How do you replace a hayward sand filter drain plug? Mine leaks & I can't get it out.

The removal of the drain plug should not be so tough. It is not a piece that gets removed weekly, so it may offer up some resistance. The top cap, like the plug should un-screw and the plug should slide out. If the tank is still completely full, there may be too much pressure. Try to remove some of the sand and try again, perhaps with a crescent wrench ( for leverage )

Terry, The drain assembly is threaded into the tank. You should be able to remove it.

Last fall my drain plug cap was stuck. I used a wrench for more leverage to turn the cap but the entire drain plug came out (I was probably turning cap the wrong way). I cannot seem to get the drain plug to thread back into the sand filter, although the threads on both do not appear to be damaged. I looked at the threading and it appears clockwise to thread as you look at the filter. Any suggesting for getting the drain plug back into the filter ?
Reply
Hi Dennis, If the threads appear to be fine you can try using teflon tape.

We bought the drain plug kit, and after putting it back together (had to use a wrench as it would not tighten due to sand constantly getting in the threads) it still leaks terribly. Any suggestions on how to avoid sand particles in the threads?

Hi April, You will have to remove the sand from the filter and rinse out the tank prior to installing the Drain Plug Assembly.

Will This fit a 24" Excel Sand Filter? They look identical by design.. Thanks

Hello Jacob- Unfortunately we have no information or schematics for the excel filters so we can not confirm this part will work. I would contact the MFG to see if they can get you a part number for the drain needed.

I am looking for a replacement drain cap for a Rx Clear Radiant Sand Filter with a 24 inch tank. It was thrown away during clean up and is in the landfill now ... so I need just the cap, no the entire plug and cap assembly. Questions: Is this a compatible part? If so, can I buy just the cap? Thank you!

Yes, the Drain Plug Assembly NE6170 - NEP2123 is correct. Unfortunately, the cap is not able to be purchased separately.

I need a new drain assembly, I have a Best Choice Pro Above Ground 4500GPH 19” sand filter w/1.0HP. Is the NE6170-NEP2123 compatible with what I need? Thank you

Hi Priscilla, We spoke with Best Choice and they could not confirm that this is the drain for there filter and they do not sell replacement parts either. We are fairly confident this is the correct replacement drain plug however if it did not work then you could return to us, you would just be responsible for the return shipping charge.

Is there a lock nut on the inside of the sand filter tank that holds drain plug assembly. In other words do I have to empty the sand out of the tank if the plug is leaking on the outside? I would definitely appreciate a response. Thanks

Yes, there is a locking ring located on the inside of the NE6170 Blue Wave SandMan.

Water is leaking between the drain plug and the sand tank. I tried to tightening it but it gets worse. I have a NE6150/Ne6170 sand filter. Do I need a new assembly? Is there a lock nut on the inside of the sand tank that is loose or does it screw from the outside in directly into the tank.
Reply
Jim, yes, there is a lock nut located on the inside of this filter. We suggest getting the Drain Plug Assembly NE6170 - NEP2123 for the repair.
