What is Service Factor?
Reply
Service Factor(SF) is a multiplier that when multiplied by the horsepower of the motor indicates the total permissible horsepower loading that may be carried when the motor is operating at rated voltage and frequency. The most important thing to remember when replacing a motor is that the replacement motor's horsepower times its service factor must be equal to or greater than the original motor's horsepower times its service factor. The Service Factor rating can be found on the motor label. See Step 4 of our How to Read a Pool Motor Label guide.

Why do I need to purchase a new shaft seal?
Reply
We strongly recommend replacing the shaft seal. The purpose of a shaft seal is to prevent water from running down the shaft of the motor and into the motor housing. Water will damage the bearings and cause the motor to fail. A new shaft seal should be installed whenever a motor is replaced. The motor manufacturer can deny the warranty if the motor fails to due to water damage from a faulty shaft seal. To find your shaft seal you will need to visit our Pool Pump Parts Page or the Spa Pump Parts Page and select your make and model.

Why should I purchase a Tune Up Kit?
Reply
A Tune Up Kit includes all of the essential replacement seals and gaskets for the pump. The seals and gaskets should be replaced when installing a new motor on your pump. New seals will prevent the pump from leaking water or losing the prime. A Tune Up Kit will protect your motor and ensure that the pump is working efficiently.

I'm trying to find a replacement motor for my pool pump but my model number doesn't match what you have listed as the model number. My model number begins with a C48 and yours begins with an SP. Please help.
Reply
What we have listed on our chart pages is the pump model number. The model number you have will just identify the motor. If you look on the plastic housing on the pump there should be a sticker which will have the pump model number. You can usually find this by the discharge port on the pump. Once you locate it you can choose the correct replacement motor. Be certain to change the shaft seal and gaskets as needed. You can use our >How to guide if you need help.

Replacing a pool pump motor is not as difficult as it seems. You can try looking here. If you need help figuring out what the information on your label means. If you are still having difficulty figuring it out you can call us at our toll free number or you can send us a photo of your motor label here.

Again, follow the video's available and any novice can do it. I choose to replace my pump seals also, so it took longer. Color coded wiring makes things simple, but shut down the main breaker for safety. Really just 4 bolts holding motor to the pump. Very pleased with the pump and seal kit.......of course replacing both 20 yr old parts increased the PSI in my system and the next weakest link was the filter which began leaking. I had to replace that also... Part of being a pool owner!

This is the easiest installation ever. Once you turn off the power to the pump, you have to remove the 2 screws holding the back cover on to disconnect the electrical. Then you have 4 more bolts that must be removed on the outside. Once those are off you unscrew the impeller, then you have 4 more bolts to remove. Once those are removed you can discard the old motor and replace it with the new motor. Simply attach the 4 bolts that you just removed and then screw the impeller back on. Then slide the impeller back into place and then re-attach using the first set of 4 bolts removed. Now you must re-connect the electric and the ground on top of the motor. Once that is done, simply turn the power back on and then the motor. Piece of cake.

I disconnected the power supply from my old pump motor. Removed the four 14mm bolts connecting the motor and impeller to the pump housing and removed it. I put the motor on a work bench. I then removed four other bolts that hold a cover for the pump impeller that bolt directly to the motor and removed the cover. The impeller threads onto the motor shaft and I removed it. I bought a seal kit and replaced the seals in the housing around the impeller and reassembled the motor and pump impeller. I installed the new motor with the old impeller and new seals back onto the pump housing. I also replaced a seal that goes between the pump and impeller and the actual pump housing. I reinstalled the wiring and started the pump. This motor is identical to the old gold colored AO Smith motor that I removed.

Cut off breaker at electrical panel.
Close water valves.
Remove motor electrical cover at back of motor.
Use multimeter to verify no power present.
Confirm whether existing electrical voltage is 230v or 115v (mine is 230v).
Unwire motor.
Remove four bolts that connect motor to pump.
Pull motor, with impeller still attached, away from pump housing. Carry motor/impeller to a workbench or area suitable for disassembly.
Slip a 7/16 wrench behind electrical components to prevent the motor shaft from turning.
Applying slight pressure, use the tongue and groove pliers to rotate the impeller off the threaded shaft.
This exposes 4 more bolts to release the remaining housing from the motor.
Replace seals (I used the tune-up kit).
Reverse process to install new motor.
Make sure new motor wiring matches the original setup for voltage (230v or 115).
Verify electrical connections.
Engage breaker.
Test pump function.

Simply put I called INYO Pools told them what I needed to do. They walked me through what they needed to know and helped me place the order. A few days later the replacement kit with all the seals arrived. Then I simply watched the INYOPools video on YouTube on how to replace my pump and followed along with their installation instruction on my phone. It was EXACTLY how they described it. It only took about an hour total from opening the boxes to the pool up and running! It really makes me wonder why my pool people here wanted $1200 for a repair that cost less than $300 and 1 hour's worth of work!

