When should I change the sand in my filter?
Reply
You should change the sand in your filter every 5-7 years. You can generally tell that it is time if your pool water is not as clear as it normally is or when you notice the interval between backwashes is shorter. You can use > this guide to walk you through it.

Does this model have all the necessary equipment to operate the filter?

John, The Pentair SD-60 Sand Dollar w/ 6 Way Valve Filter comes with just the filter tank and multiport valve. You'll need to purchase the other connections, hoses or get the 6' Flex Hose Kit (155151) and any other equipment needed.

I have a sd-60 sand filter above ground. what is the part called that has like a screen that is shaped like a 6 slices of apple pie , may or may not have had a small dome on it

You may be referring to the Standpipe Assembly, which has six Laterals attached, which help filter the water through the sand. They are in stock as individual units as is the standpipe assembly as a whole. You can see a diagram of the filter's parts here.

Is this the right size filter for a 25000 gallon in-ground pool?
Reply
Hi, This filter can be used to filter a 25,000 gallon pool in an 8 hour time frame. When sizing a filter to a pool you will also have to take the flow rate of the pump into consideration.

My Pentair SD-60 is 6 years old and has started pumping sand back into the pool. Started last month and its getting worse, vacuumed almost 3 buckets today and that is only 1 week from last vacuum and backflush. I used the Zeosand.
Thanks for any help

Hello Jim I would check your laterals and replace your pipe system. Standpipe Assembly, Sd60 After 10-2004 (152227) there were "how to" http://www.inyopools.com/HowToPage/how_to_replace_a_lateral_in_a_pool_sand_filter.aspx

My below ground 25000 gallon pool is leaking water somewhere. i paid a company 350 to find the leak and get it repaired. the company said there was no leak in the lines but i need to replace the multi post . what is the multi-post? the guy quoted 450 for labor and cost of the multi post. I have a pentair tagelus TA 60/60D. I haven't heard from the guy for over 2 weeks. should i get another company involved?

Hello Phil- OK the first question about the vacuum hose. This is NOT the correct replacement for your pool cleaner. The correct hose comes in 4ft sections like the Generic 4' Automatic Pool Vac Hose - White - 19-752. The second question, it seems like the "guy" was referring to what is called a Multiport Valve. Here is a link to the Pentair Tagelus Fiberglass Sand Filter Parts diagram. This list mentions a few different valve models depending on if you have a clamp on or screw on style. If there was a leak happening in this area, it would be noticeable around the top of the filter valve. You may need a second opinion.

Which do you recommend the Pentair SA60 or the Hayward S244T. and is Dual speed an option and is that necessary?
Reply
Hi. Between the two model, I will recommend the S244T filter. It has a higher effective filtration area than the SD-60 filter. A dual speed pump can be used with that model to save on energy consumption.

I am getting little pressure in the return line. So far I have changed the multi port valve(bought a new one) changed the sand in the filter(trying Zeosand but when I backwash after the change the system is sucking the new sand out) is this caused by bad laterals? The looked good when I checked them or do not use Zeosand?? Also when I run the multi port on filter it sends sand into the pool. Running the filter water through a Pentair heater that will not fire because of low pressure ?? HELP

What motor pumps can I use with this sand filter? And what hp can I go up to?
Reply
Hi, Kristal. Several different pumps can be used with this filter as long as it does not exceed the filter's max flow rate of 60 GPM. The Total Dynamic Head (TDH) of your pool will need to be calculated in order to size a pump that can be used.

Hi Katherine, if your Pentair SD-60 filter is from 2009 or newer the parts for the 26-2506 valves will work for you, so this Valve Handle (272520) will replace your broken one.

How large of a pool can this handle?
Reply
It depends upon the pump and the amount of head you have in your system. The maximum rated flow for an 8 hour period for his filter is 28,800 gallons when it is paired with the maximum rated 60 gallons per minute pump. We recommend over-sizing the filter to be absolutely confident it can handle the flow coming from the pump. See our guide on How To Size a Pool Filter for more detail.
