Spring
I have a TM-22. Replaced spider gasket but i still get some weepage out backflow pipe when in filter mode. In addition, the handle which used to snap down vigorously into slot on filter head doesnt... Suspect weak spring... It is rusted ... L you agree.

Hi Don, Sounds right. A weak handle and weepage are good indicators of a damaged spring. Here is a link to our guide on " How To Replace a Pool Multiport Valve Spring"

will this spring fit SM-20-2 SERIAL # 293? we have water leaking from blue hose when in filter position. Do you think we need a new handle as well?
Reply
Hi Tammy, Yes this is the correct spring for the SM-20-2 valve. If you have water leaking out the backwash hose then it is typically the Spider Gasket and this Spring which will need to be replaced.

There is a spring under the handle that keeps tension against the diverter gasket. Over time this spring looses its strength and does not hold properly against the diverter gasket. Simply remove the screws on the diverter valve cover. After removing the cover you need to remove the pin that holds the handle to the cover …The handle is under tension so you have to compress the top in order to remove the pin. I placed the cover in a vise that I have to compress it and then the pin came out easily with a small tap from a screw driver that a placed against the pin..After removing the pin the handle removes easily and you can get to the spring. Simply replace the spring with the new one and be sure to replace the two spacers that are on the shaft. You then need to compress the top cover again in order to replace the handle
. This is where I used my vise but you could use a c- clamp or another means that you figure out to compress the spring. Once compressed replace the handle then the pin. Now, replace the cover on the valve , replace the screws and you are done. Do not over tighten the screws. The Inyopools spring fit perfectly on my Pentair TM-12A 6 way valve. After installation my filter worked perfectly and my water cleared up nicely…

1) Remove top of diverter valve.
2) Remove spyder gasket. This proved to be very tedious and time consuming since factory had glued entire gasket seat onto the valve head.
3) After making sure all of prior gasket and adhesive was removed, strategically glue and reinsert new gasket. Apply silicone lubricant to gasket.
4) Replace all additional parts to be replaced. Handle washer, spring, spring washer, 2 O-rings.
5) Reattach valve head.

1. Remove the screws holding the valve mechanism onto the valve body. Remove the mechanism from the body
2. Inspect the 'o' ring between the two valve parts, the spider gasket, and other parts for wear. (I had to purchase a new spider gasket at a local store. I should have purchased a repair kit from Inyo instead of just a spring.)
3. (After replacing the spider gasket, which was a separate and more involved job), reassemble the valve with the new spring. Get a friend to insert the pin in the handle while you compress the spring in the partly assembled mechanism. This requires three hands or, if you plan ahead like I didn't, a rig to hold the mechanism in a compressed position while you insert the pin yourself. The instructions that came with the valve include a suggested design for such a rig.
4. Reassemble the valve, making sure that the 'o' ring is properly set in place. Tighten the screw in an alternating pattern.
In my case, I had to clean out the remnants of the old spider gasket and glue the new one in place with silicone cement. I put the valve in the 'filter' position to hold the gasket in place, and did not put water through the valve for 24 hours.
5. Restart the pump per manufacturer's recommended procedure.

These valve springs corrode and fail over time and can cause damage to the piping system as a result of the valve slamming shut under pump pressure, rather than firmly seating under spring pressure before the pump is started. It seems that the springs could be coated with a polymer or elastomer to reduce or prevent corrosion.

Very quick ship and the replacement valve spring took care of the problem of water pressure pushing the valve plate up and allowing water to flow through paths it was not supposed to. Replaced a 10 year old spring which had weakened.
