The Pentair Rainbow 300 series is a commercial chemical feeder that is very durable and highly reliable. Each 300-29X model feeder is equipped with a heavy duty control valve (1/2 inch) and tubing that optimizes flow and erosion to provide larger amounts of sanitizer for commercial applications.

Is there a feedback mechanism that tells the unit the chlorine balance in the pool? Is this a way for me to automate addition of clorine to keep it always at the correct level? Or, just another place to put the tab aside from the the drain basket?
Reply
There is a dial on this unit which has a setting from 1-10 If you set the dial on 1 it will be letting the least amount of chlorine to the pool and if you have it set at 10 this would send the most amount of chlorine to the pool. So you can automate the feed of chlorine to the pool but you will still need to manually test your water. We do not recommend placing tablets in the skimmer basket because this high concentration of chlorine goes directly back to your pump and can cause corrosion to your pool equipment. If you do not go with the automatic chlorinator we would recommend at least going with one of our floating chlorinators so you do not damage your equipment you may view our floating chlorinators here http://www.inyopools.com/chlorinators_floating.aspx

What is the difference between an inline and offline chlorinator?
Reply
An inline chlorinator would be plumbed directly inline with the plumbing. For an existing pool, this would mean a section of pipe would need to be cut out to install the chlorinator. An offline chlorinator attaches to existing plumbing by chlorinator tubing (holes would be drilled into existing pipe to attach the tubing.)

I am looking for a heavy duty chlorinator after going through many Hayward units. Can this model be used with a 25k gallon pool and is it built better than simply the 300. Thanks.

The 300-29X would not be built any stronger than the 300 the only difference is that the 300-29 has an extension so it can hold more tablets than the 300. I do like the Rainbow 300 better than Hayward Chlorinator as it seems to be a little more durable.

If I take the flow control dial out of the system, I get more flow than if I have the dial in the system and set to maximum. Is this normal? Or is the control dial supposed to have a level of restriction even at maximum setting? If I set the dial to maximum, should I have the same flow rate as if the dial wasn't even in the system?
Reply
Robert, The flow control does put restriction on the flow through the chlorinator even if you have the dial set to max.

I have several of the free standing Rainbow chlorinator's installed on my pool route pools. The last couple of years, I have had to replace dozens of the check valves; often times weekly because the little ball jams. This is costing me a small fortune. Has the manufacturer changed in the last couple of years? I would not use this chloriniator if their was something else. I have not heard much good about the Hayword chlorinator either. Any ideas?

Hi, Don. I'm not aware of any changes made to the check valve used in the Rainbow 300 chlorinator. I' not sure you'll have better luck with the Hayward CL220 but it might be work looking into. Other than that I do not have any other ideas or suggestions.

Screwdriver, Socket Set, wire cutter to cut plastic tube
Quite easy. Removed old parts and installed new parts exactly. After removing old hoses, cleaned PVC pipes and installed new tubing. All parts cam with the new chlorinator. Checked for leaks, tightened everything, and enjoyed new chlorinator.

Pros: Plenty of tablet space, downstream of pump and filter, not in strainers.
Cons: No 'tablet level indicator', Tall and can be knocked over in pump house if not fastened to floor.
Great Idea! Using the tablets in the Offline Chlorinator keeps them out of the skimmer strainers and prevents heavy chlorination on the suction side of the pumps where scale and corrosion can be a problem. No more will the kids pull the tablets out thinking that they aren't supposed to be there. Easy adjustment but no level indicator.

(5 out of 5 stars) Great Chlorinator
Reviewed By: Al B. from Fairhope, AL ()
Pros: Simple construction, easy to install
Cons: Wear a mask when checking tab level!
This chlorinator was shipped very quickly and was the best price of any out there that I could find. It is a very simple design which is good and was a cinch to install. I bought this because I am converting my inground pool from a salt system to the Nature Express mineral system. I was a little worried that the "offline" chlorinator would create too many sources for leaks but the line connections are very solid and seated without nary a drip. I have had this installed for about a month and a half and have only refilled it once. It holds 29 3" tabs. Now that it is cooler I have the dial turned down to 2 and the Chlorine levels are still right on. (13k gal) I would recommend this chlorinator to everyone.

(4 out of 5 stars) Off-line feeder
Reviewed By: Tiki Bob from Ramrod Key, FL ()
Pros: Don't know yet
Cons: Don't know yet
This is replacing my second on-line feeder that failed. Off-line seems to be a more reliable and efficient approach than on-line...we will see. So far it is working flawlessly. I did drill and tap 1/2 inch pipe threads into the PVC lines rather than use the straps so the installation really looks neat. Delivery was fast.

(5 out of 5 stars) Best Chlorinator that I have ever used.
Reviewed By: Wendi S. from Ashland City, TN ()
Pros: Well made, easy to adjust and responds to adjustments in a short period of time
Cons: I haven't found any yet
We bought this, a few weeks ago and the first thing I noticed on removing it from the box was how well made it is. I had my chlorine up and adjusted within days. I am using it on a 33 ft round above ground pool. I have tried many other chlorinators and this is the best so far. You can still use your 1" tabs which are more efficient than 3" and you don't have to spend all of the extra money for a cartridge of 1" tabs which are expensive. We had to turn it off for a weekend and I thought it would take days again to get the chlorine back up, but my levels were back to normal within 24 hours. I highly recommend this product.

(5 out of 5 stars) Better designed than Hayward
Reviewed By: Nilcam from Cincinnati, Ohio ()
Pros: Reasonably well made and designed
Cons: The tubing wants to crease and is difficult to route
I replaced a Hayward unit that for one reason or another needed replacing every 2 years or so. This one is far beefier and appears better designed in every respect and is able to output more chlorine in less time. It is also drainable with the optional drain valve and can be charged with the pump running and can be drained in the winter so it does not have to be taken inside. Improve the tubing and this unit would be near perfect.
