How do I backwash my Hayward Vertical Grid DE filter?
Reply
When the filter pressure rises 8-10 PSI over the clean starting pressure, the filter must be backwashed. Turn off the pool pump. Rotate the multiport valve to backwash position or slide the slide valve up. When the pump is turned on, the dirty DE and water will flow out to waste. Once the water runs clear, turn off the pump. With a slide valve, push the handle down and start the pump. Once the pump is primed, add the required DE. If using a multiport valve, rotate the handle to rinse. Turn on the pump and let water flow for 20-30 seconds, cleaning out the plumbing lines. Turn off the pump and rotate the valve back to filter. Turn on the pump and once primed add required DE.

I am getting DE back into my pool after I backwash, do you know why?
Reply
The main reason is that one or more of your grids are torn and DE is passing through. Please remove all the grids and thoroughly inspect each for rips or cracks in the plastic structure. Also check the manifold ( the piece the grids fit into ) for cracks in the plastic. If there is nothing wrong with either of those, one other possibility is that the spider gasket in the multi-port valve may be torn and not sealing correctly.

I have a Hayward Micro Clear model DE 4800 - will this 4820 model replace it?
Reply
Yes the Hayward DE4820 Pro Grid DE Filter is the direct replacement for the Hayward Micro Clear model DE 4800.

I have an 18x36 rectangle inground 3ft to 8ft deep, I currently have a DE filter Nautilus PacFab NS36, is this a good replacement or overkill? My pump is a 1.5hp superpump with 1.5" plumbing.

Based on the model pump and surface area of your pool, this filter is a good recommendation for your application.

I have a DE4800 and understand that the 4820 is the replacement. Will my multiport valve which fits the DE4800 fit onto the 4820? Can any of my Grids from the DE-4800 be used in the 4820 (now I would have a complete spare bundle)??
What other components might be interchangeable or useable?

What else do I need to buy to install the Hayward DE4820 ProGrid 48 Square-Foot Vertical Grid DE Pool Filter. Please be specific.

Hi, If you're installing a D.E. filter for the first time you will need the following: D.E. Filter, Multiport or Slide Valve, D.E. Powder, D.E. Measuing Scoop, Backwash Hose.

I have a de4800 and need a new top lid for it. Where can I get one. Nobody seems to carry it anymore.

Hi, Unfortunately, the manufacturer no longer make the Top for the DE4800 filters, so you will have to replace the entire filter. The DE4820 will be a suitable replacement.

We currently have a Hayward Perflex EC75A would the Pro Grid 4820 be a suitable upgrade for this size DE filter. Also I assume we will need to purchase a multiport valve as well, is this correct?
Reply
Hi Karen, Yes the DE4820 would be the appropriate upgrade for an EC75A and you would need this Multiport Valve I like the DE4820 Pro Grid Filter over the Perflex EC75A because when you replace the grids on the Pro Grid they are about $125 where replacing all the fingers on the Perflex can be in the neighborhood of $575

Can I run two filters in parallel adding the 4820 with my 4800
I want to by the pentair 1.5 variable speed motor to run the system
Will this work

Hi Mark, The DE4820 is a direct replacement for the DE4800.You can install the two filters parallel, however, you will need to install a diverter valve where the filter tee off so that you'll be able backwash the filters separately.

IVE POURED SOME DE DIRECTLY INTO THE POOL RATHER THAN THE SKIMER
I POURED THE OTHER HALF INTO SKIMMER IS ALL OK?
Reply
Dominic, If you brush the product towards the main drain, the filter should be able to remove it from the pool.

I currently have a mirco-clear DE6000 that just let go. Will the De4820 be a suitable replacement? My pool is a 18 by 36 rectangle. Also, is the size similar or do I need to adjust the pipes coming out of the ground?
Reply
Hello, Based on the dimensions and assumed depth of your pool, the Hayward Pro Grid DE Filter 48 Sq Ft w/o Valve will accommodate your size pool. The valve size should be the same, but the height may be different. There is a possibility you would need to do some minor replumbing of your existing piping.

Hello.
Would like to obtain a replacement hold down ring for the filter shell, which holds the top of the filter shell to the bottom. Can you provide me a part number for the Hayward model DE4800 Serial 330L30?

Hi June, Thanks so much for the nice compliment! The DE4820 would work fine for your 2 HP pump but if your pocketbook can afford it I would suggest the Hayward DE6020 60 Sq. Ft. filter as it has a larger filtering capacity. The larger filter capacity means more time between cleaning your DE grids, also the larger filter puts less stress on your pump allowing for a longer life on your pump.

