 gallons at 83 degrees. Nights in Jan and Feb. get to 45 and most days do not reach 70. Sometimes, it will reach 70. Economically, does it make sense to turn the heater off for 10 cool days and then bring it back up to 83. Does it make more sense to leave it on.. I am thinking it will cost more to turn it off for 10 days, have it get down to 60 and then bring back to 83. How long does it take to get 15,000 gallons from 60 to 83 degrees?

Hello, This will be the proper size for your pool. However, we would not know how long it would take to heat up your pool because it all depends on the outside temperature.

Hi Jerry,For your pool size a 110-125,000 BTU will be sufficient. Yes, it would be smarter to get an 140,000 BTU unit which would heat your pool much faster if you have a large enough pool pump. I live in Clifton Park NY and have an 18 x 36 oval pool will this heater work for me so I can swim in September? I presently have 400,000 BTU gas that has died. Sub service to my shed is 220 run with 10 gage wire so this should be no problem.
Reply
Yes, Steve, the Hayward HeatPro Heat Pump 140,000 BTU - HP21404T will be a sufficient replacement for your 18 x 36 oval pool.

I just bought a new Hayward Heat Pump HeatPro pool heater and have a question about it's operation. The fan runs before the compressor starts, just wondering if this is normal? We had a Jandy heat pump before and the fan didn't start until the compressor kicked on.
Thank you in advance for any help you can offer on the subject.
Best Regards,
GM Woodruff
Reply
Greg, yes, the fan on the HeatPro Heat Pump 140,000 BTU - HP21404T will come on before the compressor to make sure that the cabin is cool and the fan is doing its job before the compressor kicks on. If the compressor came on and the fan was not turning it could overheat.

Will this be a sufficient size heat pump to keep my pool around 80-85 degrees from mid May till mid September in southern New Jersey?

Hi, Bob. I will need to know the pool size or the surface area and if you're going to be using a solar cover in order to answer your question.

How to remove LOC code from the display and set the temperature? Impossible to be removed. Manual instructions followed as per photos below. Thank you
Hi, AMI. I had to walk a customer through this same issue. He had to repeat the HPEC-003 steps a couple of times but it worked.

There appears to be a problem with the thermometer on my heater. Under "mode"it shows unrealistic pool temperatures (like 105 degrees!), It would appear to need calibrating. How do I do that>

Hi, David. The temperature sensor - SMX306000024 cannot be recalibrated, it will have to be replaced

Do you have to have a certified Hayward installer set up heater. If yes how do you find one? i live in New windsor , NY and am replacing a propane Hayward heater.

Hi, Joseph. The installer does not have to be certified by Hayward, they just have to be licensed in the state.

1)Is this compatible with the Pentair Intellitouch Automation. Any instructions?
2)How many and what kind of wire would be used between the controller and the heater?
3)Could the heat pump run without the pool pump running ? Why am asking is because if the heater has to run for a few days continuously to begin with at the starting of the season , would the pool pump also run for days together?

Reply
Hi, AGS. Yes, this unit can be wired to the heater terminal on the IntelliTouch. It will use a two (2) wire connection. The heat pump will only run when the pump is running.

Am I able to hook this up to 1.5 inch PVC pipe for an above ground pool. Will a 1.5 X 2 inch coupling work for this unit?
Reply
Hi, Todd. The preferred plumbing size is 2", however, you can use 1-1/2" pipes. A 2" x 1-1/2" reducer will be required.
Reply
Would this unit be too big for an 18x33 foot oval pool. 54 inches high. roughly 15,000 gallons. solar rings will be used at night. It is in Iowa and will be used middle of May til end of September. Thank you.
Reply
The formula we use is surface area of pool x temperature rise x 12=BTU required to heat. The temperature rise is the difference between average coldest temperature where you live and what you want for a pool temperature.
Reply
No, this unit would not be too big, the HP21254T would be more than sufficient since the pool is being covered. It would heat the pool faster and better in the fringe months.

