Mike - When you take the top handle assembly off (6 screws) you should see a large O-ring just under the lip of the top assembly. See step 4 of "How To Replace a Pool Multiport Valve Spring". The assembly is upside down so the O-ring is on the lower portion of the picture. This O-ring has to be in place and not stretched or damaged to contain the water.Reply

I replaced my SP 714 key cover and handle assembly and tightened the screws evenly and snug, but not too tightly. Water squirted out all around the assembly when I turned the pump on. Should I have used some kind of sealant around the flange before screwing down?Reply

removing MPV - If you have an above ground pool, the water to the filter is gravity fed, and in this case you will have to shut off the water to the pump before removing the multiport valve.Reply

kpwb - The white washer under the handle might be broken or a portion of your spider gasket might have come out and is getting caught as you rotate the valve. Check your spider gasket. Then check the white washer. See our guide on "How To Replace a Pool Multiport Valve Spring" for instructions on removing the white washer. On your bottom pipe leak, sounds like the connection is leaking. You will probably have to redo the piping to that port to correct the leak. Most manufactures do not sell the labels on the top of the valves anymore. I am trying to build HTG on different labels put haven't got there yet.Reply

Why is my multi port valve handle so hard to turn now to backwash, rinse and filter? There is a white ring below it. Does that need to be replaced. Also, there is a leak out the bottom pipe when I filter my pool. Will the spider gasket fix this? One more thing, is there a replacement for the actual writing on the very top? Mine is so old I can hardly read it. I just know where back wash, rinse and filter is!! ThanksReply

maimai - Sounds like you may have a suction leak that is building up back pressure in your filter tank. If so this pressure is being released every time you switch settings - backwash. Try this. When you get low pressure again, instead of going through a full backwash cycle, just change the setting from filter to backwash to relieve the pressure. Then reset the handle to filter and see if you have full flow again. If so, look for a suction leak in the pipes and connections going from the pool to the pump. My equipment works great after backwashing but water going into pool looses pressure about every hour. I backwash and pressure is great but slowly gets weaker and weaker and have to backwash every hour to keep water going into pool at a good pressure. Do i need to replace any gaskets or o-rings? please help, summer half over and haven't been able to use pool yet! thanksReply

RBW - No, you do not have to drain the tank. The water in the tank may be under pressure. All you have to do is open the relief valve and the water will spray out for 5 to 10 seconds until the pressure is released.Reply

No, I didn't purchase new key assembly...I removed the valve handle to install a new white plastic "gasket" placed between key assembly and bottom of handle and then replaced the handle with pin.Reply

rcole727 - It sounds like the handle on your multiport valve is installed 180 degrees off. When you replaced the gasket filter, did you have to buy and replace the key assembly with the gasket pre-glued? If so, you had to take the handle off the old key assembly to replace it. It is possible that when you replaced the handle, you flipped its position so that the filter operations are reversed - filter = backwash; waste = recirculate; closed = rinse. I have a sp715 x32 and replaced spider gasket. Now, when I place the handle to filter, the backwash function begins backwashing. When I switch to backwash the filter function appears to function. When I switch to waste to check that function the pool jets push out water similar to a filter function. Any idea whats going on?,Reply

Bruce - We no longer carry this gasket. The spider gasket is not available separately and can only be purchased glued into the key/seal assembly. If you want to try to locate an old gasket by itself on-line, its part number was 4703-23.Reply

valve position - I'm not sure what you mean by "I don't know how to position spider gasket I've tried 3 ways". On the SP714 Multiport valve there is only one way to install the top of the valve (which is tied directly to the positioning of the spider gasket). When installed, the top of the valve must line up with the tab on the outside diameter of the valve body. This tab is located between the "closed" and "backwash" positions. If the top valve assembly is not lined up with the tab, you will have water flowing out the top of the valve and the ports will not be lined up with the top label settings.Reply

Sand in pool - Do you set the multiport valve to rinse after you backwash your system. This is required to rinse the sand of debris including fine sand. It also compresses the sand for better filtering. Check your spider gasket to see if it is damaged and allowing dirty water to return to the pool. Make sure that you turn off the pump each time you change the valve setting or you can damage the gasket.Reply

Horseshoe - Check to see that you spider gasket in set properly. Remember to turn your pump off each time you move the valve handle. If you don't, you can damage your gasket. My SP715 multi port valve was leaking at the handle. I was also having a slow stream of water comming out of my backwash outlet. I ordered a new multiport valve, o-ring, and spider gasket. I replaced all of this and am still getting a slow stream of water out of my backwash outlet. Any thoughts????Reply

mgzych - Your problem is a common symptom for a damaged spider gasket. Unfortunately, Hayward no longer sells just the spider gasket for that valve. You have to buy the Key/Seal Assembly with the gasket glued in. See our how to guide on taking off the spring for information on replaceing this assembly.Reply

Mulligan Man - According to one manufacturer, the glue they use should peel out with a small screwdriver. Someone may have used the wrong glue on your unit. The rep cautioned against using harsh chemicals that may eat into the plastic. If you are unable to remove most of the glue and residual gasket with a small screwdriver, you may have to purchase a new plate that the gasket fits into.Reply

Hi Inyo. WE have a Pac Fab Hi Flow Valve and the tech data parts sheet I have from this is for Cover assemblies 26-1049,26-1050,or 26-1142. We have been experiencing increased leaking out of the valve the past 3 years and believe it is the spider seal diverter part number 4623-10. The old Seal Diverter is set into the Plate assembly and appears to have been glued in and is very difficult to remove. It is a 5 spoke and is close to 7.5" diameter seal. I am having difficulty removing the old seal from the groove in the plate where the new seal will fit with appropriate glue part number SPX071029- I don't want to bang up the plate by digging into the groove which may impact the seating of the new valve - any suggestions??Reply

nicspool - Recheck your spider gasket to make sure it is seated properly. Then check your handle spring. If it is weak or broken, it may not be providing enough pressure to close the required ports. See our guide on replacing a multiport valve spring.Reply

Mike - I talked to a couple of vendors and they both say there is no easy way to remove a glued in spider gasket. They use a small screwdriver to work it out. Takes a good hour. When you glue in the new gasket, Hayward recommends using a 3M adhesive, PN SPX0710Z9. It's less permanent and makes removal easier. Don't use super glue.Reply

Russ - If your gasket looks exactly like the one in our guide - with 4 spokes, it fits on a SP714T valve. Unfortunately we no longer sell that gasket by itself. It only comes glued into the diffuser. See part number 4703-23. Note: any reference I see for a SP714T1 valve shows a 5 spoke gasket.Reply
