I am now replacing the shaft assembly on my Pentair Whisperflow pump. The spring assembly has an enlarged silver metal ring on it. My previous pump does not have this.
1. Should I take the silver metal assembly off the spring assembly?
2. If I leave the silver metal ring on does it go towards the motor housing or the impeller?

Mike- When replacaing the PENTAIR SHAFT SEAL ASSEMBLY OEM (071734S) part # 5074-16 on a Pentair Whisperflo pump, the metal ring on the shaft seal will go into the center of the SEAL PLATE - Wfe (074564) part # 5074-18A. If you have a whisperflo your old shaft seal should have that same metal cup inserted into the seal plate with the black ceramic piece of the shaft seal pointed towards you.

I have an IntelliFlo VF pump that is just over 3 years old. Yesterday, it started squealing at speeds above about 2,000 RPM. It seems like it's coming near the back of the motor, but it's hard to tell. Does it need new seals and bearings? I don't see any water leaking from the pump.

Hi Rod, It sound like the bearings is going bad. You can either replace the bearings or the entire motor. I would also recommend replacing the shaft seal.

Will this seal work for a salt water pool? The generic one, specifically mentions for salt water usage, but this one does not.
Thank you.

(4 out of 5 stars) Special tool...

Pros: fixed the problem
Cons: HARD TO INSTALL
Pump ops manual do not mention the "special tool" to install the shaft seal tha has a small interference with its casing, figure out the special tool is a 1" PVC connector that you use to puth the seal into placewithout damaging it! a $0.33 investment, not bad
