What is Service Factor?
Reply
Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
Reply
We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
Reply
A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

I am changing out a my b853 motor for a B2853 motor. Is there a difference in the connections?
Reply
This is the same motor there will be no difference in the connections. The B853 and B2853 are simply alternate part numbers for the same motor.
Reply
IS this a reversible motor. I bought it new, installed it to pump. primed the pump, but it still does not pull water. Checked all the seals, etc.
Reply
A single phase motor such as this will only spin in one direction. A three phase has the ability to be wired incorrectly and spin the wrong way. Please check to make sure the impeller is clear of any debris and the pump back lid is secured and the o-ring beneath is lubed properly. It sounds more like an air leak than a motor issue.

Is it OK to apply large holed screen over the vent holes on my Century 1 HP pool motor body? The lizards here in Florida always try to get inside.

Peter, We sell a pool motor cover. If you plan on making one, the vent holes would have to be large enough so that the motor would not over heat.

What is part number for white and what gaskets do I need? Do I need any connectors?
Reply
Hi Gary - We only carry this motor in Black and not the almond color that comes with the original pump. Most likely you have the Pentair Whisperflo if so then we would suggest the Pentair Whisperflo Tune Up Kit which will include the shaft seal and all o-rings and gaskets needed for your motor replacement. As far as connectors go, I am assuming you are speaking of unions, these are quick disconnects which make the removal of your pump very easy and eliminates the need for cutting any pipe. If you do have the Pentair Whisperflo then I would suggest the Pentair Whisperflo Unions here.

In a previous post you said that the B853 and 2853 are the same motor but I beg to differ. The B2853 has I reverse thread 1/4 20 type bolt that threads in the end of the shaft to secure the impeller. The B853 does not. Why is that if they are supposed to be the same.
Reply
The B2853 is the direct replacement for the discontinued B853. They added the reverse female thread to the shaft because several pumps have an impeller screw.

My old pool motor seized, (sta-rite supermax 1hp. That's great to hear that you were able to save so much money by doing the pool motor replacement yourself. Yes most definitely you could use your old impeller and difusser. We have a few great videos which I think should help you out quite a bit when you do this job. The first video I would suggest is the How to Replace a Pool Pump Motor Video the Second video would be the How to Replace a Pool Pump Impeller Video and the third would be the How to Wire a Pool Motor Video.

Hi there, The motors can be swapped with no problem. The difference between a 48Y frame motor and 56Y is that the 48Y has a smaller barrel (i.e. is smaller in diameter). You can put the smaller 48Y frame motor on the pump base. The 48Y frame motors come with a rubber spacer to make up for the smaller circumference. If I'm not mistaken, most of the Sta-Rite pumps should be 48Y frame motors. If you have a 56Y on there, you may want to check the pump base/bracket. Sometimes when going from a 48Y to a 56Y, the base has to be cut to fit the larger motor. As for the impeller screw, the newer motors don't need it. You can simply thread on the impeller and you do not need the impeller screw. As far as I know, only the OEM branded motors would come with the opening in the shaft for the impeller screw. Here is a good article on the topic Do I Need a Impeller Screw For My Pool Pump Motor.

We would need to know the make and model of your pump common manufacture names would be Hayward, Pentair, Sta-Rite, etc.. common model names would be Super Pump, Whisperflo, Dura-Glas II etc.. If you could supply us with this information along with your horsepower and service factor which are on your motor label then we can give you the correct impeller and difuser.

Hi Aron, Here is the Proper Replacement Motor for Your 7-196336-20 Motor. A Y56Y frame and a P56Y frame would be the same thing, all you need to worry about is the 56Y portion.

Hi Mike, If your Jandy Stealth Pump is from 2006 to current then you would require the 1 HP Jandy Stealth Full Rate Motor for models 2006 and Newer you would also require the Jandy Stealth 2006 & Newer Shaft Seal. If your pump is from before 2006 then you would require the 1 HP Jandy Stealth Full Rate Motor for models 2005 and Older you would also require the Jandy Stealth 2005 & Older Shaft Seal. Based on your service factor and frame type I believe you have the 2006 and newer version as both of your specifications match up to the motor used on the newer version of the pump.

The direct single speed replacement motor is the B853. You can also use a dual speed model being the B2980T but needs to be wired at 230 volt only. Then ofcourse you can use a variable speed motor which would be the ECM16SQU. For that model though you may need to change the impeller and diffuser to use this model to it's fullest capacity.

