when you snap on the nozzle part of the jet to the bottom, is it water tight in the ball swivel?

Hi Phil, Yes, the nozzle just snaps into the body which creates a water tight seal

Is the base of the screw on take a 1 1/16 wrench to tighten. All of the ones on my pool are that. I had a replacement jet nozzle that was larger than that.

Do I need the black housing/casing or can I install to pipes without it. I plan to place them behind a retaining wall just to fill pool water up.

We do not. This is the only way the nozzles are available; attached to the threaded piece.
