This guide shows you how to connect a 240 VAC 2-speed pump to an Intermatic PE653RC Pool-Spa Control System. Review our guide on "How To Set Up the Intermatic PE653RC Pool-Spa Control System - Overview"  before reading this guide. It shows you how to control a typical pool/spa system with a 5-circuit Intermatic PE653RC Pool-Spa Control System. The overview includes control of a 240 VAC 1-speed pump. This guide shows you how to substitute the 2-speed pump for thr 1-speed pump.

Step 1

REVIEW CIRCUITS - The Intermatic PE653RC Pool/Spa Control system provides 5 circuits as shown here. There are 9 terminals inside the box: terminals 1 and 2 are wired to the supply power to provide poser to the Control System; a switch between terminals 2 and 3 controls Circuit 1; terminals 2 and 4 provide Circuit 2; terminals 5 and 6 provide Circuit 3; and terminals 5 and 7 provide Circuit 4. The last Circuit, #5, on terminals 7 and 8, is a special 24VAC low voltage circuit generally used to control a heater. Note the five buttons above the terminal strip. They correlate to the five circuits and can be used to manually activate each of the circuits. Also note the voltage switch in the upper left corner of the box. This switch is used to define the supply power to terminals 1 and 2. For this configuration, we will set the switch to 240 VAC.

Step 2

REVIEW 240 VAC 1-SPEED PUMP HOOKUP - In the Overview configuration we showed how to wire a 240 VAC 1-speed Pump to circuit 1 of the Intermatic PE653RC Pool/Spa Control system. Generally this pump will have two terminals labeled L2 and L1 plus ground. L2 will go to a breaker in the power supply box and L1 will go to terminal 3 of the Control Box. The circuit will be closed with a switch between terminals 2 and 3 as shown. The switch is controlled automatically through a user programmed setting or manually through Button 1. When this circuit is "ON" the LED light above Button 1 will illuminate.

Step 3

SWAPPING A TWO SPEED PUMP - The main difference between wiring a 1- speed pump and wiring a 2-speed pump is that the 2-speed pump will have to use 2 of the 5 circuits: one for low speed and one for high speed. Which means you will have to drop one of the other four function presented in the Overview guide.

Step 4

VIEW 2-SPEED MOTOR TERMINALS - Most 2-speed motors have four terminals: "L1", "L2", Ground, plus "A", to allow for switching between the high and low speeds of the motor. "L1" and "L2" provide the "High" speed circuit; "A" and "L2" provide the "Low" speed circuit. Because "L2" is used in both circuits, it is commonly labeled "LINE" or "COMMON" for common line.

Step 5

WIRE 2-SPEED PUMP - A 2-speed pump will use two circuits, one for HIGH and one for LOW. For HIGH, the L1 pump lead will go to terminal 3 of the Control Box. The L2 pump lead will go to a breaker in the Power Supply Box. This circuit (#1) will be closed with a switch between terminals 2 and 3 as shown. The switch is controlled automatically through a user programmed setting or manually through Button 1. When this circuit is "ON" the LED light above Button 1 will illuminate. The LOW speed option is controlled through Circuit 2. The "A" pump lead will be wired to terminal 4. LOW will also use the L2 connection already wired for HIGH. This lead is COMMON to both HIGH and LOW circuits. Circuit 2 will be closed with a switch between terminals 2 and 4, as shown. This switch is controlled automatically through a user programmed setting or manually through Button 2. When this circuit is "ON" the LED light above Button 2 will illuminate.
