How many hours per day should I run my pump?
Reply
There are many factors to consider; bather load, gallons of water, pump horsepower, type and size of filter just to name a few. A good guideline is 8-10 hours a day. On the cooler days and early and late season, you can cut the run time down to 4-6 hours because there is usually less swimmers and cooler water requires less chemicals. In peak season, when it is the hottest, raising the run time to 10-12 hours per day will help to keep the pool clean and circulating during it’s time of heaviest use.

My old hayward motor died, it was a 1.5 hp a.o. smith. Would like to replace entire pump with a Hayward SP3200VSP Tristar Variable Speed. Will this work?
Reply
Hi Bill - Yes you could replace your 1.5 HP Hayward pump with the Tristar variable speed pump. For this pump we would suggest that you have a minimum of 2" plumbing. You will see a considerable savings on your electrical bill by upgrading to a variable speed pump, up to 90% energy savings!
Reply
In most single-speed or dual-speed pump electrical wiring configurations, timers are used to provide power to the pump; one timer on a single speed; two timers on a dual speed (one a hi/low). Looking at the Tristar VS Variable Speed Pump wiring schematic, it seems that no timers are required whatsoever, and that the onboard pump control circuitry is used to turn the pump on and off, etc., without having to use any timers whatsoever. Is my understanding correct?
Reply
That is correct. The Tristar SP3200VSP model has a 24-hour clock built into it. The Hayward Tristar VS Pump Owners Manual has details on configuring the timer.

Hi. Looking to replace a 1.5 HP Hayward single speed pump. Will this pump work (and will it work efficiently) on a pool with 2" suction plumbing and 1.5" return plumbing?
Reply
Hello Dave - The SP3200VSP pump will be more energy efficient and it will work for your application.

Can you provide the dimensions (LxWxH) of the shipping carton for the Hayward Tristar VS? I understand the weight is 52 pounds, but I also need the dimensions.

The boxed dimensions are roughly 26" L x 14" W x 14" H

Need your recommendation. I have 2" plumbing on a 35k gallon pool. Currently I have a older Hayward Tristar 1.85 THP pump attached with a 48sqft DE filter. I am looking for a variable speed pump to cut some utility bills. I haven't measured it but I am estimating about 45' head of water. What would you all recommend? Would the Tristar VS work?
Reply
Hi Michael, Yes this Tristar Variable Speed Pump would be our recommendation as on the high speed it will be the exact pump as you currently have. Also the plumbing ports will be in the same location meaning no re-plumbing.
Reply
Will the unions for the Tristar VS pump accept 2" or 2.5" plumbing? What exactly does "2" x 2.5" union connections". The manual list flow rates for various pipe sizes but it does not indicate the factory default unions accept (without reducers, ect).
Reply
Hi Dave, This means the union can accept either 2" or 2.5" plumbing, the inside of the unions accepts 2" plumbing and the outside of the union accepts 2.5" plumbing.

Want to upgrade to Varible speed for utility bill.
Any suggestions ?

Jerry, Thank you for your question. Unfortunately, we do not carry a variable speed pump for above ground pools.

According to the manual this pump uses 385 watts @1750RPM. At my local rate of 11c/Kwh am I correct that this pump costs 385/1000*0.11=$0.042/hr to operate vs. my single speed 220V*9.95A*1.1SF/1000*0.11=$0.264/hr to operate??
Reply
Hi Marco, Your calculation is not correct on your single speed pump, you do not need to factor in the SF. Instead of $0.27/hr it's costing you $0.24/hr.

Hi, Can I use this pump on my 11,000 gallon pool with 1.5" plumbing throughout and pair it with my current waterway 19 (45 Gal per minute) sand filter and a AquaCal 135 BTU heat pump? I see the general recommendation is 2 inch plumbing. Also, I do not have any automation or chlorinator... just the pool and heater straight up. I currently have a Hayward .75 HP Super Pump that works fine but want to save energy. Thank you very much!

Will this pump be a good replacement for a Sta-Rite Dyna-Max 1 hp up-rated single speed pump (MPRA6E-205L)? My pool is 18,000 gallons, we have a 53 ft^2 DE fliter, the Voltage is 230 and the ports are 2 in. If this pump is not a good choice, what other dual speed or variable speed pumps would you recommend? Thanks!
Reply
Paul, If your pump is up rated to 1.65 or lower this pump will work fine. if it is higher than 1.65tp like a 2hp. I would recommend the Hayward EcoStar Variable Speed Pump SVRS - SP3400VSPVR

I currently have single speed Tristar 1.5hp pump. is there a Hayward variable speed replacement motor that will be compatible with the wet end of my pump?

Replacing existing bad norstar pump that uses mech timers with a frost guard. What do i do about the frost guard now that i am wiring direct from power.

Hi, Randall. You can just bypass the time and freeze control and wire the pump directly from the breaker.

