According to Hayward their heat pumps have a flow rate range of 30 to 70 GPM, with an optimum flow rate of 45 GPM. If your pump is capable of significantly more flow than this, a flow meter is recommended to insure the flow rate is within the prescribed range.

Generally no. Heat Pumps work by transferring heat from the surrounding air to the pool water. If a heat pump is installed indoors there must be a continuous supply of warm air from which the heat pump can extract heat. If you must heat the air in the room before the heat pump can extract that heat to heat the pool, there would be no benefit to the heat pump.

No. Any installation that causes the air being discharged from the top of the heat pump to be recirculated back into the heat pump will cause a loss of capacity and efficiency in the heat pump. Installation of a heat pump under a deck, or a low over hang will allow the air being discharged to be drawn back in by the heat pump.

What is the warranty on this unit?

As of 5/1/2015 : The HAYWARD heat pump pool heater is warranted to be free of defects in materials and workmanship for a period of two (2) years for parts and (1) one year for labor. In the state of Florida, warranty labor is covered for (2) years. This warranty is applicable to the original location and owner only and is not transferable. The compressor component has a five (5) year limited warranty with parts and labor warranted the first two (2) years and parts only warranted in years three (3), four (4) and five (5). The titanium tube component of the heat exchanger has a ten (10) year warranty. HAYWARD will not void this warranty due to improper pool chemistry. This warranty is valid only if the product is installed according to the HAYWARD specifications.

The heat pump must be placed to provide clearances on all sides for maintenance and inspections. 1. A minimum of 24 in [61 cm] of clearance on all sides. 2. If the heat pump is to be installed under a cover or vertical overhang, the unit must have a minimum of 72 in. [183 cm] of clearance from the top of the heat pump to the bottom of the cover or overhang. 3. Install the heat pump a minimum of 60 in. [1.5 m] from the inside wall of the pool, spa, solid fence, or permanent barrier. Canadian installations require a minimum of 120 in. [3 m] of clearance from pool water

currently have a HP21002 116.000 Btu that needs replacing. Will the 125,000 btu HP21254 replace it ? What is the distance from mounting surface to bottom water connection and distance between water inlet and outlet.

Hi Douglas, You can replace your HP21002 unit with the HP21254T model. The style of the units are different so you will have to re-plumb the replacement unit but the electrical will be the same. The only dimensions we have can be found on the Hayward Heat Pro Brochure.

Hello Danny, yes the Hayward HeatPro Heat Pump 125,000 BTU's would be a good size for your pool. The manufacturer also recommends you adding a check valve such as PART#25830-714-000. With any Heat Pump or Heater we recommend you getting a solar blanket, to retain heat at night and on cloudy cool days.

Being that your pool has a larger surface area it would be wise to go with any 140k BTU model. The Hayward Heatpro, Pentair Ultratemp and RayPak heat pumps are likely the top 3 most popular models.

HI Chris, That is the only difference between theses two models, is the BTU's. With the price difference being minimal I would recommend the HP21254T, it would heat your pool faster than the HP21104T unit.

Hi Chris, Heat pump uses electricity to operate. BTU is the measuring unit used to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit. The larger the BTU the faster it will heat.

The best option would be the larger of the two. The higher the BTU's of the heater, the faster it will heat your pool. The faster the pool heats up, the less the heat pump will need to run, and that translates into energy savings to you.

Is the HP21254T at 125k BTU about the same as the HP21104T? Both electric, is one an older model? Have home in Spring Hill FL about 12K gallons. I was suggested the 95K BTU and the 110k BTU then stumbled upon the HP21254T.

Hello Dan- Although these two units are very similar, they are different in the BTU sizes. The larger the unit, the faster it will heat your water. The faster it heats the water, the less time it will need to run. This will translate into a reduced electric cost to heat your pool.

I have a few questions; why are the specs for the HP21254T not listed with the others, it goes from the 110 to the 140. What are they, I'm presuming it takes a 60amp fuse? next is I have 1 1/2 inch lines to and from the pool is this ok with the 125 unit? I'm in Florida, should I put a bypass in for the summer time. Yes, you would need a 60 amp breaker for that heater and the plumbing is 2" but that will not be a problem. You will just need an adapter when it is installed. The minimum flow rate is 30 gallons per minute on that heat pump so if your 3/4HP pump is pushing that then you will be fine there. As far as the bypass valve, that would be a yes. Anytime you are not using your heat pump you would want to use the bypass valve to help prolong the life of your heat pump.

My question is about a 14,000 gallon pool, located in Tampa, Fl near the Bay, about 1 mile inland. There is a Hayward heatpro now, was put in about 9 years ago and the compressor is bad, the techs are telling me, once the compressor goes, due to leaks after.....you need to replace the whole thing. (It also, has not been running for about a year) It's the tall round one. Questions:

I have an unusual situation. My wife and I like our 15x30 pool (6' deep) to be constantly in the mid to upper 90s (35C) year round in central florida, where it can get chilly in the winter. Good morning Todd, Heat pumps are great for Central FL. Plus, will be way better on cost than a propane heater. I don't know about upper 90's. You would be running all the time to keep that heat. Plus burning through your chemicals. Upper 80's Low 90's do able. Heat pumps pull heat from the air. If you wanted to prolong heat you could get a cover to help trap it in.