I can find replacement DE 4800 assemblies online for the same price as the 4820. I understand they're interchangeable but is there any reason I'd want to get a 4820 rather than a 4800?

We have always used this Hayward 48 Sq. Ft. DE Grid Cluster for both the DE4800 and the DE4820 and we have never had any issues.

I have a 22x41 x 52" deep Doughboy above ground pool. It is recessed and has a deck surrounding the entire top and all sides are enclosed.
Will the model DE4820 filter work on my pool. I have a new Hayward 1.5 hp matrix pump and am using a Hayward sand filter currently. Not getting great filtering due to no main drain and surrounding trees with polin, dust and other airborne dirt. Have to Floc every 3 weeks. I figure i have roughly 30,000 gallons. Looking forward to your suggestions

Hi Jerry, I believe you posted an earlier question about the Perflex EC50AC and I do like this Pro Grid Filter better than the EC50AC for a few reasons. The first reason is that the DE grids on the DE4820 are much less expensive to replace at approximately $125 for the Pack of 8 DE Grids vs. roughly $350 for the Perflex Replacement DE Fingers. Second... the DE4820 gives you about twice the filtering capacity as the EC50AC. If you go with the DE4820 you will also need this Hayward DE4820 Pro Grid Backwash Valve.

Hello,
I would like to get a Hayward DE4820 to replace an FNS Plus. My FNS plus makes me itch like crazy because it has become bare fiberglass. Will the Hayward do the same thing? If I buy the hayward 6 way multi valve with it, will I need Bulkhead fittings to purchase as well? Will the Hayward bolt up to my current Pentair Multi valve setup I am using for the FNS Plus?
Reply
Hi, Les. This filter is made of a glass-reinforced copolymer which will not be as bad as the FNS Plus. You will not have to purchase additional bulkheads. It will not connect to your existing Pentair MPV.

i have a Hayward DE 4820 30x 23 which filter grids do i need to replace my old worn ones with?

The replacement grid pack for the model Hayward DE4820 is part number FG1004PACK and the entire grid assembly is part number 4810-65A. Those dimensions do not match those grids so I would advise you to first confirm the model and if you can view the parts diagram by clicking here to confirm as well.

Ok I will check as soon as the weather warms up and ferify what is in there before I order the wrong part! Thanks for the quick reply

Thanks for any assistance.
Any sales on last years models?

Hi, Noel. This DE4820 model filter is a good replacement for an EC65 or EC75 filter. The DE4820 model requires a Multiport or Slide valve.

my pool is 20x40. 36000 gallons. Will the 4820 do the trick?
Reply
Hello - yes, the Hayward ProGrid DE4820 has plenty of capacity to adequately filter your water. But it never hurts to oversize the filter; because the larger you go, the longer you can go between backwashes.

What size Pool filter Motor should I get if I have this DE4820 inground pool filter? the 1HP or the 1.5 HP. Mine needs to be replaced and I have a 1HP now but I upgraded the DE filter from the 3420 in the beginning for the season. I also have a Hayward electric pool heat pump.

Hi Jenn, Yes this would be a great replacement for your Nautilus NS 48 Filter. You will have a little re-plumbing when installing this filter but nothing major.

I have a Hayward DE-4800, that has a small leak at the bottom half of the filter bowl . Would the DE-4820 be 1 for 1 replacement? Can I just purchase the bottom section of the DE-4820?

Hi James, unfortunately, the bottom body of the Hayward Micro Clear D.E. filter is no longer available with no listed replacement. You might be able to locate a used one or maybe consider replacing the entire filter with a Waterway Crystal Water 48 sqft D.E. Pool Filter model 570-0048-07.

Do you sell the grid kit? (7/1 grids including the holder so I can just drop it in the filter)

I presently have a sta-rite system 2 Modular DE, model number PLDE48 that has developed a leak. Would this DE filter be an appropriate replacement? I live in Florida so the filter runs year round. Thank you.

Yes, the Hayward Pro-Grid DE Filter 48 Sq Ft w/o Valve - W3DE4820 is a great choice for a replacement filter. It has DE Grids internally vs the Modular DE Filter. You will need to order a Two-Position Slide Valve - SP0410X502S 25831-004-000 or Vari-Flo MPV D.E. 2" FPT - SP0715XR50 for the installation with the ProGrid 48.