Hi Tom, No the correct replacement for your 7-193993-05 motor on your Jandy SHPF 1.0 pump is the B848. Thx,

Hi Nelson, Yes, you can replace the motor you have with the Century B853 motor and connect it to your existing pump. We recommend replacing the pump shaft seal and o-ring but we will need to know the model of the pump which is what the motor is connected to.

One more question...are instructions included ? There is a breaker at the pump to shut off the electric. I thought of calling a pool repair company but decided to look for a motor first.

Hi Nelson, When you purchase the motor only wiring instructions are included. You can view our How To: Replace a Pump Motor guide for run down of how it's done.

A good dual speed replacement motor is part number B981. It's a .75 HP motor but because of the service factor brings the total horsepower to 1.25HP which is the same total horsepower of your current motor. The seal kit that would go along with that is GOKIT32 (chlorine), GOKIT32SALT (saltwater).

Yes, that is the correct motor replacement and you may need either the old style or new style shaft seal but is based on the serial number. You can view the two types listed on key 5 on the parts diagram here. You will need the serial number of the pump housing to confirm.

I am needing to replace a Century PN 193985. You suggested a B853. All the specifications seem to match up except the amps. The amp on the replacement is 6.6/13.2 and on my motor they are SF 7.1/14.2. Are there any issues with these being different? Also, what pump shaft seal do you recommend for a FLO PRO (Jandy Pro Series) Model FHPM1.0 SELF-PRIMING?
What else would you recommend I would need?
Thank you

Hi, Tyke. This B853 motor will be more energy efficient than your existing motor. You will need additional parts like the Pump Shaft Seal - R0479400 (OEM), PS-4280 (Heavy Duty), Diffuser/Impeller Hardware - R0480400, Backplate O-ring - R0480300 and or the Lid O-ring - R0480200.

I currently have a Centry motor part number 0-F56AA37A01-04 that needs to be replaced. I seems like I need to replace it every other year. Is that the life expectancy or do I needed to change something? Possibly another brand?
Thanks,

Motors have an average life expectancy of 4-7 years or seasons. You may want to have your system inspected. Using a variable speed motor then utilizing the lower RPM'S could potentially gain the extra life. A replacement variable speed motor for your application would be the model ECM16SQU.

We will need the pump model number, not the motor to verify the correct shaft seal or tune-up kit needed. The motor(s) are able to interchange into many different manufacturer's pump housing, the seals are identified by the pump model, not the motor. The term "Square Flange" is referred to the shape of the flange of the motor. *Some gaskets/O-rings are squared but will make a shape of a circle.

Hi Anthony, If you wanting to replace your motor then the proper replacement motor is the BN25 Century Replacement Motor If you go the route of replacing your motor you will also need a Tune Up Kit but we would need for you to send us a photo of your complete pump showing the basket and the plumbing ports to be able to suggest that tune up kit. The other option would be a completely new pump and we would suggest the PureLine PL1532 Pure Pro XL as a great replacement and the cost would actually be less than replacing the motor and tune-up kit. Hi Debbie, This is the correct replacement motor for the information you supplied. As far as the seal kit goes we will need your pump information... Could you give us your pump make and model information, common pump names would be Pentair Whisperflo, Pentair Challenger, Jandy Stealth, etc.. To supply this information click the reply link below, also if you could send a few photos those are always helpful as well. If you send photos then take a close up shot of the motor label as well as a wide shot of the complete pump to include the pipes going in and out of the pump. It looks to me like you have a Sta-Rite Dura Glas pump This motor is the proper replacement for your pump. If you go with a new pump and basket then I would suggest the 1.5 HP PureLine Prime, the plumbing ports on the PureLine are not in the exact same spot as your current pump so you will have a little re-plumbing. If you decide to just replace the motor then you will need this Sta-Rite Dura Glas Seal Kit Pre 1998 or this Sta-Rite Dura Glas Seal Kit 1998 and after. If you don't know if your pump is from before or after 1998 then we have this Video on How to Determine if your Sta-Rite Pump is Before or After 1998

Thank you. I ordered the motor and the kit with order #1070738. Now, I discovered that the Seal Plate was permanently glued to the old pump. So, I need a matching Seal Plate. My old one is a Pentair Ultra-Flow Pump Seal Plate 357143 V38-131. Do you have this model or a replacement seal plate and kit that matches this - and that will fit the pump that I ordered?
Yes we do carry your seal plate and you may view or purchase this here Ultra Flo Seal Plate V38-131 we do have this in stock.

