How do I backwash my Hayward Vertical Grid DE filter?
Reply
When the filter pressure rises 8-10 PSI over the clean starting pressure, the filter must be backwashed. Turn off the pool pump. Rotate the multiport valve to backwash position or slide the slide valve up. When the pump is turned on, the dirty DE and water will flow out to waste. Once the water runs clear, turn off the pump. With a slide valve, push the handle down and start the pump. Once the pump is primed, add the required DE. If using a multiport valve, rotate the handle to rinse. Turn on the pump and let water flow for 20-30 seconds, cleaning out the plumbing lines. Turn off the pump and rotate the valve back to filter. Turn on the pump and once primed add required DE.

I am getting DE back into my pool after I backwash, do you know why?
Reply
The main reason is that one or more of your grids are torn and DE is passing through. Please remove all the grids and thoroughly inspect each for rips or cracks in the plastic structure. Also check the manifold ( the piece the grids fit into ) for cracks in the plastic. If there is nothing wrong with either of those, one other possibility is that the spider gasket in the multi-port valve may be torn and not sealing correctly.

Nut Drivers, Adjustable Wrench
1. First I measured the connections up and the old filter and the new filter were pretty much the same.
2. Removed the old Filter.
3. The new filter stood a little lower so I just added about 1/4" of hardiboard on the bottom.
4. The filter screwed into my existing connections perfectly, no PVC work was required.
5. Followed the instructions and added DE earth.

(5 out of 5 stars) DE pool filter par excellence

I recently purchased a Hayward DE-3620 filter as a replacement for a 10-yr old Hayward DE-3600, and was initially most satisfied with the ability to directly install the new unit in place of the old one without having to make any adjustments whatsoever to the interface connections with the existing vari-flow valve and external piping. Upon first use, I found welcome improvements had been made to the ease of operating the air relief valve and to the pressure gage with a simple means for indicating changes in pressure from the initial setting and when filter cleaning is required. Having just encountered a particularly heavy accumulation of oak pollen and blosom debris that indicated a need to manually clean the filter elements (rather than the more usual backwash routine) I was most impressed with Hayward's changes to the design of the clamp ring and the relative ease and speed with which the top shell and the internal filter elements could be removed. I am pleased to see that Hayward has continued to improve their already great DE filter product line.

Pros: Easy to install. piping same dimension from ground as compared to previous generation hayward DE filter allowing for easy retrofit
Cons: None
Filter easy to install and works great. Not sure why it is paired with a 1 1/2 HP pump that only has 1 1/2 connections when the filter and valve are all 2" Would think for volume all piping should be the same diameter

(5 out of 5 stars) Much better than old style
Reviewed By: Shawn F. from Jay, ME ()
Pros: Ease of cleaning
Cons: None thus far
Had an old style DE filter and took forever to remove all the bolts so I could clean out the "junk" inside and get the filter moving again. I live in the northeast and with all the leaves and algae it gets clogged in the spring when we open and it was a pain. This new filter is soo much easier.
