How do I drain / winterize the heat pump?
Reply
Turn off the power supply. Disconnect the unions on the water inlet and discharge lines. Tilt the heat pump slightly toward the fittings to insure all the water in the heat exchanger has drained out.

In reference to a question posed about the 21404t, I asked about the operation in temps below 60°. What are the differences in this unit, and what are the low ambient temperature tolerances for the 21404tc, rather than the 21404t?
Reply
Hello, this heat pump is designed so that it can work well in colder climates, whereas the other heat pump would not work well.
Reply
water coming out of the filter should go into the heat pump and out to the pool-correct?
Reply
The arrangement of pool system components other than as illustrated previously and in the following diagrams can affect the operation of the heat pump’s water pressure switch. Location of the heat pump above or below the elevation of the pool water surface can also affect the operation of the switch. In general, the pressure switch can be adjusted to accommodate this effect if the heat pump water connections are no more than six (6) feet [1,8 m] below the pool water surface or no more than fifteen (15) feet [4,6 m] above it. See instructions for pressure switch adjustment in the heat pump start up the section of this manual. If the heat pump is installed outside of this range, an external pressure switch may need to be installed in the plumbing upstream of the heat pump. Does this have to work in conjunction with your regular pool pump or does it replace it?
Reply
Hello- The Hayward Heat Pro Heat Pump 140,000 BTU (Low Ambient) HP21404TC will need a pool pump to operate. This is simply an electric heater.
Reply
Looking at the instructions it would appear that a 1/3 lb check value will need to be purchased separately? What about the bypass values?
Reply
Hi. The valves to make a manual bypass will have to be purchased separately also. See these links Check Valve, Ball Valve.
Reply
Are both the check valve and ball valve needed? What is the purpose of them?
Reply
Hi Krishen, Check valves are typically installed when pool owners have both a salt system/chlorinator and a heater. The check valve is needed to prevent the high chlorine concentration from backing into the heat pump.
Reply
Hi - we don't have salt system/chlorinator system. So I won't need the check valve....correct? What about the ball valve?
Reply
Correct if you do not have pieces of equipment that release corrosive chemicals into the plumbing after the unit then you would not need a check valve. If you will need to bypass the water flow through the unit in the future then you would want to install ball or diverter valves at the unit to redirect water flow.
Reply
Hello - We don't have a a salt system/chlorinator, so the check valve won't be needed..correct? What about the ball valve.
Reply
Hi, Krishen. A check valve will be required if you also have any type of automatic chlorine distribution system.
Reply
Does the heat pump come all you need to hook up.
Reply
Hello, The heat pump comes with 2" unions so that you can plumb it in. You will need a licensed electrician to connect it to you 240v/50 amp source.
Reply
If I will need to bypass the water flow through the unit in the future and want to install a ball or diverter valve at the unit to redirect water flow what would you suggest?
Reply
Hi, Krishen. Using Ball Valves will be the most economical option for installing a manual bypass. See page 15 of the Hayward HeatPro HP21404T Owners Manual.

Hello - started using this product this week. We changed the liner and added water which was about 54 degrees in a 17x36feet in-ground pool.
The weather has been between 65-82 degrees the past few days and pump has been running 8-10hrs for about 3 days. I am noticing that
after a few hours the temperature starts to drop 8-10 degrees from the pump after a few hours (7-8hrs) of running it. Is this normal?
Reply
Kris, It sounds like you are experiencing heat loss. It is recommended to use a solar blanket to help retain the heat especially at night.

