I currently have a 1.5 hp Hayward pump with 1.5" ports. Can I up grade to a pump with 2" ports with causing an issue with the rest of the plumbing.
Reply
Hi, Robert. Yes, you can install a pump with 2" ports without causing an issue.

I have a 1.5 hp Hayward northstar, will this pump be a good replacement for my original?
Reply
Hi Anthony, Yes this 1.4 HP Variable Speed would be a great replacement for your 1.5 HP Northstar. You will save a ton your operational costs by going to a variable speed.
Reply
Do you guys sell extended warranties? If I install it myself does that do anything to the 2 year warranty?
Reply
Hi, Anthony. We do not offer any extended warranties. If the pump is self installed, you're still eligible for the full manufacturer warranty.

I have the Hayward aqua logic automation system the board is rev s / rev2.85 . Can I hook this pump up to my system? And if so how do I wire it, my Northstar has 4 wire hook up and the vsp has 3 wire.
Reply
Yes you can hook this up to your Hayward Aqua Logic however all of the programmings will be done on the controller on the pump controller. So the AquaLogic would power the pump on and off and then what you have programmed on the pump controller would take over from a programming standpoint.

I am converting to a salt water pool. Is this pump compatible and does salt water void the warrenty?
Reply
This pump is saltwater compatible and salt applications do not void the warranty.

My pool is only 10,000 gallons. Is this pump going to be overpowering? The current pump is 3/4 horse single speed but I want a variable so I can run it longer. The filter is a Hayward Pro Series High Rate Sand Filter. Specs are 20 GPM/Ft sq. filtration rate and 62GPM design filtration and backwash rate.
Reply
Hi Richard, This pump would not be overkill, most of the time you will be running it at pretty low speed that is where the energy savings comes from. However, you will have the ability to really ramp up the HP for things like vacuuming or if you ever get into demanding water conditions like an algae bloom and need to increase your filtration.

The trap basket shape looks like a Hayward Super II - is it?
Reply
Hi William, this pump is the Waterway Power Defender series pool pump but if you are referring to yours, could you send us a few photos of your pump? If so then please take a wide shot of the complete pump to include the pipes going in and out of the pump. To supply photos simply click the reply link below and upload your photos. Once we get those photos we can make the proper recommendation for your seal kit.

Let me rephrase my question. Can a Hayward Super II pump basket be used to replace the pump basket of the PD-140?
Reply
The baskets are similar with different dimensions. The Waterway Power Defender 140 Variable Speed Pool Pump 1.4 HP 115V/230V - PD-140 will use the Basket w/ Extension - 319-1430B shown here http://www.inyopools.com/Products/07501352049994.htm