Hi,
would this be enough to replace hayward pump (model k63cxepz) 1.5 HP SF 1.3 and 3450 rpm ?
current pool info:
400,000 btu raypak heater (1 year old)
25k gallon in ground pool
hayward sand filter: 4.9 ft2 with 98 GPM max rate for backwash and filtration
no spa or any water features
1 return, 3 intakes
thanks

Hi, Will. If you can provide the model number of the Hayward Pump you currently have we can make a comparison to find out if the TriStar VS Pump is a suitable replacement.

I need to know how to manually start the pump and let it run until I want to turn it off. I know about the Quick Clean (only 60 min) but it's not long enough when I'm using the spa. There has to be a way to turn it on high and leave it on? Thank you for your help.
Reply
Here is a link to the Hayward Tristar VS Variable Speed Pump Owner's Manual. The pre-set speed settings 1-4 will run the pump at the default speeds (unless they have been programmed for different speeds) and would not turn off (unless the speeds settings are programmed for a selected run time). Please review the manual for additional information, if necessary. Thank you for the question!

Yes, if you upgrade to a Prologic, Aqualogic or the Omnilogic Hayward control systems they will all be able to control the Tristar VS or ECO VS pumps.

I have a shaft seal leak on a 1 HP, Pentair single speed pump. I have several questions about this. 1. Should I repair or replace with a new variable speed pump ? 2. Should I stay Pentair or switch to Hayward or even to Jandy ? 3. The pool is a salt pool, about 12,000 gallons. I was told that variable speed pumps can also increase the life of your salt cell ??
Thanks, Bob
Reply
Hi Bob, If it were me I would replace with a variable speed motor and keep your Pentair pump housing. Typically a Pentair pump will use the Century ECM16SQU Variable Speed 1.65 HP Replacement Motor if you could email us a few photos of your current pump we could let you know if you need to replace any other parts, please email those to upload@inyopools.com I have not heard that a variable speed pump will extend the life of your salt cell.

I have an 18,000 gallon pool. Originally, it had a Hayward TriStar 1.5HP, that was replaced with a Hayward RS 1.0HP. Additionally, there is a Polaris 280 with 0.75HP booster, which powers the cleaner as well as two Polaris Sheer Descent waterfalls. The pool does fine with this setup, even with the reduction in HP of the original circulatory pump, which is now failing. Will this pump be suitable in my application? Will this pump at full power eliminate the need for the booster pump?
Reply
Hi, Dennis A. The Polaris 280 requires a Booster Pump, however, this pump will be able to operate the two Polaris Sheer Descent waterfalls. If you replace the Polaris 280 with the Polaris 360, then you will be able to eliminate the booster pump.
Reply
Ok, thanks for your response. I will be placing my order soon. Will probably just hold off on the Polaris until the booster pump fails completely. One more question; I currently use a dual Intermatic timer box with freeze protection. Does this pump have freeze protection, or will I need to continue using the external timer setup that I currently have?
Reply
Yes this pump does have a freeze protection feature built into the controller.

I have an 18,000 gal pool with a Hayward SP2610X15 Super Pump 1.5 HP Pool Pump on it. The motor was replaced 2 years ago, and since then has started leaking. I want to replace it with a VS pump, but not sure exactly which one would be best. I am working with making the backyard fully automated but doing it piece by piece. Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

So you can use the Super Pump Variable Speed Pump model W3SP2603VSP however those are special order with an approximate lead time of 2-3 weeks or you can use the model PL2606 which will have extra strength in case you need it in the future. If you use the PL2606 then you will also need the automation adapter.

I currently have a Hayward 2hp Pump with 2” intake and outlets, it runs the Kreepy Crawley and circulates the water in a 20000 gal. pool. I live in California and need a compliant pump. What would you recommend?
Yes, based on the information provided this unit would work.

Hi, John. This TriStar VS Pump - W3SP3202VSP is a great option. It is energy-efficient and will be a drop-in replacement.

I have a Hayward Sp4007ns pump which is 3/4hp is it worth the cost to replace it with a variable or just replace the motor. This pump(2007) has the old 4 snap lock on the input output lines, so changing pumps requires additional work but if there is reasonable power savings. i'm all for it.

Hi, Jack. In order to determine if this pump will save you money, you will need to calculate the Total Dynamic Head (TDH) of your pool. The use that data with the TriStar Performance Curve to determine the max operating RPM's.

Hi, I have a 2HP single speed pump. What size variable speed will do the correct size?
Reply
Hi Ed, With the increased efficiency in the newer pumps typically you can go with a 1.65 HP Variable Speed Pump as a replacement for a 2 HP Single Speed Pump. Our suggestion would be the Waterway Defender 1.65 HP Variable Speed Pump.