What is the difference between the HP21404T and the HP21404C? Dont the both operate to an ambient temperature of 40 degrees?
Reply
The HP21404TC will operate at temperatures as low as 40F. This is useful especially in regions that experience cooler ambient temperatures. The standard version can only operate at temperatures of 50F and above.
Reply
Hello, do you have a list of the C.O.P s for this and your other heat pumps? I am trying to get a rebate from my local electric company and they want over a 6.
Thanks,

I live in Florida and I'm looking for a combo unit that I can use for my AC as well as a pool heater. Do you have these units available?
Reply
Hi, Marlon. Unfortunately, we do not have such a unit. Heat Pump will release cool air as it heats your pool which some customers feed into their garage to keep that area cool.
Reply
I live in Sarasota with a southern exposure on a caged pool that gets sun most of the day. Which unit would be best? Do I really need the low ambiet or could I go with the less expensive unit?
Reply
Good day, no for FL we would not recommend using a low ambient. Unless you truly want to enter the pool when it is in the 40's. The standard Hayward Heat Pro Heat Pump 140,000 BTU would do just fine.
Reply
If electricity costs are $0.35 per kilowatt how much would it cost per month running a 24 hours. It's a large condo pool and we'd only have to run it for about 6 months 30th
Reply
Hi Jim, we have a blog posting regarding the costs associated with running a pool heater/heat pump. How Much Does it Cost to Run My Pool Heater?
Reply
I already have the 21404T, which I bought 5 years ago. I live in Texas, where it can get chilly in early and late summer months. At those times, I keep the heat pump running 24/7 to maintain the warm (upper 80's) water temps that I like. I close the pool between Nov and Mar, as air temps can get below 50 and swimming sucks when ambient air is that cold.
Hayward didn't offer this low-ambient model in 2014. Is it any more efficient, would it save $$ for usage pattern I describe above?
Reply
Good Morning- The main advantage to the Hayward HeatPro Heat Pump 140,000 BTU (Low Ambient) is its ability to operate when outside temperatures are lower than 50 degrees. You might see some more energy efficiency, but no significant difference.
Reply
We just bought a new unit and its stuck in Loc mode which i think is a lockout mode. There is nothing in the manual to get it out of this mode. any ideas?
Reply
Hi Chris. Press and hold ‘Set/Select’ button until ‘Loc’ appears. Release the ‘Set/Select’ button. Press up arrow until 50 appears. This unlocks the set up menu.

Looking for a pool heater that is efficient and responsive as we aren't always present at this home. Ideally, we could engage the unit remotely to heat the pool before we arrive.
Reply
Hello, This would be a good unit to heat up your pool, however, you would not be able to turn it on before you arrive. You would need to look into an automation system for your pool for remote capabilities. If you wanted to know more about automation systems with remote capabilities, please email our technical support at upload@inyopools.com

I need to install this unit in a shaded porch in Phoenix. There is ample air circulation but not direct sunshine. Would this work for a pool used all year long that has a pool cover for cold months ?
Reply
Hi. Per the manufacturer, the unit must not be installed under a porch. Any side of the unit should be located at least 24 inches from a wall or from any other obstruction.

I have a 50X24 in-ground pool in Central Iowa. I teach swimming lessons and need my pool water to be warmer for a longer season. I currently have the Pentair Ultratemp 120 but it isn't enough. I'd like 86+ degree water temps in May/June and September if possible. We use our auto-cover at night. Would this Hayward pump be a good addition to reach my goal and will it work sufficiently along with the Pentair unit? I am new to this and welcome any education and advice you can give. Thank you!
My pool is in Rhode Island. I'm considering this heater to get some extra swimming days on the shoulder seasons and cool summer days when even if the air temp is 70, the pool wont warm up.
Is this unit still good fit for heating the water on warmer days when the air temp is 60s-70s?
Reply
Hi Paul, Yes this heat pump would work great for what you have explained (i.e. extending the pool season in the spring and late summer). Yes, this unit will heat on warmer days when the air temp is in the 60s-70s.

My pool pump pvc piping is all 1 1/2ā and the two black compression pieces that came with the pump are 2ā. Is this a problem if I just use a reducer and will it affect flow adversely? If so, would it be beneficial to install a flow control/meter of some sort?
Thank you.

