Digital Controls
The Raypak Digital gas heater comes with a microprocessor based thermostat control. This control allows you to set your pool or spa temperature precisely at your favorite setting just by pressing an up or down temperature control button. The Digital display gives you a constant read out of your pool water temperature. Just set it, and forget it! Truly simple.
Troubleshooting a gas heater has never been easier. The Raypak Digital has on-board diagnostic controls that let the user and the service professional know what is going on with the heater at all times. In the event that you would ever have a problem with the heater, the digital display will show where the problem is in the control circuit. It's like having a service technician built into every heater!
The Raypak Digital is compatible with most major pool control and remote systems on the market today. Any two-wire or three-wire remote can connect to the Raypak Digital and be integrated into the pool control system of your choice.
Wind Resistant
The Raypak Digital has the best outdoor design in the market today. With over 50 years in designing and building gas heaters, Raypak has put all that experience into its newest heater design. No need for fans to combat drafting problems, the Raypak Digital was designed for outdoor installations with its exclusive low profile design. It is so thoughtfully and carefully designed it actually protects itself from the things that tend to stifle ordinary pool and spa heaters: falling leaves, wind, airborne debris, rain, downdrafts, updrafts, sleet, snow, etc. In fact it is so efficiently designed it ensures uninterrupted heating performance regardless of all but the most extreme weather conditions. Built Raypak tough. Built to last.
Cabinet
One look will tell you that the Raypak Digital is different! The look is contemporary. The design is advanced. And inside and out it's engineered to last. The attractive forest green and charcoal gray panels complement the latest pool and spa equipment designs. Raypak's original "pagoda top" design will keep the heater operating even in extreme wind conditions and downdrafts.
The Raypak Digital has a polyester coated, non-corrosive cabinet that is more durable than solventborne and waterborne coated metal cabinets. Every piece of sheet metal that gets powder coated goes through a 7-stage wash system making certain the powder paint has a perfect bond. Underneath the tough and beautiful finish you will find galvanized metal that offers superior rust prevention and years of durable service.
Non-Corrosive Waterways
The Raypak Digital incorporates the latest in header design technology. Raypak's state-of-the-art engineering department utilized the latest in 3-D computer aided design to engineer the part for optimal performance. Polymer resin headers prevent rust stains from harming your pools surface giving you years of trouble-free swimming pleasure
This Raypak Digital heater has cupro-nickel fin tube heat exchangers for added protection against aggressive water chemistry. Although rare, there are certain applications, like health club spa's, where copper is just not the best choice. Cupro-nickel offers superior tolerance to bad and fluctuating water chemistry, thanks to a harder surface and thicker walled fin tube.

I've seen the Raypak 014953 listed as 360 BTU and here as 406. Which is correct?

Hi, Jeff. This is a 406,000 BTU unit as described by Raypak. However, you have input BTU and output BTU which will vary.

I have 2 406k btu lp heaters. I have 1 leaking, but the fittings are opposite for water , is that a special order? Or are these designed to be universal and fittings can be switched to either side? I.E. the water fittings are normally on right and I need left side fittings for this leaking heater.
Thanks!

Hi, David. The heat exchanger is field reversible.

Why is this a better option for saltwater pools?
Reply
Hi David, We suggest this for salt pools because of the Cupro-nickel Heat Exchanger. Cupro-nickel is an alloy of copper that contains nickel and other strengthening elements. Because of this, it is highly resistant to corrosion in salt water. Pool heaters with a cupro-nickel heat exchanger are recommended for customers with a salt pool. Using one with a cupro-nickel heat exchanger will extend the life of your heater.

Our Raypak P-R406A-EP-C, professionally installed in 2000, has been badly corroded, leaking, and problematic at least since 2012, so in Feb 2024 we ordered a new P-R406A-EP-X from INYO to replace it. We ordered it on a Tue; it arrived the following Fri. The truck driver set down the pallet exactly where we asked and patiently waited for us to unwrap and open the box for a visual inspection. Our kudos to both INYO and R+L Carriers. Our only quibble is that we weren’t phoned with a delivery time&date; we had to phone INYO and then R+L to find out that it was already on the truck out for delivery. This 2023-built R406A is almost identical to the 2000-built model, but in 2019 Raypak added a sacrificial anode and increased the length of the water connections by about 1.5”, requiring some modification to our existing plumbing. The R406 weighs about 265 lb and was well packaged; the box contains wood slats for support inside the box and those were stapled to hefty wood beams beneath the box that allow for lifting with a forklift. All that was atop and strapped to a standard 4’x4’ pallet. To move the R406A into place, I drilled ¾” holes in the pallet, used ½” EMT electrical conduit for axles and 4 small trailer wheels to make a cart, then furniture sliders and boards to slide it down into place. Installation was very straightforward, with one exception. As soon as we ran water through the R406A we discovered a large internal leak – removing the rear cover we found that the heat exchanger rear manifold’s plastic drain plug had been sheared off flush with the manifold – producing a 5’ stream of water. I used a screw extractor to remove the remainder of the plug and replaced the plug with one from the old R406A. Note that this plug is a straight 1/2”-20 drain plug, not a NPT fitting, and must have been sheared off at the factory. Other than that, there were no surprises and everything is working OK. IMHO, the Raypak 406A is quite well engineered, but I’ve found Raypak tech support exceptionally useless. Note that a DIY install receives no warranty at all. While the manual is good, it does not cover many of the problems we’ve seen with our previous R406A over the years. The first major failure was that the PC board began to always report REMOTE/DEMAND (request heating) even with the remote wires entirely disconnected – that emptied our 400 gal propane tank. A new board was the fix. The temperature sensor uses two thermistors for safety; unfortunately they share a common return internally. A problem there caused odd behavior with the temperature control. Replacing the sensor fixed it. Several times a bogus FLAME W/O CFH (Call For Heat) error message appeared; this came about in the complete absence of any flame, heat or gas due to (invisible) contamination on the blue HV lead and/or igniter rectifying the AC voltage to produce a DC current, mimicking a flame. I’ve seen both, and measured the current directly with a DMM. Cleaning the HV wire with WD40 cured with the former; the igniter had to be replaced. Our most serious problem occurred when mice built a nest between the igniter and the main burner. I noticed that there was a problem when starting up. I was reading the PC board display when the accumulated propane exploded, blowing off the front cover & stack and generating a 3 ft fireball. The PC board’s display was badly damaged, but otherwise the R406 worked fine after I removed and cleaned the burner assembly. I’ve always been able to acquire replacement parts and repair has always been fairly straightforward. Overall, we’ve been pleased with the R406A, but we keep the manual handy.
