how is this put into pipe? hammer?

Hi, These return fittings will snap into the wall fitting, using a hammer can damage the fitting.

The washer is only sold with the fitting.

How do you remove the old fitting? What is the washer for and how do you install the new one?

This is a press fit jet internal, it will just pull straight out. The washer when installed behind the eyeball will just make it a smaller orifice opening.