I looked up videos on rebuilding the pump. It was very easy and Inyopools had all the parts necessary available to me. I purchased the motor since I had the gasket and seal replacement kit already. It only took removing the 8 bolts and using a 7/16 wrench to hold the shaft in place to remove the impeller. The videos were excellent I just paused until I finished each step. I did watch the entire video first.

I disconnected the mounting and seal plate that houses the motor from the pump. Then I needed to remove the impeller, in order to replace the seal assembly, that I had from a previous purchase from Inyo Pools. Once that was completed, I reassembled in reverse order to include the new motor. finally, I reconnected motor to the pump. It operates like a dream and runs smoothly and quietly.

Very straight forward process for any pool owner. Pay attention to orientation and details when removing so when installing new motor..just reverse order.
1. Shut off power to pump at breaker. Open pump/drain screws to drain any water.
2. Disconnect bonding wire by loosening screws on top of motor.
3. Remove 4 bolts holding motor in place.
4. Pull motor from housing.
5. Remove back motor housing cap to disconnect wiring. Pay attention to terminal connections and voltage selection to ensure reinstall is the same.
6. Good time to check and replace/lube all gaskets.
7. Reverse process to reinstall pump.
8. Might be beneficial to add some-water to lines so pump primes easily.
Check for leaks.

It's Memorial day, 80 degrees, a beautiful day and we take the winter cover off and the water is green. we need to get things cleaned up, get the pump and filter working and get the water circulating. OK, cleanup is done fire it up! What the .........the pump is frozen up and WILL NOT MOVE.
I worked on it for 2 or more hours IT WILL NOT TURN!!! Son of a...... gun. We need to order a pump motor. My wife called a certain pool company and they screwed up the whole order. She canceled them and called INYOPOOLS. She ordered a new motor and some chemicals and stuff.
The chemicals came 1st and we had to wait a few days for the motor as the water was getting greener and greener. It finally came got it all in order and is working great and was swimming again today. The info and tips you sent were a big help too.
Thanks Inyopools!!!

I removed the motor from the pump housing according to the instruction manual for the Hayward Superpump. You have to carefully lay out the parts as you remove them. The impeller was the most difficult to unscrew, but it came off as per the manual. I used a new Hayward shaft seal as I put the parts back together in the correct sequence. Rewired the new motor and tested for leaks. It took more than an hour to get it up and running again. I have purchased a new motor to have on the shelf for future use.

1. Determined that the pool pump motor was the source of the breaker tripping.
2. Ordered and received new replacement motor from Inyo Pools, ordering was easy shipping time was reasonable as expected.
3. Bought new gasket set.
4. Re-wired the pump house switch box line to the motor.
5. Installed new gasket set on motor and then installed motor. Prep, wiring, install took about 3 hours including the new wiring. GFI breaker doesn’t trip anymore sporadically, pool motor stays running, pool motor runs nearly silent now and the pool is finally open here.

I started by removing the motor from the box. I then Inspected the item for any visible damage. I removed the old motor from the pump. Having both motors side by side I removed the impeller, and the back of the pump housing to the motor replacing any seals as I put the parts back on. I reinstalled the parts back onto the new motor. After that was done I checked the output of the electricity and switched the motor accordingly. I reinstalled the new motor to the pump, tightened everything down and filled the pump up with water. I then turned on the electricity checked the pump for any leaks and made sure the motor ran ok.

Before replacing the motor I cut the power off first. I also took pictures before I took the motor off and then when I took the Impala off so I could have a picture to go back and reference at anytime. Then I removed two screws on the end cap and unhooked the wires. Then I removed four bolts holding the motor to the housing. Then I replace the seals. It's always a good idea 2 replace the seals when you remove the motor for any reason . To do that I had to stop the impeller from turning by sticking a screwdriver in the end and then using my other hand to turn the impeller . Then I replaced the seals. Be sure to take note how the seals come off so you can put them back on the right way . I screwed the four bolts back in to connect the motor back to the housing. I hooked up my wires backup and then screwed the end cap back on. Cut the power on and it purred like a kitten!

I turned off breaker to pump; removed 4 bolts that held motor in place. opened back end of pump motor , took a picture of wiring for future reference. Disconnected wiring , took old and new pumps to workbench , discharged capacitor to avoid getting shocked, loosened screw holding it in place to allow me access to the motor shaft. This allowed me to use a 7/16" wrench to hold the shaft so I could remove the impeller from the front end of motor using slip joint pliers and turning impeller CCW. removed the parts of the impeller assembly. To remove the last piece remove 4 bolts which held the impeller assembly to the motor. turn the last piece of the impeller assembly over and use a flat tipped screwdriver to remove the ceramic ring. (when ordering pump also order bearing and seal kit.) after replacing bearings and seals reassemble everything in reverse order check your wiring picture and make sure to rewire correctly. Turn on breaker and prime your pump and turn it on.