I have an older Hayward Northstar pump, #SP4007X10NS. It has a SP1607Z1MNS Northstar motor which is 1.0 HP on the label with SF listed as 1.4. So either 3/4 HP x 1.4 = 1.05 THP or 1.0 x 1,4 = 1.4 THP. I'm not sure how that works. All fittings are 2". Will this W3SP3202VSP pump work as a replacement for what I have now? The HP is somewhat higher at 1.85 THP but I guess that could be limited with the variable speed feature. Are there also less expensive models that might work?
Hi, Seran. This Hayward TriStar VS Pump - W3SP3202VSP can be used as a replacement. An alternate option is the Waterway Power Defender 165 VS Pump - PD-VSC165.

Hi, Jimmy. Yes, this Hayward TriStar VS Pump - W3SP3202VSP is a suitable replacement.

The motor on my Hayward NorthStar SP4010X15 pump froze up today. Can this variable speed pump directly replace the NorthStar without having to modify the inlet and outlet piping? The pump dimensions seem to be different, lower and shorter.
Reply
Hi Randy, Yes this would be a suitable replacement for your Hayward SP4010X15 pump in regards to water output. You are correct the ports are not in the exact same position as your old pump so some re-plumbing will be required. Unfortunately, there is not a pump that has the exact same port location as your old SP4010X15 pump. The Waterway 1.4 HP Variable Speed Pump does have adjustable bases so it does allow you to align the ports up with your old port location, we can't guarantee this will line up exactly but it should make the plumbing easier.

I currently have a 1.5 HP Hayward Super pump that is about 10 years old. My pool is 25,000 gallons would this be a good replacement
Reply
The Hayward TriStar VS Pump - W3SP3202VSP is a wonderful pump, it is heavy duty. The current Super pump is not considered heavy duty and it may be too much pump, however, it could also serve you well as being more efficient by upgrading. We will need the filter model number to verify that it can handle the upgraded flow rates up to 130GPM. The TriStar VS only operates with 230 Volts, it will not work with 115V.

I have a hayward 2 hp super pump ,if i were to replace it with a SP3202VSP should I bypass the Intermatic timer ? The timer only operates the pump .

I would suggest leaving it as it can act as a local bypass to the pump if you ever need to cut off the circuit while you're in the area.

Hi Joseph, this Hayward Tristar pool pump will include, the SPX3200WF base, and unions that can be used with 2 and 2.5-inch plumbing. Any other bushings or fittings will need to be purchased separately. Your local hardware store should carry those.

I have a 56K gallon pool with an almost 9 yr old Hayward SP3215EE that just failed. Looking at either a SP3210X15 or SP3202VSP. May need to upgrade voltage. Recommendation?
Reply
Hello John. The direct replacement for the SP3215EE is the Hayward TriStar 1-1/2 HP, Energy Efficient, Full Rated Pump - W3SP3215EE. (THP 2.4) (120GPM @ 50 ft of head) Hayward TriStar 1 1/2 HP, Max Rated Pump - W3SP3210X15 (THP 1.85) (100GPM @ 50 ft of head) Hayward TriStar VS Pump - W3SP3202VSP (THP 1.85) (100GPM @ 50 ft of head @ 3450RPM) Supply Voltage for all 3 pumps is rated 230V +/- 10%. The W3SP3215EE 208V supply voltage rating indicates the motor will operate at 208V, not 10% under. If the pool requires 120GPM the W3SP3215EE is the correct replacement. For energy efficiency, the W3SP3202VSP is the correct choice if pool features don't require 120GPM.

Can I replace my Hayward SP4015X20NS pump with this Hayward W3SP3202VS? Would it be a compatible replacement?
Reply
Hello Tony. The Hayward TriStar VS Pump - W3SP3202VSP would be a compatible replacement for the Hayward NorthStar model SP4015X20NS. Comparing the Performance Data for the two pumps at 50 feet of head the NorthStar has a Flow rate of 119 GPM, the TriStar 105 GPM. If the pool features (waterfall, lazy river, 2 story solar heating panels) do not require 119 GPM the transition will present no issue.

I have a ~ 15 yr old 1HP Super Pump for a 20K gallon in-ground pool with 2 return lines and no water features. Model # is C48KK2N143B1. I feel the pump could be on its last leg and looking at what the best drop-in VS replacement would be for when the time comes so that we can save on our electric bill. Would the this TriStar W2SP3202VSP be an appropriate drop-in replacement, or would another option be better/more efficient for this purpose? TYIA
Hello. Referencing the Hayward Super Pump C48K2N143B1 Performance Data, this pump was rated 50 GPM at 50ft. of Head. The Hayward Super Pump VS Variable Speed Pump 230V - W3SP2603VSP is rated 56GPm @ 50ft of Head at 3450RPM. The Hayward Super Pump VS intake and discharge ports are in identical positions. There would be minimal plumbing alterations, none if the original Super Pump is installed with unions. The Hayward TriStar VS Pump - W3SP3202VSP is rated 103GPM @ 50ft of Head at 3450RPM. The TriStar installation would definitely require plumbing changes. Either VS Pump would be an acceptable replacement.
