What is the difference between the Aqua Trol HP and RJ?
Reply
The HP (Hose Pipe) version is installed in the hoses/pipes next to your pool filter, where the RJ (Return Jet) version the cell is mounted directly to the return jet on the side of your pool. Both units work exactly the same but you would need to determine which one would be easier to install from a plumbing stand point. You may view or purchase any of the Aqua Trol units through this link http://www.inyopools.com/sanitizers_aquatrol.aspx

I see you have a couple salt chlorine generators for above ground pools. Can you tell me what you would recommend and why?
Reply
I would suggest the AquaTrol Salt Chlorine Generator as it is much higher quality product than the ChlorEase. The AquaTrol has much more titanium coating on the blades of the salt cell which makes the salt cell last much longer, so you should get about 4-6 years out of the salt cell on the AquaTrol. The AquaTrol comes in several models first you can get in an HP model which would be installed in the plumbing next to your pool pump or you can get it in an RJ model which would hook up directly to the return jet on your pool (Both models perform identically, you would just need to choose the one that would work best for your application - the RJ is quite a bit less and operates the same) Lastly the AquaTrol is available with a standard 3 prong plug or a Twist Lock depending on the electrical receptacle you have available to you. You may view or purchase any of the AquaTrols here http://www.inyopools.com/sanitizers_aquatrol.aspx

I am confused. The photos all show the generator and the turbo cell as a package. Does the turbo cell come WITH the generator or is this the price of JUST the generator and then you purchase the turbo cell separately? Thanks
Reply
This price is for the complete AquaTrol with Power Supply and Turbo Cell.

I received the AquaTrol RJ Chlorine Generator but there is no flow switch. Is there supposed to be one?
Reply
According to the AQTROLRJ AquaTrol RJ Chlorine Generator owner's manual, return jet units (-RJ option) will NOT have a flow switch. The manual further states that the RJ installation "does NOT require a flow switch--however it is very important that the cell be mounted vertically directly below the return jet in order to allow the gases produced in the cell to naturally dissipate in the pool."

How much salt does the system require?
Reply
The Aqua Trol works best with approximately 3200 ppm salt, which is roughly the equivalent to a teaspoon per gallon. However, the Aqua Trol® will operate with salt levels anywhere from 2700 ppm to 3400 ppm.
Reply
Do I have to use the pump timer? Can I run my pump 24 hours a day?
Reply
The Aqua Trol will not generate chlorine if when the pump timer is off. If you want to run the pump continuously, either pull out all the trippers on the timer or else put the manual switch on the timer (small button near the center of the timer) into the "1" position.

Is cell direction important?
Reply
The cell can be mounted in any manner necessary (EXCEPT FOR TROL RJ UNITS – THAT CELL MUST BE MOUNTED TO THE SIDE OF THE POOL AT THE RETURN JET) be it horizontal or vertical, and the cord can be mounted upstream or down stream, the cell is non directional.
Reply
Are the units safe to use with pool covers?
Reply
Yes but, pool covers should be removed every few days to keep the corrosive gases from building under the cover causing corrosion or other forms of damage to the pool equipment.
Reply
Is the flow switch direction important?
Reply
Yes. The flow switch must be mounted so the arrows on the switch it’s self go in the direction of flow. Also, the flow switch requires 12 inches of straight pipe before the water enters the part to ensure there is no turbulence inside the switch compartment causing the switch to display “no flow” in error. Also, the switch needs to see at least 11GPM of flow to properly close the switch.

I have recently moved from a home with an above ground pool to one with an inground pool. I took my Aqua-Trol RJ with me. Pool capacity of the two pools are roughly the same. Is there a reason why I can't use the Aqua-Trol RJ in an inground application?
Reply
The RJ model is not recommended for inground pools because it does not have a flow switch. You would run the risk of the cell/pvc exploding due to a build up of gas. We would recommend contacting Hayward before attempting to install this model.

for an above ground pool. My old 12 year aqua trol finally burned up, like toast. i bought a new one but came with a flow sensor. The only thing i did is to replace the control box and replaced the cell. the only way it generates is when i hook up the flow sensor line to the control panel and hold the sensor in. is there any way to eliminate the flow sensor or do i have to plumb in the the flow sensor since its up and running, and is it safe to keep it held in at all times
Reply
Hi Walt, If you have the AquaTrol RJ Chlorine Generator a flow switch is not needed. If you have the AquaTrol HP Chlorine Generator the flow sensor is required and will have to installed as recommend in the AquaTrol Owners Manual. It is not safe to keep the flow sensor held in at all times.