I have a 15,000 gallon pool in southeast Florida. We like to keep the pool in the upper 70's during the winter. Hello Kevin- I would recommend the Hayward Heat Pro Heat Pump 140,000 BTU - HP21404t based on the size of your pool. Keep in mind that the larger the heating unit, the faster it will heat your pool and the less time it would need to run. I know California is very focused on conservation and reduction of energy usage, as well. The 125,000 BUT unit would be sufficient, but keep in mind that it would require longer periods of run time to reach your desired temperature. You would need to upgrade the breaker to a 60 amp regardless of which unit you would choose.

I would not go any smaller than the 125,000 BTU model if not suggest the next model bigger. The 140,000 BTU model will be more efficient for your pool size and location. Great heat pump for regulating your pool temperature, but if you have a hot tub with your pool as well you will want a heater, propane or natural gas, instead.

Hi, A heat pump would be greener than using a gas heater to heat a pool but a gas heater would heat to your desired temperature faster. I would recommend at least an 110K BTU heat pump or 200k heater.

I would not recommend a heat pump smaller than the 125,000 BTU model that you currently have. A heat pump with less than 120,000 BTU is going to go inefficient.

Hi, Matt no reducing down to the 1.5 inch will not harm the heater. Hayward heat pumps have a flow rate range of 30 to 70 GPM, with an optimum flow rate of 45 GPM. h30.25 w x 34 d x 44 h. So a 4x4 or 3x3 pad would be needed

Either one of these models would work well with your swimming pool. The 125k BTU model will heat your pool faster.

Hi, Charlie. Press the SET key until you see F_C and by pressing one of the arrow keys, you can switch to °F or °C. Once the temperature unit has been programmed, it will be displayed for five seconds, and will then return to the actual pool water temperature in the mode that you have chosen.

How does the heat pump run in unison with the pool pump? are they both controlled with a timer so that they run at the same time? i have the hp21254T purchased from you and when reading the electrical schematic it does not mention the timer. if i turn the unit on and off using a timer does it automatically come on and use my previously set or does it need line voltage and to be turned on and off via controls? Hi, Josh. The heat pump does not need to be controlled by a timer. Once the unit is powered, its activated once sufficient water flow is detected.

I’m trying to decide between this 125k BTU unit and the HP21404t 140k BTU unit. The pool is only 8,000 gal and 270 sq ft. Surface area. I’m in NE Florida and worse case i would want to heat the water from 50 degrees to 80 or 85 degrees in the cold months. Will the 125k BTU unit suffice?

Hi Jihua, Low Ambient Temperature If the air outside the heat pump is not warm enough to produce heat, the system will shut down. The actual point at which your unit will shut down due to low temperature varies depending on which model you purchased, current weather conditions, and the amount of sunlight reaching the heat pump. The shutdown can occur anywhere within a wide range of temperatures, usually 45≡F-55≡F. This is not a “fixed” range. We stress that climate conditions, sunlight, and various models respond quite differently to low ambient temperature. A shutdown occurs because low temperatures will activate the systems low-pressure safeguard switch (digital thermostats will display a code “LP”.) The unit will start up again when the temperature has raised enough to reset this switch. Note: Low ambient temperature does not necessarily affect the Chiller models or the cooling cycle of the heat/cool units.

We have a DEAD HP21003T pump that we are looking to replace with Hayward HeatPro Heat Pump 125,000 BTU's - HP21254T. The dead one is currently sitting on a 36x48 pad. Will it be an "easy" switch out or require a larger pad, higher circuit, different piping or anything else? I want to sound like I know what I need when I call around for installation :-)

Hi Claudia, There will be some re-plumbing but the hard part of adding the appropriate electrical will not be needed as that will already be in place from your current heat pump. We recently made a Video on How to Replace a Hayward Pool Heat Pump and this will be almost identical to the job you will have performed. I would suggest watching that video and you can see that it should be a relatively easy job.

Hi, Currently we have a Pentair ThermoFlo HP900 heat pump that needs to be replaced with the input and output flow on one side of the unit. The new Ultra Temp 120 has the flow on either end of the unit and would present a plumbing issue. Can you tell me the distance between the input and output on the Hayward Unit? If we install the Hayward will it connect with our Pentair Easy Touch control system? I've added a picture of our current set up so you can see the plumbing issues. Thx!
Hi, Chase. The distance between this Heat Pump connections is 18-7/8" center to center. This can hook up to your control but since it is not a Pentair Heat Pump it would limit the controls to basic On/Off.

Wayne, all warranties outside of 60 days from the date of purchase on the Hayward Pool Products HeatPro Heat Pump 125,000 BTU need to be purchased through the manufacturer directly (Hayward). They will need your proof of purchase and installation as well as the serial number from your unit. They will contact a warranty center on your behalf and have them come out to service the unit. Hayward Pool Products can be reached by calling 800.429.9273.

We have a 14,000 gallon in-ground pool with 455 sq feet of surface area, looking to purchase the hp21254T heat pump. We live in Louisville KY would this unit be sufficient to heat from May to October.

Probably not. Per our Heater Sizing Chart, you can probably expect a 1 degree increase in temperature per hour in ideal conditions. Note that heat pumps lose some efficiency as the outdoor temperatures go down (note the BTU performance on this brochure) and don't forget to add in the cost of running the pump while the heater is on. Whatever you do, be sure you put a solar blanket on the pool when it is not in use to keep the heat in. Our guide on How To Select An Inground Heater has more information.
