Can you connect your pool pump electrical and Pool Pilot salt water controller directly to the HP50HA system so that all systems run on the HP50HA timer. The pump is 1 1/2 HP.
Reply
No, the timer on the HP50HA does not control a pool pump and salt water chlorinator.
Reply
What does is cost to run this unit? Does it have an efficiency rating?
Reply
The cost to run the unit is dependant on the price you pay per kilowatt hour. It is similar to the price to run an air conditioner during the summer. The efficiency rating can be found on this brochure
Reply
Would this unit be compatible with a solar electric powered home?
Reply
Hello Dave - This unit will require a 20 amp breaker and 230 voltage. If your system can provide that, the heat pump will work.
Reply
What is the max temperature that unit will heat the water to?
Reply
Hi Sally, This Hayward Heat Pump has a max heat of 104 degrees. Since heat pumps use outside air to heat, we would need for you answer our Pool Heat Pump Sizing Questions please email us back with the answers to these questions and we will give you a heat pump audit which will provide detailed information in regards to max. heating and operaitonal costs.

Will the warranty be void if using in a saltwater pool? Everything I read it should accommodate a 21ft round by 54 inch deep pool. We are looking to extend our season do you think this would be sufficient?
Reply
Hi Steven, This would be a great option for extending your season on a 21' round pool. The warranty would not be void on a saltwater pool as long as you keep your salt readings within normal range which would be in 3,000 - 4,000 PPM of salt. Sometimes you will see the warranty say the product is not intended for saltwater but they are talking of ocean water which has a much higher concentration of salt, normally 50,000 PPM or so.

We have a 15' round above ground pool and need a new electric heater. What do you suggest - nothing too big. The one we had was huge and loud.
Reply
Jeanne, The HP50HA Hayward heat pump will be a good size for your pool. Please keep in mind that this is an electric heat pump and not an electric heater.

what is the difference between HP50HT and HP50HA?
Reply
Gene, The Hayward Heat Pro 50,000 BTU Heat Pump (Horizontal Fan) is designed to save space and is also able to cool your pool if it gets too hot. The Hayward Heat Pro Heat Pump 50k BTU (HP50TA) is more traditional unit, larger in size also as efficient as the HP50HA unit but does not have the ability to cool.

I have an in-ground pool and spa about 13,500 gal.
I have no gas at my home
What are my options for a pool heater
Reply
Hi Dave, If you have no gas then your two options are a heat pump or a purely electric heater. The purely electric heaters are not that popular as they are very expensive to operate. I would suggest a heat pump if you are just looking to extend your pool season by 1 month in the spring and 1 month in the fall as they are very economical to operate.

what is the warranty on the hp50ha
Reply
The Hayward Heat pump is warranted to be free of defects in materials and workmanship for a period of 1 year parts and labor. The compressor component has a 2 year warranty. The titanium tube component of the heat exchanger has a 5 year parts only warranty.

What is the minimum outside temperature for this unit to work efficiently?
I'm in central Texas with an average winter low temperature of 30-40 f.
In my pool enclosure the minimum temperature will run around 50 due to the heating of the pool.
Thanks
Reply
The Hayward Heat Pro 50,000 is intended to work at a temperature as low as 50 degrees. Between 50-60 degrees you will , at most, get a half degree rise in temp.

What size breaker for HP50HA model and size wire to run from panel BX.
Reply
Hi, This unit requires a 20 amp breaker 230 volts. The size wire would be determine base on the run length. I would recommend consulting a license electrician.
Reply
One more question: should I use a single pole or a two-pole 20amp circuit breaker & do I need to use a fuse box cut-off/disconnect outside
Reply
Hi Joe, A Double Pole (230 volt) 20 amp breaker is required, do not think a fuse box is needed but I would recommend that you consult a license electrician.

Can water be ran through the pump when it's turned off or does it need a bypass system? Also can a solar heater be attached inline with the pump?
Reply
You can run water through it while it's off but to prolong the life of your heating units you'll want a bypass. This go for heaters, heat pumps and solar heat pumps.

