Is it possible to purchase just the spring for the flow valve assembly?

No - the spring is only available as part of the assembly.

Is it possible to heat or cool the end of the Flow Valve Assy to test it's opening/closing?

Yes, you can just put it in hot water & then again in cold water & if you see no valve movement it is a bad valve.