Turn off the Breaker! Disconnect wires under motor end cap. Unbolt motor from pump housing. Remove the funnel shaped housing that covers the impeller. You the slide an open end wrench on the motor shaft at the opposite end of the motor. Not the impeller end. You have to do this between a couple of the electrical components, but it’s not hard. Just work your way around until you find good access. There are wrench flats on the motor shaft. I think it’s a 7/16 wrench. Hold the shaft and unscrew the impeller counter clockwise with your hand. Remove the old shaft seal from the housing with a screw driver. Install the new seal . Make sure you have the selector switch on the motor set to you correct voltage. The motor ships set for 220v. Reassemble everything in reverse using a new seal kit. You may want to lay out everything in the order that you took it apart to ease putting it back together. Pay attention to how the shaft seal goes on.

My brother first thought the capacitor was dead, but we put in a new one, and it didn't help. He told us that we needed a new motor, and that he could take off the old one, keeping the frame. So we took a picture of the motor's specs and searched for the best price online. I found yours on your site, ordered it on 9/22/17, and it was delivered on 9/26/17. After confirming the correct pump needed with INYO, I placed the order adding the seal kit recommended. I took on this case motivated by wanting to save over $ 300.00 from two local pool shops quotes. After watching the INYO Pools tutorial video twice I started. About three hours later it was time for the moment of truth. With a flick of the breaker and the timer switch we were back in business. The process could not have been explained any simpler than it was. INYO was right there next to me every step of the way. I used the video on my smart phone and paused it after each step to make sure I was doing it correctly. Thank you very much for providing the expert installation instructions and the online support I needed for the "Bonding Wire". I had no clue what that was but your web site resolved the questions and I finished the job.

I watched the video on the disassembling of the pump motor to see if it was doable on my part which I'm happy to report it was. I then called INYO Pools to make sure I was ordering the right motor. I also ordered a new impeller and seal kit to complete the rebuild. The tech at INYO Pools was also very helpful and told me to call if I ran into any problems. I'm happy to report everything fit perfect and it took about 2 hrs to complete.

My old pump motor failed after 8 years. This motor is a direct replacement to the original so all the electrical connections are identical making installation very simple. The only critical watch out was that the motor is set to 220 volt hook-up at the factory and I had to turn a dial to 110 volt hook-up. There was a warning label that this had to be done.

My old motor was super noisy at the end of last season so I purchased a 'rebuild kit' for it but unfortunately bolts started snapping off when I attempted to take it apart. I sure wish I had just ordered this motor instead of spending money on a rebuild kit. I was pleasantly surprised at the price of this AND it's 1/4 more horsepower than my old motor. Very easy to install myself and it was up and running in almost no time. This pump is super powerful with the new PVC pipes I put in last year. Looking down at the view window on the pump filter, it doesn't even look like it's running until you look really hard and see a vortex of power in there. No air bubbles at ALL. The only thing you need to watch out for is the amperage setting on the motor. Mine came set at 235 and 'clicked' when I first turned it on. One small turn of a nut and I changed it to 115 and it purrs like a kitten.

Reviewed By: Dale J. from Alabaster, AL ()
Pros: Quiet operation

This is the quietest inground pool pump I have ever heard. I used to install swimming pool pumps. Out of all the pumps I ever installed this one is by far the quietest. Besides being quiet it does a great job circulating the water in our pool.

Reviewed By: Jim F. from Florence, AL ()
Pros: Excellent Service and support from Inyo
Cons: Moderately difficult installation for noobs
OK, I did something stupid during the installation of my motor (long story) and burned it out despite Inyo's excellent installation videos. $170 bucks down the drain, right? Wrong. Inyo staff took very good care of me and shipped me another motor at no cost. You simply can't beat that level of service. THANK YOU, Inyo. I'm building a new house soon and you will have my business.

(3 out of 5 stars) Product Received from Century Motor not AO Smith
Reviewed By: Robert C. from CT ()
Pros: Price, delivery, fit
Cons: durability?
It is clearly labeled and sold as AO Smith. I received a box and motor from Century Motor made in China. It is not AO Smith but a generic brand. I attempted to buy a product with "AO Smith" Brand name on it. My original motor was made by AO Smith not by Century and was labeled as such. While this fits and is working, only time will tell if this product will last ten years like the real AO Smith motor did. I will know by 2024 if I still own this home or if the motor fails before then! I had a great experience with the real AO Smith product and now have to "HOPE" for the same with this Chinese product. Feels like a "bait and switch" to me.
