When should I change the sand in my filter?
Reply
You should change the sand in your filter every 5-7 years. You can generally tell that it is time if your pool water is not as clear as it normally is or when you notice the interval between backwashes is shorter. You can use > this guide to walk you through it.

Is pea gravel necessary or could you use all sand?

Hello Wardell, The sand filter does not require Pea Gravel but it does help with filtration and removing the larger debris in the pool.

label on the TR60 say 250pounds of sand . Here I see 325lbs. Which one is correct.
What will be the reasons why the pool water jet are throwing a lot of air? When I open the filter air release valve the bubbles star disappearing but I close the valve air come out again. Thanks,

Hi Ed, If the label on your filter states 250 lbs of sand then I will go by that. You have an air leak, I would recommend replacing the o-rings on your pump.

Is the sand purchased separately from the filter?
Reply
Hello. Yes the sand is purchased separately. The manufacturer's recommendation is No. 20 Silica Sand. The Pentair Triton 2 TR-60 uses 7 50 lb bags of sand - 325 lbs total. You can also purchase a Sand Alternative. Thank you.

I have a TR 60 Filter that had broken laterals, sand in the pool, I cleaned the filter and replaced the laterals then refilled with sand 325 # set the valve and started the pump. My pool got very cloudy, less tan 12 inch visability. I took the top off the filter and half of the sand was gone. I rechecked the laterals all were good. attempted again with same results. What could be causing this?

Hi David, I would first start off by reading this Article on Getting Sand Back in Your Pool you may also want to check to make sure you didn't plumb the valve backwards, for example plumbing your inlet line into the outlet port on the valve and plumbing your outlet line into the inlet port of the valve.

On the other filters listed on this site above this one, they list the size of the filter plumbing connections. But for this Triton II TR60 Side Mount 24 Inch Tank I can't seem to find that anywhere. Are the connections for this filter 1 and 1/2 inch or are they 2 inch?
Reply
The filter plumbing connections for a sand filter would be based on the valve not the filter tank. You would need to order 261173 for 1.5" and 261055 for 2".

I have a Purex Triton FNS Plus with a white dot on the chart that lists the models under the model marked FNSP 60. I'm new to pool ownership. It came with the house. The housing on this unit is leaking (the bottom half). Trying to decide if that's normal in a fiberglas filter and if I should replace the housing or think about a new filter. I'm guessing the filter may be 15 years old. If we should replace, what do I look for when spec'ing a new one?
Reply
Hello, John. That is not normal for it to leak. You may replace the Tank Bottom Assembly 60 Sq Ft Fns Plus (170018). When the filter's are at the10+ year mark, the manufacturer's best recommend to replace the entire filter. The filter may be replaced with the FNS Plus 60 Sq Ft Filter w/o Valve - 180009. You may use the Pentair FNS Plus D.E. Filter Parts Diagram as a guide for other replacement parts, it also includes a listing of the multi-port or push-pull valves available for the filter. You may also find our How To Guides helpful.
