I have a Pentair model 300 chlorinator doesn't put out chlorine. removed valve on bottom of unit and it appears there's something in it. Is this a check valve ? or is there debris in it? thanks

Hi Jon, The Check Valve w/ Elbow should have a ball in it. If the ball is stuck the it will block chlorine frome going back into the pool.

What is the relevant function of the check valve? I continually have problems with this part. It seems to be poorly designed. I can't even get one season without replacing. I'm thinking about drilling out the bb ball bearing.

The Valve, Check With Elbow (r172061) will prevent water from entering the feeder when you recharge the feeder. Please see http://images.inyopools.com/cloud/documents/rainbow-300-om.pdf page 1 for How to Recharge Feeder.

If your pool is low on chlorine no matter how long you run the pump, check your chlorinator. First check to see if your intake valve is all the way open (Set at "5" on Pentair Rainbow Lifegard 300).
Next open the top of the chlorinator to see if the tower is filled with chlorine tabs. If you run the pump and the chlorine tabs are not dissolving, the check valve is probably not functioning.
The check valve is the plastic elbow at the bottom of the chlorinator and it only takes a few minutes to replace.
To replace the valve, disconnect the chlorinator from the water line, take off the top lid and dump out the chlorine tabs (be careful, because when you do this there will be strong chlorine fumes...it's best to do this outside).
Turn the chlorinator upside down. With your hand, unscrew the old elbow check valve. Then, screw the new valve in place. Hand tighten to snug only. If you overtighten, you could crack the chlorinator...not a good idea to use a wrench.
Turn the chlorinator upright and reconnect with the water line. Fill the tower with chlorine tabs, replace the lid and turn the pump back on.
Check for leaks and slightly tighten some more if water is dripping (If it is old and keeps leaking, you may want to remove the new valve and add pipe sealant to the threads).
This only took me about 10 minutes to complete.

These check valves can freeze up especially when stored over the winter (even indoors). I ordered a spare last year, so had it available when I reconnected the offline Rainbow Lifeguard to the pump system. This replacement part is much cheaper than replacing the whole chlorinator. If your chlorinator is not working, check this part by removing it from the bottom of the chlorinator and shaking it. If you don't hear the ball jiggle inside, it probably froze up and needs to be replaced.