I keep the temp in my 25k unground pool at 87. My question is should I leave my heat pump on 24/hrs ? It gets cool at night even In the summer here in upstate NY drops down to low 60s. It heats very fast during the day kicks on only once or twice at night though it runs a few hours. Should I turn this unit off on cold nights or set it and forget it ? Just don’t want a crazy energy bill. Thanks !

We apologize for the inconvenience, however, we have been unable to obtain an answer to your question from the manufacturer. We suggest contacting Hayward directly to see if they can offer any advice.

Leave it on. The unit will run when the pump is on, you can use a cover to retain the heat to allow the unit to operate less.
Reply
This heater will pull more heat when the air is warmer. It would not hurt to turn it off at night when it gets colder.

Can the air exhaust of a Pool Heat Pump be utilized to cool an adjacent garage ? The unit is located against the wall of a garage that is well insulated but gets pretty warm in So Cal summers where I spend many hours.

Hi, Steven. Yes, you're able to vent the cool air from the heat pump into your garage.

Hi, Clint. I am looking to build a 12 x 20 ft pool and 6 x 6 ' hot tube. Location is Santa Monica, CA. Min ambient air temp is 60 in winter and obviously higher during day and summer. Would a heat pump be able to bring hot tub up to 100F? What model would you recommend? Thanks.
Reply
It really depends on your heating needs for example how hot do you want to maintain the pool and in which months you will be using the heater. I would suggest looking at this Electric Heater Pool Sizing Guide to determine your needed KW and then refer back to the heaters on this page Raypak Electric Heaters.
For heating purposes other than a pool or spa, can this raise water temperature from 30 deg. C to to 50 deg. C?

Hi. It's possible, however, we will need to know more info about the application for which this unit will be used.

Good afternoon, Yes based on the information provided we would recommend the HeatPro Heat Pump 140,000 BTU. For installers you would need to check Haywards website under Dealer Locator to find an approved installer.

Is this good for an above ground pool 24' x 12' appox 7,000 gallons ? We live in Los Angeles about 2 miles from the beach. Often times the average temperature is between 71 to 77 degrees
Reply
The formula used is surface area of pool x temp rise x 12= btu req to heat. So neither of those asking questions gave you enough information to tell them which one to use. The temp rise is the difference between average coldest temp where they live and what they want for a water temp.
Reply
Because you are closer to the beach you will get more wind which will cool the pool. Normally this would be a larger unit then what you need, but because of where you are at it would be fine.

We have purchased a home in Port Charlotte, FL where the old pool heat pump needs replacing. It is a small pool of only 2000 gal. Is a heat pump the best option, and if so what size would you recommend.

Glenn, for your 2000 gallon pool we would not suggest such a large heat pump. I would suggest something like the E3T Electric Digital 18kW Pool/Spa Heater - 017123.

Does the Hayward model have a way of turning on the pool filter pump?
Does the heat pump turn on when the pool pump timer turns the filter on, or do you have to turn on the heat pump daily?
Reply
Good day, this unit does not have an option to turn on a pump. We would recommend the Raypak Classic Series Heat Pump 140,000 BTU - 016033. Either unit will turn on when there is water flowing through the unit and it will need to achieve the desired temperature.
Reply
Does this tie into the existing filtration system. If not will this work with 250 GPM ?
Reply
Hi. Yes, this is plumbed after the filter of the circulation system. This unit is unable to handle a flow rate of 250 GPM. It can handle a max flow rate of 75 GPM. A manual bypass will need to be install.

I have a customer who purchased a pool heat pump 1 year ago. He is now losing Freon. Since this is a closed system, what could be the cause of the Freon loss?
When he purchased the new heat pump, he also converted over to a salt water pool. Could his salt level have anything to do with the damage to his coil? Are your heat pump coils made of aluminum or copper?
Reply
Hi, Jody. A leak in the freon line is the issue. This can be caused by several factors including corrosion from a saltwater environment. The unit will have to check out by a qualified technician. You can reach out to Hayward since the unit is within the warranty period.