I have a 16 x 32 oval pool, 48" deep. wanting to extend pool season. this is slightly over recommended size. could i still use this unit?
Reply
Hi, You can use this unit, however this unit requires special installation. The unit has to be elevated above the water level of the pool.
Reply
We are about to install the heat pump HP50HA bought at the end of last season, for our 15' x 30' above ground pool. The manual appears to be saying that the unit's intake pipe has to be higher than the surface of the water. Can this really be that this unit is sold for above-ground pools, and one must build a platform over 52 inches high to install up in the air higher than the pool?? Or, is that for inground only, and we can install this on ground level by the pool pump?
Reply
Hi Joan, This unit does required to be installed above the pool water level because of the horizontal fan design. So you will have to build a platform to elevate the unit, it will not work if it's installed at ground level.
Reply
What is the difference between the heat mode and the auto mode. Not sure which mode to set the pump on.
Reply
This unit has three settings. Auto, Heat, & cool. Auto will be where you set the cool temp and heat temp you want and run like an AC unit. If you select heat or cool it will only run to maintain those temp's your want.

What happens to the heater if you do not install the water inlet above the water line. How do we find out what adjustment would need to be made if it is installed below the pool waterline? Thanks

Hi Dawn, The heater will not work as intended if it's not installed by the manufacturers specs.

I have a 125 volt pool pump motor. But this unit states that the out put to the pool pump is 230 volt just like the heat pump. Do I need to connect my pool pump motor to the heat pump? If so do I need to buy a new 230 volt pool pump motor?
Reply
Hi Steven, Your pump will need 230 volt capability in order to be wired to this heat pump.
Reply
When set on "Heat", it will heat the pool water. Set on "Cold" it will cool the water if it is too hot due to sun heating or very hot weather in the upper 90's. But what does "Auto" do? How do I set it and what will it do?
Reply
Hi Richard, If the unit is in "Auto" it will only heat when the water temp drops below the desired water temperature. You can use the "Mode" button to set the unit to auto, instructions are located in the HP50A & HP50HA Manual.

Hi Mike, If Hayward states that it's a misprint and can be installed at ground level then you will not have to build a stand for it. We're going off the info in the manual.

According to the installation manual, available on our website, that the distance from the wall is a minimum 11.8", sides 26.7", front 98" and top 19.7".

Can you explain physically why "It is necessary that the water-in pipe inlet be higher than the pool surface."
This implies that this unit is not built for and above ground pool - correct?
Reply
This unit is required to be installed above the pool water level because of the horizontal fan design. You would have to build a platform to elevate the unit for above ground pool applications. It will not work if it's installed at ground level on an above ground pool.

I have an indoor 12500 gallon inground pool. Need temp to be around 85 degrees stable. I have a large DH unit that as a byproduct with a built-in heat exchanger helps keep heat around 81 but can't get that last 4 degrees. I would need to mount your unit in this room but your website states that may be an issue. My HVAC EQ is in this room as well and could be adjusted to solve any concern of recirc or heat pump air. Can we discuss issues live at 317-345-6936?
Reply
You're not going to be able to use a heat pump on an indoor pool, it has to be a heater. So either propane or natural gas.

It'a a false statement to put the unit HP50A above the pool...the pool supplier I bought it from sells more then 100 a season , i've one myself and it's on the ground. No issue at all...just don't get your point and Hayward also does not even mention anything with regards to above ground !!!

Hi Louis, We were going by the owner's manual on that. I spoke to a Hayward representative and they told me that it was a misprint in the manual about having the pipe inlet higher than the pool surface, which is on page 4 of the owner's manual.

Have an 80amp 220v subpanel & I need to do the electrical myself. ?? Ineed to know the sequencing of the wiring from the panel to the equip. Does the heatpump go directly to the breaker & then to the pump? Also, where does the chlorinator fit into the mix?

Is this heat pump PRE-CHARGED [already full of refrigerant]? The Manual does not discuss any need to CHARGE [refregierant] the system, and I see now hi/lo connectors shown in the manual used to CHARGE the unit. Again, does the unit come ready-to-go charged full of proper REFRIGERANT?
