Gas Type

Natural Gas (NG) is the most common gas type used in pool heaters because of its convenience and wide availability in most residential areas. For regions without natural gas service, you can use Propane (LP) fired heater. These heaters require large propane tanks (250 gallons or bigger) to be installed on-site to fuel the heater.

Ignition Type

Electric Ignition (IID) heaters are the standard for new pool heater installations; their spark start mechanism is similar to a gas-fired stove or grill. Electronic ignition pool heaters are required for applications in high-wind areas. The older-style but still available Millivolt Ignition (MV) pool heaters use a standing pilot light to fire the heater. The millivolt ignition has fallen out of favor due to pilot light concerns. Heat Exchanger

The heat exchanger is the metal manifold that sits over the pool heater’s burners, and through which the water flows. Copper is the basic metal for pool heat exchangers; these can be used in traditional chlorine pools. Copper heat exchangers cannot be used in saltwater pools, not in applications with drastic changes in water chemistry. Cupro-Nickel heat exchangers are salt-pool friendly, as they are made of a more durable copper and nickel alloy. Atmospheric & Low Emissions (Low-NOx)

Some states, like California, require that all new pool heater applications must be rated as a low emissions or LowNox design. Some pool heaters like the Hayward Universal H-Series come standard as Low-NOx design, whereas the RayPak model has specific designs for Low-NOx options.

High Altitude

Heaters require a constant supply of oxygen to work efficiently and safely; that is why they have a listed elevation range in which they can be safely installed. For example, the Hayward Universal H-Series is up to 10,000 ft elevation, Pentair MasterTemp is up to 9,000 feet and the standard Raypak is up to 2,000 ft for standard models, but offers high altitude models capable of installations of up to 9,000 ft. What is a Pool Heat Pump?

The Pool Heat Pump is the way to go if you’re looking for a more efficient alternative to a gas-fired pool heater. A pool heat pump operates similarly to your home’s A/C heat pump, but in reverse, adding heat to the water instead of removing it. Heat/Chill heat pump variants also cool your water for those super hot summer days. Heat pumps feature a titanium heat exchanger, which makes them perfect for traditional chlorine or saltwater pools. Heat pumps are ideal in warmer states, especially for pool owners wanting to extend their pool season. Due to their design, most heat pumps cannot operate in ambient air temps below 60 degrees.
