Hello Mindy, Lower the water of the swimming pool below the skimmer. Using an air compressor or blower side of a shop vac, blow water out of swimming pool plumbing by blowing air down the skimmer and through the plumbing. You can connect the air compressor to your pump by unscrewing the drain plug on the pump. For an above ground pool, use an air pillow underneath the cover. Air pillows will "tent" the cover and direct water toward the edge of pool for easier removal. They will also allow forming ice to crack inward preventing damage to the shell or structure of the pool.

how to keep water off the cover causing it to sag

Hi, Dennis. You will need to use an Air Pillow to keep water from accumulating in the center of the pool.

Barbara, in order to create the tension needed to keep the animals out we would suggest getting a solid safety cover. This would require you to install hardware into your deck. But, it is really the only way. Otherwise, the weight of the animals will come down on the liner too much and cause it to fall in the pool.
