What is Service Factor?
Reply
Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
Reply
We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
Reply
A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

Hi, The A.O. Smith 3/4 HP, 56Y Frame, Up-Rate Motor (B852, B2852) will fit a Pentair Challenger Pump. You would also need to confirm that this motor is ok to use with your current Impeller.

My old pool label reads A.O.Smith CAT serial CA04-08 Part 7-186236-20 Type CX FR:P56Y, HP---, SF---, PH 1, HZ 60, RPM 3450, Volts 230/115, AMPS 5.4/10.8, Time: CONT, ENCL: DP, FORM: KJM, CODE: N, AMB: 40. It seems like this pump will replace my old one but I wanted to make sure before I purchased this.

How many capacitors does the AO Smith 3\4 hp B852, B2852 have? Know about the run capacitor on top, but is there a start capacitor in the back of the motor under the electrical cover also? Got a humming, non starting pump motor to repair, any help appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Bob, The B852 motor only has a run capacitor and no start switch. The only thing could be the motor windings.

Do you have anything for corrosion prevention for the motor. Living on the Gulf of Mexico, the salt even corrodes glass!

Unfortunately, there is nothing we carry to prevent corrosion on the motor. I would recommend a Protective Pool Motor Cover - R221016 to keep the elements off of your motor as much as possible as well as not allowing runoff rainwater from the roof to fall directly on it.

Yes, the hump on the motor is the capacitor housing, going by your pictures; it should not interfere with your install. There is no need for extra tools, following the instruction in this guide and you shouldn't have a problem: How To Replace the Motor on Your Pool Pump.