Same exact issue as the gentleman above. Seems like electrolysis has permanently bound the lower steel pins in the seal plate to the aluminum base plate of the old motor housing. Wound up cracking the old seal plate trying to get it loose. My old pump and intake basket housing look identical to the images above, but the part numbers are slightly different. The seal plate you recommended appears to be correct, but I'd just like to verify.

Hi Kevin, it may be that the original contractor oversized the pump needed but that doesn't happen too often as they are licensed to calculate all variables needed. Or it may be that some equipment has been changed. Here is a guide that we put together called "How to Size a Pool Pump for Your In-Ground Pool" that will assist in calculating this.

Hello Tony. The Century Motors 1.0 HP Full Rate Motor model B2848 more closely adheres to the specification of the motor model F56AC20A01. Century 1.0 HP Square Flange 56Y Full Rate Motor - B2848 The Magnetek Century Motor model B2853 technically will fit (square flange) but the motor total horsepower is less than the F56AC20A01 which, in the long term, can be problematic. It is recommended that the motor shaft seal, seal plate gasket, and diffuser o-ring be replaced concurrent with the new motor. These parts are specific to the pump model. Please provide pump model information and a recommendation can be made.

Hello Mike. The Century Motors 1.0 HP Full Rate Motor model B2848 is the better replacement option for your Pentair Whisperflo Pool Pump. The total horsepower of the B2848 is 1.65 HP, matching that of the lineage 001513-255010s. Century 1.0 HP Square Flange 56Y Full Rate Motor - B2848 It is recommended that the motor shaft seal, seal plate gasket and diffuser o-ring be replaced concurrent with the new motor. I have a Pentair spa pump that has a century B2853 motor that has a short in it. Reading some of your answers causes me to wonder if the B2848 wouldn’t be a better motor, however I do not have any information about the pump rating other than what i see on the motor (just bought house, no existing files available). It is only used to circulate the spa and is roughly 10 years old.
Hello Stephen. The Spa Pump in the photo is a Pentair Whisperflo. Attached please find an exploded parts diagram for the Whisperflo. Pentair Whisperflo Pump The Century Motors B2853 is a 1.0 HP Up Rate Motor, THP 1.25 HP. The Century Motors B2854 is a 1.5 HP Up Rate Motor, THP 1.65HP. The 0.40 increase in THP may improve the motor lifespan - do not change the pump's impeller. The increase in THP will result in an increase in electricity consumption, 16.0 amps vs 11.4 amps @ 230V. The GOKIT32 contains the necessary parts to complete the motor change. GOKIT32 Either motor will serve the purpose.

i HAVE A PENTAIR Pentair 340038 SuperFlo High Performance Single Speed Pool Pump, 1 Horsepower, 115/230 Volt, 1 Phase THAT I AM TRYING TO REPLACE THE MOTOR ON, WILL THIS WORK? THEIR OTHER REPLACEMENT MOTOR IS A
355010S - BOTH ARE SQUARE FLANGE 230V.... ALSO NEED THE REPLACEMENT SEAL KIT.

Hello. The Pentair SuperFlo Pool Pump model 340038 was manufactured with a 1.0 HP motor with a Service factor (SF) of 1.25, for a total horsepower (THP) of 1.25 HP = Up Rate. The Century Motors 1.0 Up Rate Motor model B2853 is the direct replacement. The Century Motors 1.0 HP Full Rate motor model B2848 (3550105) is a compatible replacement with a THP of 1.65 HP. Technically the B2848 with a 0.4 HP increase is a replacement option. The B2848 will not increase water flow (unless the impeller is changed). The GOKIT78 contains the necessary parts to complete the motor replacement. GOKIT78

I have a Pentair Whisperflo manufactured in 2010 with a WFDS-24 1 HP motor that has failed and needs to be replaced. I don't think I need the dual speed motor since I rarely used the lower speed. Can you verify the correct replacement motor for this? My current motor does have a left hand screw that threads into the inside of the motor shaft that secures the impeller. Can you verify the motor choices? I do not think I need a Pentair brand motor, just one that fits.
Hello Tim. The Century 1.0 HP Square Flange 56Y Up Rate Motor - B2853 or the Century 1.0 HP Square Flange Up Rate EE Motor - B863SE would be compatible single-speed motor replacements for the Pentair Whisperflo WFDS-24. The Energy Efficient B863SE $15.00 cost differential is recouped in roughly 90 days, and operational savings are realized thereafter. The Tune Up Kit Pentair/Purex Whisperflo - GOKIT32 contains the seals and gaskets necessary to complete the motor change.