Installing this on my new pool.. Can I plumb it into the jet without plugging it in so I can get the water tested where it needs to be then plug it in? or should I let the pump circulate the water with out it even having any of salt system installed ?
Reply
HI John, You can have the unit installed but with in 24 hrs get the water balanced to the point where you can have the unit start generating chlorine for your pool.
Reply
hi, the aquatrol RJ doesn't have the flow switch, does that mean it will continue generating even if there's no water flowing?
thanks
Reply
Hi Paul, That's correct but you will have to set the unit timer to turn on/off with the pool pump.
Reply
Will this generator work on in ground pools
Reply
No, unfortunately this unit is for above ground pools only. You run the risk of cell/pvc exploding because it is not equipped with a flow switch. We recommend contacting Hayward before attempting to install this model on an in ground pool.

Hi, on what should the machine be mounted? What size of wood? Thanks I'm assuming this must be near pool as well?
Reply
Hi Jo, The RJ cell does not have to be mounted to anything once connected to the return jet fitting. You can reference the AquaTrol Owners Manual for installation instructions.

Hi I have an Aqua Trol RJ and the salt reading is showing 4800 -5000ppm and the salt test strips that were supplied with the system are only showing a 4 which is 1350ppm. Can you help me ?
Reply
Hi, Steven. I would recommend that you take one cup or larger sample of your pool water and the cell to a local pool store that can test both. You will want an independent salt reading as test strips that have been unused for longer than one year are far from accurate. You will want to have the cell tested to see if the cell is functioning properly as well. If the cell fails, you will need to have the cell replaced.

I have an aqua trol generator and had to replace my T-5 cell. The local distributors did not have a t-5 so i went with the T-9 cell. It now shows that the salt level is high (4500) when the pool store tested it and it showed 2800. Does the unit have to be programmed for the T-9 cell?
Reply
Hi, The TCELL9 is not compatible with the AquaTrol unit so it's not going to wok correctly.

i have no lights on panel 120 ac going in is ok testing the transformer i have 120 ac in what should come out dc ? fuse on inside is good
Reply
Hi, Steve. When testing the transformer the Blue & White wires and the Violet & Gray wires, the readings should be 2.0- 2.9 Ohms output.

I currently have an aqua trol AQ-TROL-RJ on an above ground 18 foot round pool. What Hayward sytem will replace this?
Reply
Hi, Gooch. This Hayward AquaTrol RJ unit is the only replacement available.

Power and generating leds go of after a few seconds, no reading of ppm , can I get some help
Reply
Hi Jeff, It sounds to me as your Main PCB Board has gone bad I would suggest replacing this Aqua Trol RJ PCB Board if you have the RJ model where you salt cells hooks to your return jet on the wall of the pool. If you have the AquaTrol HP model where the cell hooks into your hoses or pipe by your equipment then you would need this AquaTrol HP PCB Board

I'm a bit confused on the HP vs. RJ models. I understand one is inline next to the filter and one connects directly to the return, but can both be plumbed with 1.5" pvc?
Reply
Both the AquaTrol RJ and HP models provide the necessary plumbing components for either 2" rigid PVC piping installation or 1½ - 1¼" flexible hose installation. If you want to plumbing with rigid 1.5" pipe you can use this 2" x 1.5" reducer bushing to do so.

Hello
I have the Aquatrol RJ system and I had a connection issue with my DSP board. I removed and cleaned my contacts and the connection now seems stable. My issue is my no flow LED stays on therefore not allowing my cell to turn on. According to the diagnostic manual, the model number displayed should be AL-7 but mine is showing AL-0. Can you change this setting?
Thanks
Tom
Reply
Tom, While AL-0 is one the display, switching from auto to super chlorinate then back to auto should allow you to cylcle through the product names to change it back.

