Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

I have the AO Smith Part #7-177896-22, HP 1.5, SF 1.50 and FR Y56Y. Recently it started making a very loud noise while it is pumping. It continues to pump the water for my pool, but makes this loud noise. Can the pump be repaired or does it need to be replaced?

Good afternoon Jim, Sounds like bearings. This is repairable but a little technical we do sell the bearings and have a how to guide on our site with a video. You can purchase the bearings also part#6203. I would recommend taking it to a professional motor repair shop if you are unsure.

Thank you for your assistance. I think the best is for me to buy a new motor rather than tackle the bearings. Do I also need the repair kit which has the various O rings, etc. ?

Good morning Jim, Yes I would recommend replacing the seal and o-rings. The shaft seal is the most important but since you have it out you might as well replace everything. If you let me know what type of pump you have I can refer the correct kit.