I have a SP2605X7 super pump 3/4hp (w/ dead motor) in 20k gallon pool with Hayward S244T filter. I'm trying to decide between motor replacement and complete pump replacement with a variable speed pump (perhaps PD-140?) to save energy.
14 PSI on filter during normal ops. I also have booster pump for polaris vacuum. Not sure of my TDH but my pump is about at water height, 1.5" pvc plumbing. See attached image for pool image showing pump location, skimmer/outlet locations, and plumbing. Thanks!
Hi Michael, I would lean towards a Variable Speed Motor replacement for a few reasons. First I will layout the items you would need for a motor replacement... You will need this 1.65 HP Century Variable Speed Replacement Motor this Hayward Super Pump Seal Kit and this Hayward Super Pump 1.5 HP Impeller The reason I would suggest this route is that I like the 1.65 HP Century Motor a little better than the 1.4 HP US Motor on this pump. You will have no re-plumbing if you just replace your motor. You will have the ability to ramp your HP up a little higher (1.65 vs. 1.4) if needed and the cost is less.
Reply
Now that you have suggested a round flange motor, I’m all confused. The dead motor seems to be square flange (see attached picture). Can you help me decipher my pump model (model numbers wore off) and motor replacement needs? Attached are pictures of my pump and dead motor. Thanks! One more factor to consider is that I'm pretty sure I'm on a 115 V wiring setup.
Hi Michael, The Super Pump is a tricky one as it looks like it is a square flange motor but it is actually a round flange motor. There is a motor mounting plate on the motor which is removed and once removed it reveals the round flange motor. You can see this better by looking at this Hayward Super Pump Parts Diagram take a look at key #14 (motor mounting plate) which is removed from key #22 (the motor). See my last reply in regards to 115V and 230V.
Reply
Unfortunately, if 230 Volts were supplied to the motor while it was set to 115V, yes, it most likely fried the motor.
Reply
Thanks for the prompt response. One other factor to consider: I am currently wired for 115 volts (at least i think I am). Will this Century replacement motor work for a 115V circuit, or will it require 230V line to be run?
Reply
Hi Michael, If you do want to go 115V then you would need to go with the Waterway 1.4 HP Complete Variable Speed Pump which is still a great pump. If you go with the Century Motor then you will need to run a 230V line.
Reply
So I made a pretty big mistake by thinking I had a 110 volt hookup when it was actually a 220v hookup (I have since confirmed this to be the case). I am pretty sure I damaged the unit, as it smoked and now longer powers on when correctly connected to power. Are the electronics on this motors something that is able to be repaired or replaced without replacing the entire pump motor? Should I replace the Motor on the PD-140? Or go the route of the super pump conversion mentioned above in thread?

Is this pump suitable for a in-ground pool?
Reply
Hi Alberto, so there are a few variables to consider when sizing an inground pool pump. Here is a guide that we put together called "How to Size a Pool Pump for Your In-Ground Pool" that should help with that.

This pump appears to come with unions for 2" plumbing. Does it come with anything for 1.5" plumbing? If not do you sell unions that can be fit to 1.5"?
Reply
Hi Anthony, unfortunately, we do not carry unions for this pump for 1.5-inch plumbing however you can use reducer bushings on the unions for 1.5 inches.

What pumps do you recommend as a replacement to a 1.5 single speed Stayrite pump? Its housing has a pin hole leak. It is a 1.5 HP single speed motor/110 volts /1.5” pipe. Kidney shaped pool with a small 3 jet spa in one end. 2 skimmers – 1 in the pool & 1 in the spa w/ a cartridge filter underneath (suction side.) A Hayward pool cleaner runs from the pool suction side skimmer. 3 manual suction and return valves control water to/from the pump. Est 12 to 20,000 gallons of pool water.
Hi John, Thanks for your photos those are helpful! Based on what you have explained I would suggest this 1.4 HP Variable Speed Pump. This is one of only a few variable speed pumps that can be wired 115V. The plumbing ports on this pump are not in the exact same location as your current pump so you will have a little re-plumbing. Also the ports on this pump are 2" so you will use a 1.5" x 2" bushing to go from 1.5" plumbing up to the 2" ports. You will save a ton of money on your operational costs by going to variable speed.

Can this pump replace a Jandy Stealth Pro 1.5 that has a 2.5hp motor?

Hello, I have a Pentair Dynamo 1.5 HP that just went out and our pool is above ground 24'or 26'. That pump raised our electric bill so much. Looking for something to help with that. I read where I would have to get BUSHING, REDUCING 2 x 1-1/2" if this will work for me. Also, we live in Indiana would you recommend we unhook and take in or just drain water and leave outside? Thanks!

Hi, Zebbie. This model would not be recommended for your application. The Power Defender Variable Speed, Dual Voltage, 1.40 HP for Above Ground Pools - PD-140ABG is the recommend pump.

Thanks. I thought this was the same as this...Waterway Power Defender 140 Dual Voltage Variable Speed Above Ground Pool Pump 1.40HP 115/230V | PD-140ABG. But I now can tell by the last initials. 140 ABG for above ground.

Zebbie, Correct, they're two different models.