I have an aqua trol rj, the board has been reading 3100 and the a few hours later will read 2500. It does this every day for about two weeks. What could be the problem?
Reply
Hi, Joe. The issue is the Main PCB - GLX-PCB-TROL-RJ, it will need to be replaced

I reviewed the installation manual but I don't see a clear answer. I am interested in the RJ unit. Do you have to mount it to the pool somehow? Or does it just hang there? I currently have a flex hose from my filter to my return. I'm not sure if the salt generator will perfectly vertical if it just hangs on the return hose. But I also don't know how I'm supposed to mount it to the pool wall without damaging the liner and causing a leak. Please help!
Reply
Hi, James. This AquaTrol RJ unit includes all of the hardware to properly install this unit. The elbow will screw into your return jet wall fitting. Then you're able to install the cell. If it's installed properly it will not ruin your liner. You must have a steel wall above ground pool.

does the aqua trol rj need to be mounted vertically. my pump is too far from the vertical section of the return line for the wiring to reach. Can it be mounted vertically and then the lines run back down to reach the pool
Reply
Hi, Dave. Yes, the AquaTrol RJ Chlorine Generator has to be mounted vertically. I would recommend that you use the AquaTrol HP Chlorine Generator.

Can I mount RJ cell vertical and below return valve but have it 2 feet away from opening

Hello, We would recommend installing this horizontal. Here is the manual on how to install this. http://images.inyopools.com/cloud/documents/aquatrol-manual.pdf

We have the AQTROLRJ salt generator. We were checking it yesterday and it is showing zero on salt level and the check salt and inspect cell lights were flashing. We tried holding in the button to reset it nothing. We unplug it and plugged it back in, checked the filter. We manually checked the salt level and it shows we have salt. We have only had this unit since March 28,2018. What is our next step with this unit?

Ruth, we are sorry to hear about the issues you are having with your Goldline Controls AquaTrol RJ Chlorine Generator system, however, we are not certified by Hayward to troubleshoot this device. We suggest contacting Hayward and speaking to their technicians directly. They can be reached by calling 800.429.9273.

We are thinking about converting our pool to the salt water system, I have a couple of questions. 1. Can this system hook up to a swimpro pump system? 2. We also have the carbon filters and will this be ok? 3. Are the only chemicals you have to buy is ph down and shock? 4. Do I still put the floater in the pool for the tabs? I hope I am making the right decision because I wanting to save some money this year. Thanks.

Yes, you can still use this system with your model Swimpro cartridge filter, you will still need to maintain all chemistry points recommended to monitor for a swimming pool however as long as the salt system is working well you should not need any shock or chlorine tablets in a floater.

Is this model 220v capable? Does it have the twist lock connector on the bottom for the pump? Thanks
Reply
Hello Paul, so these models are designed for above ground pools which most commonly are 110-120 voltage and does not have the twist lock feature. The model W3AQ-TROL-RJ-T does however have the twist lock feature.

I purchased this product a 2 months ago and now it is not working. Hayward wants the serial number. I can not find it on the unit. Do you know where the sticker is located?
Reply
Hi Caitlyn, the serial number for the Hayward Aquatrol should be on the front door by the barcode.

Will this unit compatible with hayward maxflo variable speed 115v? Do I need to wire them together or can I run them separately?
Thank you in advance.
Reply
Hello Jon. The Hayward pool Products AquaTrol RJ Chlorine Generator is compatible with the Hayward MaxFlo VS 115Volt. Attached please find the Installation/Operation Manual for the AquaTrol RJ System, reference installation options. The AquaTrol can be wired in either configuration, however, the system will not generate chlorine without water circulation (safety feature). Aqua Trol

What is the recommended variable speed for this unit?
Reply
Hello Jon. The Hayward Pool Products AquaTrol RJ Chlorine Generator will operate with a wide variety of Variable Speed Pool Pumps. The Hayward AquaTrol will generate chlorine providing the minimum water flow requirement is met, "No Flo" LED Illuminated on the Control Panel identifies minimum flow requirement not met. The selection of a variable speed manufacturer/model is more directly related to pool size (gallons) and pool filtration needs.

We have a 27' round saltwater pool about 52 inches. I have read that you should get a chlorinator that can handle 1.5 to 2 times the size of the pool. Would this chlorinator be able to handle a pool of this size?
THanks
Reply
Your 27' pool can hold around 18,500 gallons. This W3AQ-TROL-RJ system would not be ideal. If you want a salt system, I'd suggest going with a 40,000 gallon system. They are designed for inground pools but you can use them on above ground pools if you switch your plumbing to hard PVC. I'd suggest the Pureline PL7700. Check out the owner's manual to see if this will work for your application.
