When should I change the sand in my filter?
Reply
You should change the sand in your filter every 5-7 years. You can generally tell that it is time if your pool water is not as clear as it normally is or when you notice the interval between backwashes is shorter. You can use > this guide to walk you through it.

We are starting up for season. Says to open manual air bleed then set on backwash. Where is air bleed located?

how do I identify the inlet and outlet port on a pentair sanddollar filter

Hi, The multi-port valve on the Pentair Filter - SD-80 Sand Dollar W/ 6 Way Valve will be labeled "PUMP" for the inlet, "RETURN" for the outlet and "WASTE" for backwashing.

Is the sd80 one size?...like 36" or does it come in different sizes. Thanks

Hello, Sarah. The Pentair Sand Dollar Filters are offered in five different sizes. The Model numbers are SD35, SD40, SD60, SD70, and the SD80. They also offer a Special Order item SD80 2" part number 145386. If you need a 36" Sand Filter I best recommend the Triton II TR140 MODEL# 140243 Side Mount Sand Filter with the 2" High Flow Multiport Valve w/ Plumbing (sold separately) for Triton & Quad DE Filters PART# 261050. What size filter for 26,000 gallon pool. I am getting ready to order one. Thanks

Hello, Jim. The SD-80 Sand Dollar W/ 6 Way Valve PART#145333 is a great choice for your size pool. It is best to check the flow rate of GPM (Gallons Per Minute) that your pump provides, to ensure it does not exceed the design flow rate for this filter, which is, 75GPM. We have a Pentair SD80 filter that has developed a crack in the seam. Can we replace with a Hayward S244T model ? We have a 26,000 gallon in ground pool.

You can absolutely replace the SD80 with the S244T. You would most likely need to do replumb the piping, but the the filter is enough to filter your pool adequately.

I have a 3 year old Pentair SD80 filter that has developed a crack in the seam and is leaking water. Is there anyway to correct this without replacing the filter?

Hi, Stephen. Repairing the tank doesn't always hold up, we recommend replacing it.

Hi,
We have a hairline leak in the seam of our SD80 tank. It's almost 4 years old. This appears to be a common issue with this unit. Before I replace it, is there any measures I can take to prevent this on a new filter? Also, is this the average life we can expect on it? If so, are there any others on the market with a better expected lifespan?
Reply
I see the hairline cracks and leaks mainly when the filter is not sized properly and cannot handle the flow rate that the pump is pumping out. What is you pump model and the distance from your pump to your skimmers so I can calculate your flow rate?

I have a SD 80 and it is leaking around the handle. I am going to replace the multi port valve but I see it has 1.5 inch ports and all of my pipes are 2 inch. Did they over pipe for the SD 80? I appreciate any help.

Hi, Mark. Use the info in our PVC Pool Pipe Dimensions to confirm the size of your plumbing. If you do have 2" pipes then you will have to use a reducer fitting to go from 2" to 1.5".

I have a Pentair SD-80 pool filter and I am seeing a decent amount of sand returning to the pool. What causes this and more importantly, how do I fix it?
Reply
Very often the cause of this issue is that the laterals and or standpipe in the filter have gone bad. We recommend to inspect those parts and also inspect the multi-port valve gasket as well for that can also contribute to the issue.

We just replaced our old filter with a new Pentair SD80. I need a fitting for the diverter valve for the waste hose. Do you sell those? My old filter only had 2 hookups for the hoses. The backwash hose was smaller & held on with a clamp.
Reply
Unfortunately, we do not carry those types of fittings but what you can use is an MIPT x Socket fitting that you can locate at any local hardware store. Just match the diameter of the discharge port on the valve to the male side of the fitting. 1.5 or 2 inches are the most common.

I have a SD 80 and replaced the sand a year or so ago. Started up this year, backwashed and then a sound and now sand blows back into the pool. I suspect a cracked lateral or standpipe. BUT when in recirculate mode, water slowly leaks out the backwash pipe. Perhaps some thing with the 6 way valve?

Hi, Rick. You do have an issue with either the standpipe or laterals and the valve. You may need to overhaul your filter based on how old the filter is. Use the Replacement parts for Pentair Sand Dollar Filter link to locate the replacement parts for your model filter.

This is for the Sand Dollar SD 80 thread. Can the multi valve be rebuilt? I've pulled the valve, no obvious external damage but when on Recirculate mode a stream of water the size of your pinkie finger comes out the outlet.

I'm in the SD 80 thread and considering if I should replace the whole filter. I I'm hoping you could give me an estimate of flow rate.

Hi, Rick. Using the info provided I'm unable to provide you with flow info. If your pump still works, you can use our How To Measure Total Dynamic Head With Gauges guide to calculate your head. Once you get that we can provide you with the data.

do you need to releive air pressure when starting up sd 80 filter? Just bought a new one and the start up instruction says to releive the air pressure with pressure relief valve. There wasn't one in the bag. do I need to buy one?

Hi, Bob. The Air Bleed Valve is located on the bottom right of the pump connection port on the valve.

I looked... sorry no valve there. I guess I'll call pentair and see what they say. Thanks

I'm thinking of replacing my cartridge filter with the pentair sd 80. I've heard glass media is less maintenance. What are your thoughts? Also is a de filter better?

Hi Garry, there are a few filter media substitutes that can help some but nothing that significant. Here is a guide that we put together called "Which Pool Filter Is Best?" that better explains the differences with pros and cons.

I have the SD80 with 1.5 inch lines, all other lines are 2 inch. My heat pump has to have 30gpm and the maximum flow my 1.5hp pump can maintain is 42gpm. How much gain, if any would I get with a DE filter & 2 valve.
Reply
Hi Rick, this would ultimately depend on the model D.E. filter that you end up going with however in general the flow rates for D.E. filters in comparison to smaller sand filters are significantly more.

I have an SD80 that is about 11 years old. It has developed a crack in the multiport valve housing near the psi guage. Do you advise that I replace the housing, or am I toward the end of the life of the entire unit?
Reply
Hi Matt, yes you would need to replace the entire valve or at the least the valve base which is most often most of the cost of an entirely new one. Could you provide the specific model of the valve? That model number should be on the label on the top of the valve or if not legible could you send us a few photos of the valve? One of the entire valve and another of the top of it looking down on to it? To supply photos simply click the reply link below and upload your photos. Once we get those photos we can make the proper recommendation.

I have a SD 80 and the tank is now spewing a leak along the seam of the tank. The valve, laterals etc. seem fine and I replaced the media a while back. Can I buy just the tank?
Reply
Hi Rick, unfortunately, the tank for the Pentair Sand Dollar sand filter model SD80 is no longer manufactured with no listed replacement. You may be able to locate a used one somewhere or maybe consider replacing the entire filter. The Waterway sand filter model FS02629 is a suitable replacement as well.
