To maintain the life of a standard pool diverter valve, you should lubricate the square seal at least twice a year. In addition you should remove the valve assembly and lubricate the 3 o-rings inside the valve at least once a year. To avoid valve maintenance you have the option of replacing these standard valves with Jandy Neverlube valves. These valves have teflon surfaces that do not need to be lubricated. This page explains what you need to do to lubricate a standard valve.

Bass Fisher - Maybe not, but you are going to have to have it open anyway when your start back up to release the air that has accumulated at the top of the tank when the pump was off.Reply

By turning off my pump, the pressure gauge is at 0. Do I still need to open the pressure relief value?Reply

valve lubricant - The clear O-ring lubricant like Magic Lube O-ring Lubricant 1 Oz. Teflon is what is being used now to lubricate diverter valves. You can use either Teflon based or silicon based. Teflon is newer.Reply

What kind of valve lubricant is pictured? Mine is a thick, sticky blue substance that looks like what is pictured. I assume this is different than regular o-ring lubricant because of it being in the cup and sitting sideways, or is it possible to use the regular o-ring lubricant (clear and not thick) inside the cup? Can I use regular o-ring lubricant (clear) on the inside once I remove the 8 screws? Thanks for another fabulous "how-to" article!Reply

I didn't even know what the grease knob was until I twisted it off of my 23 year old valve. Needless to say, I have not been greasing the valves. I searched forever to find out what the purpose of this knob was. By the way, it has been the source of an air leak in my pool that I thought was a leak in the piping. Air bubbles were forever coming out of my returns. I was to the point of having someone come in to pressure check the system (would have cost a lot of money). These knobs were the issue. This site explains everything. Hats off to you INYO!!Reply
