When should I change the sand in my filter?
Reply
You should change the sand in your filter every 5-7 years. You can generally tell that it is time if your pool water is not as clear as it normally is or when you notice the interval between backwashes is shorter. You can use > this guide to walk you through it.

How often do I have to replace the sand in my filter? What is normal operating pressure?
Reply
On a "fresh start-up" a filter would operate anywhere between 10-20 psi. As a general rule of thumb you only want to backwash when the pressure increases 8-10 psi. You want to make certain that the pump is being turned off whenever you move the handle on the valve. Once backwashing is complete (3-5 minutes), you can switch to the rinse option to re-settle the sand bed. Sand will typically last 5-7 years. Premature backwashing will wear down the size of the sand which will cause difficulties such as cloudy water and higher operating pressures.

Does the filter come with sand? Should I buy regular sand?

The filter does not come with sand. You can use a synthetic sand or a No. 20 silica sand.

How do I determine what size sand filter I need for my 24,000 gal inground pool?
Reply
The pool filter has to be compatible with the size of your motor. If it is too small, the pump will try to push more water through the filter than it can handle. We also recommend buying a filter one size larger than required for a buffer. Also the larger filter will last longer and require less backwashing. If you have a 1.5 HP pump we would recommend a S310T filter. If 2.0 HP, a S360T.

my pump is1hp.on my multiport valve it reads 75 75 gpm.I intend to change entire filter.does the filter come with a base. What would be your advice regarding size of fiter and middle of the rd. on your price list.I think the pool holds about 40.000 glsthank you.

Hi Jim, The Hayward 27" Top Mount Sand Filter (S270T) does come with base, and would be a suitable size for your pool. However if you have 2" plumbing I would recommend the Hayward 27" Top Mount Sand Filter (S270T2) or go with the Hayward 30" Top Mount Sand Filter (S310T2). A larger filter will be beneficial in the long run.

Which Hayward Sand Filter is optimal for my 33000 gallon in ground pool?
Reply
This will be based on the feet of head you have at your pool, and the pump model used. As long as the filter can handle the gallons per minute rating of the pump, including the factor of feet of head then you can choose many different model filters. If you need to send further information to us to properly size your system please refer to our contact and support portion of our web site. You can email us there with further system specifications.

what would be the largest hp motor I could use with this filter. my pool is approx.55000 gallons
Reply
That filter has a max flow rate of 74 gallons per minute so I would need to know what your total resistance is, which is the distance from the pump to your main drain. I will also need to know what model your pump is that the motor is going on so I can figure out what the highest horsepower you can go.

8,000 gallon pool installed 10 years ago with a SD80 Pentair Sand Dollar filter. Changed filter 4 years ago because original filter sprang a leak at seam on top. Now the second SD80 has done the same thing and needs changing. Is this a general flaw with Pentair and would a Hayward filter do better?
Reply
Hi Larry, I can not confirm if that's a general flaw with the Pentair SD80 filters. You can replace it with a Hayward filter but can't say that the Hayward filters are of higher quality.

Hi Stan, Yes this would be a great replacement for your Tahitian hr25. You will have some re-plumbing to do but the filter will work great for you.

I have a 16x32x6 inground pool and currently need to replace my original filter, Jacuzzi Laser L250C-7c, 350 lbs sand. Is the Hayward S270T a comparable cross reference for performance? Or should I be looking at a different Hayward filter model? Thanks!

Hi Steve, Yes the S270T would be comparable in performance to the Jacuzzi Laser L250C-7c, actually a little better.

Hello, my question is my pool is about 22,000 gallons, I just purchased the PL1601 pump, is this a suitable filter for my set up or can I go smaller? Also any filter recommendations you may want to add. Thanks.
Reply
Hi, Al. This filter will be sufficient for you size pool as long as the PL1601 pump does not exceed the max flow rate of 74 GPM. The pump's flow rate will be required to determine the best filter that will meet your pool needs.

I have an inground +/- 10,000 gals. swimming pool. I would like to know if you could recommend me what type of Sand filter can I get for my pool.
Thank you.

Hi, Joe. Unfortunately, without knowing the flow rate of your pump, we're unable to recommend a specific size filter. Please review our How To Size a Pool Filter guide for more info.

currently have s200 filter with sp3007x10az pump. What variable speed pump would you recommend with this filter. pool 19X39 oval, estimating 70 feet of head pressure, guessing around 33k gallons.

I have an above ground pool 30,000 gallons. I have a 1HP pump that is 1 year old. My filter and pump are about 10 feet away from my pool. I am using 1.5inch PVC plumbing. Will this filter work well for my setup, and what is the 8 hour turnover time? Thank you. Lets assume 40feet head

Hi Josh, Yes this would be a great filter for your set up and would be what we suggest. This filter can handle 74 Gallon Per Minute (G.P.M) or 35,520 Gallons in 8 hours.

I need replace/repair my pump which has been a 2HP Pentair Superflo. Is this an appropriate complimentary piece with this filter for a 16/32/5 lazy L shaped pool approximately 50 feet from the pump? Or need I downsize so as not to burn out the pump?

Hi Joseph, so there are few variables to consider when sizing a filter for a swimming pool. Here is a guide that we put together called "How To Size a Pool Filter" that should help.

I received my 27 in Hayward filter tank with 2 in valve from the Estes freight line. Is the 2 in valve in the box, or does it ship separately?

Hi Thomas, this Hayward 27 inch sand filter comes with a 1.5 inch top mount multiport valve.

I am replacing my 24 in. hayward sand filter (1.5 in) with your 27 in. Hayward sand filter (the 1.5 in.). This will require some plumbing adjustment but what I particularly want to to do is replumb with connectors and not hard plumb like my pool guy did a decade ago. What connectors should I use and for a difference in height is it better to use elbows and pvc or can I just use flexible pvc instead? Thanks for your help!

Hi Heather, Thanks for the questions! I would suggest these 1.5" Quick Disconnect Unions for this filter to allow for easy access. We did put together this Video on Should I Plumb My Pool With Flexible Plumbing which you might find helpful.
