I have a Pentair SM10-3 valve that has been leaking. I replaced the spider gasket and spring but it's still leaking. Before I replace the whole top should I try something else or just buy the top? Will this top assembly fit my valve body?
Reply
Hello Norm - I would recommend replacing the entire top assembly. This will correct you problem. The 4600-1102 is the correct top assembly for the SM10-3.

Will this replace the key and handle assembly for a SM10-AO and if so what is the Part number for the spider gasket?

Yes this Valve Top Assembly does work on the SM10-AO and here is the Spider Gasket

My current valve says "75 GPM" this new one says "60 GPM". If this is the correct part for SM-10-3 why is this different and will it slow my circulation down in the pool?

Hi Laurie, You have the O.E.M. valve, this is an aftermarket replacement that will fit the SM-10-3 valve. The Top Valve Assy, 1 1/2" - 270068 is the direct replacement

will PRAHER VALVE top p/n e-50-s1 fit & match Pentair valve ? waiting to order rightnow... thanks

Hi, Bob. This top assy can be used with selected Pentair valves. If you can provide us with the model number of the valve I can confirm if this assembly is compatible.

Hi, does this assembly replace a Pentair SM10-3 sand, 50 psi, 75 gpm top assy valve? The only other number I see is 27-1140. Your picture shows the same number of mounting screws (6) and all the valve position location match (rinse, filter, waste, etc), however my assembly does not have a "winterize" position.
I can provide a picture of my old assy if that helps.
Thanks!!

Hello Ken- The Top Assy., Valve 1 1/2" Black-with Label (e-50-s1b) part # 4600-1102 will be the correct part for your SM10-3.

Okay - Have the Pentair SM10-2D.E. From what you have posted it appears as though the replacement is labeled differently than what my current labels are. Here is the stupid question. If I want to operate with the new top, do I assume the labeling is correct and use it the way it is labeled or do I scribble it out and relabel it to match what is currently on the unit that I am using? Please advise. THX Mel

Hi, Melody. This Top Valve Assy - E50S1 will fit the SM10-2DE and the positions and labels are identical to the original.

I have a SM10-3 sand valve and have seen two part numbers (4600-1102 and 4600-0068) listed in the Q&A as replacements. If both are correct, what are the differences? Also, do these valves come with gaskets, washers and decals?
Reply
Hi, Evan. The Top Valve Assemblies - 4600-1102 is a generic option, the cover o-ring - 252 is not included and 4600-0068 is an OEM option with decals and cover o-ring. The Diverter Gasket - 271104 (OEM) or G-416 (Generic) will have to be purchased separately using either Top Valve Assemblies.

I also have the 27-1140 which states 50psi operating pressure with 75gmp flow. This part E-50-S1 shows 60gpm. Will this valve top restrict flow? IF there is a better valve top for the 27-1140, what is the o ring?

I bought the replacement valve assembly SM10-2 (261177). from you. I only need the valve as the handle was sticking badly and was getting DEA back into the pool. So I have removed it from your Assembly to use. I also bought the gasket 4600-1104 from you. (271104). My current valve and gasket are about 8 years old. Do I need to replace the gasket? If it looks OK? Can I just put the new valve in? Haw critical is the 401 lock tight?

Hi Ronald, if you are not leaking any water out of the waste port and the spider gasket seems to be in good condition then you should not need to replace it. However, if you are already there then maybe at least consider replacing it. Loctite or even RTV silicone are important to use as they hold the gasket in place when rotating the rotor within the valve.

I am using E-50-S1 top Assembly to replace the top assembly on my SM10-2D.E valve. The handle was badly sticking when I closed last year.
I also bought 4600-1104 the diverter gasket.
How critical is it to replace this gasket if it looks OK? As I hear it is tedious to scrap it out?
Lastly if I do replace it do I have to lub it?
Reply
Hi Ronald, if the spider gasket is in good condition then you do not necessarily need to replace it and you do not need to lubricate it either. Here is a general guide that we put together called "How to Replace a Spider Gasket on a Multiport Valve" that may also assist.

I have a Purex Triton SM10-3 SAND multi-port valve on my 1998 sand filter and it is getting very hard to operate. It is working and not leaking but has gotten very hard to switch from filter to backwash, etc. I see the Pentair 270068 top assembly should fit (right?) but the spider and O ring are not included so my question is would a new spider gasket make it easier to turn? Or is the whole top assembly needed to make it easier to turn?
Reply
Hi Nexsen, yes the most common reason for a multiport valve to have difficulty turning is the spider gasket. However, if it getting older then it also a good idea to consider replacing that entire top valve assembly which you have correctly cross-referenced as well. For the SM10-3 multiport valve with sand filter, the Pentair top assembly 270068 is correct.

Thanks. In case it helps someone else I replaced the top assembly and at first installed the star gasket without gluing it until I could get the right kind of adhesive (3M 4799). I thought it might leak a "little" unglued but it lost almost 10,000 gallons overnight! That's essentially like leaving it in backwash since my pump runs at 29,000 gallons per day. I am AMAZED and still don't see how that could be possible but it did happen. After gluing it does not leak at all.