Im in the market to replace my hayward 1.5 hp single stage motor (13000 gal inground pool) with the waterway power defender my hayward pool pump has 2" piping with the pictures supplied it should be an easy and good replacement for what i have now?
Hi Michael, as far as the Waterway Defender variable speed pool pump a closer match will be the 2.7 HP variable speed model. Also, the suction port will be lower by about 3/4 of an inch and the discharge port will be forward by about half of an inch, however, the unions on the Defender do assist with making installation a bit easier. Please be advised that this pump is 230 volt only.

Is Waterway Power Defender 140 Variable Speed Pool Pump 1.4 HP 115V/230V - PD-140 a good replacement for a Jacuzzi Magnum 3/4hp pump?

Yes, the PD-140 would be a good replacement option for the 3/4HP Jacuzzi Magnum pump. It is not a drop-in replacement. Some minor plumbing would be required.

Hi Kevin, Yes this Waterway pump would fit the bill for all the items you listed in your post and would be the pump we would recommend.

I'm trying to replace a 2 HP Pentair Challenger. Would this pump be a fit?
Hi MG, If you feel as you had more than enough power with your 2 HP pump then this would be a good fit. If you felt that the 2 HP was on the edge of its capabilities then you may want to consider this same pump but in the 2.7 HP Version which can found through this link here 2.7 HP Waterway Variable Speed Pool Pump.

My pool is really small (~5000 gallons) and the pump is only 40 feet from the farthest discharge, so I think it should be ok. Is it drop in capable or will I have to make plumbing adjustments. Thanks for the help.
Reply
Hi MG, Thanks for the information! I would say that the PD-140 would be the pump for you based on that information. This pump does come with a riser kit so when used with the riser kit include, then it will match right up to the ports of your Whisperflo Pump. Here is a link which shows how the Waterway Bases / Risers Work.

Will this pump work for my 24' 15,000 gal above ground pool

Hi Jim, Yes this would be a good choice for a 24' 15,000 gal above-ground pool. We would suggest hard plumbing this pump instead of using hoses. Also this pump does not come with a cord and is designed to be hardwired.

I am looking to replace our Raypak Variable Speed 1.65 HP Pump. Would this be a suitable replacement? We have a 14,000 gallon pool.
Reply
Hello Mandy. The Waterway Power Defender 140 VS Pool Pump would be a suitable replacement for the Raypak VS 1.65 HP Pool Pump. The slight drop in horsepower is negligible unless you are using solar panels to heat the pool and their height above ground level is in excess of a single story.

We need to replace our 1 H.P. Centurian pool pump. Our pool is approximately 13,000 gals. We also have solar panels on a second story roof. The plumbing is currently 1 1/2". The power supply is 230 volt.

I have a Pentair Whisperflow 2.0 HP model WF-28 NO 011774 is this really going to just drop into the same space? Will I need new pipe fittings etc.?
Hello Shylia. According to Waterway, The Waterway Power Defender 140 Variable Speed Pool Pump is an easy replacement for the Pentair WhisperFlo Pool Pump. The Waterway Power Defender comes with multiple adjustable bases to facilitate the plumbing transition. Depending upon how the current pump is plumbed, there may be some pipe and pipe fitting changes necessary for installation. The Waterway Power Defender model 140 is a 1.4 HP pool pump. Depending on the characteristics of your pool (fountains, spa with spillover, pool solar panels, etc) you may wish to consider the Waterway Power Defender model 270 (2.7HP) as a replacement for the WhisperFlo 2.0 HP. Hello,
I need to replace my hayward pump sp3210eez1br, will this pump work? I am in California..
Hello Danny. The published Performance Data for the Hayward TriStar model SP3210Z1BER indicates a flow rate of 105 gallons per minute (GPM) at 50 Feet of Head. The Waterway Power Defender Variable Speed PD-140 has a flow rate of approx 63 GPM at 50 Feet of Head. The differentiation in flow rates may result in extended pump run times, and/or circulation & filtration challenges. The Hayward TriStar Variable Speed Pump model W3SP3202VSP Performance Data more closely resembles the single-speed TriStar SP3210Z1BER and would be a better direct replacement.
