What is Service Factor?
Reply
Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

I am replacing this motor but why would I need 2 hp instead of a lesser hp?
Reply
If you go with a lesser horsepower motor you will also need to downsize your impeller. I would also need to know what the distance is from where your pump is to the main drain in your pool to determine flow rate to see if you would be able to downsize your motor. Also, if you have any additional features such as, waterfall, suction cleaner, solar heater, etc, anything that requires extra pressure from a bigger motor.

I need a replacement motor with a catalogue number B124 and part number 159987. I fund it on your website, but it says it's 2.0 horsepower. Mine, the one that died, is 2.4. So is the one on your website an adequate replacement?

Took info from old motor plate, talked to a rep from INYO to assure exact replacement. With a little home electrical and mechanical knowledge only. Disassembled motor from water pump taking notes and pictures of how electrical wires where connected on motor. Motor replacement came in. Verified it was same motor information. Checked power breaker off. Connected wires per pics and notes taken and tested motor worked ok b4 connecting to pump. Next bolted to pump as was b4 and tightened. Turned breaker on and clicked motor to turn on/off. It clicked but did not turn on. Clicked on off for a second time and only clicked but did not spin. Loosened one full turn all 4 bolts tightening motor to pump and pulled motor back to loosen from pump the one full turn I had loosened the 4 bolts. Again I clicked pump motor on/off and the motor spun freely, Cool, next I took 4 equal thickness washers about 3/16 thick and used them to separate the motor to the pump. Re tightened the 4 bolts with the washers between the motor and the pump and turned on the pump. It turned on smooth and very quiet. With all the concerns I had. The exchange of the motor was easy. Safety first. Make sure power is off when making electrical and mechanical connections. When testing do quick on off to assure things work so as to reduce probability of damaging something.