Is it OK to run the heater when the pool needs a "shock"? -- say, 10-15 ppm?
Thanks again!
Reply
Hi Ron, Ideally if you had a bypass valve plumbed in so you could have the water bypass the heat pump when you have really high chlorine levels that would be best for the heat exchanger on your heat pump. If you cannot bypass the heat pump during shocking its not the end of the world but just try to limit it as much as possible.
Reply
Thanks, I did install a bypass, so will do. More questions (great CS here!) - When I engage the heater flow, my pressure goes up about 3-4 PSI (not sure how accurate my gauge is, but it goes from about 15 to about 20 PSI).. is this normal for these heat pumps?
Reply
Hi Ronald, Normally you should see less than a 5 PSI rise when the heat pump turns on, so you should be good. Thanks for the kind words!

Me again. Do I have to turn the heater off (as opposed to the "FLO" code) each time I shut off the pump? I'm assuming yes... Is there some interface that would shut off the heater when the pump shuts off?
Thanks again!
Reply
Hello, Here is a copy of the manual on how to correct that fault code. http://images.inyopools.com/cloud/documents/heatpro-hp21404t-owners-manual.pdf
Reply
Final question. I would like to control my pump/heater via remote (Alexa). Is it OK to leave the HeatPro in the on position at all times (and, of course, receive the "FLO" indication when the pump shuts off)?
Reply
Yes, you can leave the heat pump in the "on" setting as it will not work anyways unless there is adequate water flow through it.

We live in Southern NH and have a 20 x 40 in-ground pool. Is this product capable of heating this pool? And in our climate is it recommended a heat pump or a heater?

From what I can tell, the only difference between this unit and the HP21404T is that this has a lower ambient temperature minimum. What is the ambient temperature minimum of the HP21404T? I'm curious if the extra money extends the season days, weeks, or months in New England.
Reply
Aside from a lower minimum ambient temperature, are there any differences between this and the HP21404T? i.e. electricity usage, noise, size...
Reply
Hi. The lower operating temperature is the only difference.

This Heat Pump is awesome, couldn't be happier with the purchase!
Another question - can I put the heat pump in the on position and control it with the circuit breaker? - I'm only using the pool feature (no spa). Would be much more convenient than going outside each time to turn the heat pump on; after turning the pump on (which I control via Smart Home).
Thanks again!
Reply
Hello,This heat pump would have to run on its own breaker.

can I use my hayward HP21404T that i use for heating my pool, be used to cool a 50 squere meter room next to the pool area. Please ilustrate.
Reply
Albert, no, this unit is only designed to heat the pool. We are unaware of any modifications that would allow the system to cool.
Reply
How long is the electrical cord? Iām getting the electrical work done and concrete slab ready before I order.
Reply
Hi, Cynthia. This unit does not include a power cord, the unit will have to be hard wired. That means you will have to run the electrical cable from the breaker to the unit.

I live in San Antonio TX. I want to install the Hayward HP2140T or TC. The heater heats either my pool and spa or just my spa. If we want to heat just the spa in the winter occasionly should I get the Low Ambient?
Reply
Yes, the Low Ambient will help the heating of the spa in the winter.
Reply
I just installed a solar PV system. I want to install a Hayward Heatpro heat pump in series with an existing natural gas heater to heat my pool/spa Should the HeatPro come before or after the Nat Gas heater? I plan on installing a bypass system for the heaters, too.
Reply
Hi, Randy. The units will have to be plumbed parallel with the proper clearance in order to ensure proper installation.

Can the heat pump heat 430 sq feet pool to 95F in 55F ambient temp. If not what would be the maximum temperature it can heat it to roughly. Assumes almost no wind and cover.
Reply
Dariusz, yes the HeatPro Heat Pump 140,000 BTU (Low Ambient) - HP21404TC would be more than sufficient to heat your 430 ft² pool to a desired temperature of 95 degrees.
Reply
My Hayward Heat Pro won't turn on. Power is getting to it because the screen lights up. When I turn it on, it cycles through it's stuff then ends with the code 'PO'. It was just on 3 days ago. It's less than a year old.