Hi, Mary. A transformer is not needed for these units. All of the units will have to be installed with parallel water flow.

Hello, I am planning to purchase this heat pump and I have three questions:
1. what type of electrical wire do your recommend, knowing that the distance between the pump and my electrical panel is about 100 feet,
2. what type of valve do you recommend I use between the heat pump and my chlorinator,
3. I use 1.5 inch PVC pipe with my vario-pump but it looks like the in and out pipe or much larger. Is that a problem?
Thank you!

One more question...
4. I would like to be able to control the heat pump from a distance. Knowing that my wif signal by the heat pump is pretty strong, what controller would you suggest I use, knowing that it will have to activate the water pump to a certain RPM for the heat pump to work right? I use a Hayward Vario pump.
Thank you!

Hi Steve, this unit would be good for your size swimming pool and will allow some extra capacity, quicker heat time, and potentially less wear on the unit itself.
Reply
Does this come with the electric cable and what do I need for an outlet what size is cord?
Reply
A cable is not included with the W3HP21404T heat pump. The heat pump should be hard-wired 240v to a 60 amp breaker. The gauge of the wire would depend on the distance to the breaker, but we recommend consulting an electrician to confirm.

Would this heater be sufficient for a 30,000 gallon pool?
Reply
Hello Christopher. The Hayward HeatPro 140,000 BTU Heat Pump would be an excellent choice for a 30,000-gallon pool. The 140K BTU would deliver a quicker heat rise than heat pumps with a smaller BTU rating given the same pool water temperature, air temperature, and humidity conditions.

I installed this heat pump recently on a 32,000 gallons pool with a Pentair VS pump running at 2600 rpm, a Quad DE 100 Filter with a multiport valve. Filter is backwashed and showing pressure at 15 psi. However, I keep getting FLO error on the heat pump in FILTER mode. I know there is good water flow as the salt generator connected downstream from the heat pump works fine. Interestingly, the FLO error disappears if I switch to recirculate mode on the multiport valve. Any ideas on the issue?
Reply
My guess (This one is hard to tell without being there) is there really is not enough flow getting to your heat pump. So I am guessing it is more a problem with your multiport valve. Maybe it's not turning all the way to get proper flow to the heater.
Reply
Thank you. It is an interesting viewpoint. Multiport valve is less than a year old. Would it fail so quickly? If there is an issue with the multiport valve, would the salt generator also not show a flow error? I would appreciate if you can share any ideas on testing and isolating a multiport valve problem. Thank you.
Reply
Again I am just throwing out ideas here. So although the salt generator is showing it is getting enough water flow it might not be enough for the pool heater. I would check to see if the multiport valve is opened all the way while in the position that sends it to your heater (or when you are having the issue). It might be that it is not completely turning to allow the full flow to come out. The other thought is maybe there is a clog somehow in the valve. Of course it could be an issue with your heater, but if you are able to get proper flow through your heater when the valve is in a different position it points to it not being a problem with your heater, but rather an dissue with your plumbing. It's either the way it is set up or a problem with one of the valves.

Is the exterior temp ever too hot for this unit to run? Also, how well does it operate at 60 degree temps? I live in NH and am looking for a unit that will help extend our season into May and Sept. Average temps in NH in May at highs of 70 and lows of 45.
Reply
This unit will operate fine at hot outdoor temperatures, but the BTU output does drop as the ambient temperature and humidity drops. The brochure for the heater does not have information on 60 degree ambient air, but you can expect to only get 85,000 BTUs when the exterior temperature is 50 degrees. See the sales brochure for more complete information on the performance of the heater in different conditions and be sure to view our guide on Sizing Your Pool Heater and How to Select an Inground Pool Heater to be sure you get a heater with the performance you need for the size of your pool.
