Occasionally your GVA-24 Goldline/Hayward Pool Actuator will malfunction. This guide shows you how to resolve some of the issues that prevent your Valve Actuator from performing correctly.
ACTUATOR HANDLE OSCILLATES - If you see the handle on your Actuator oscillating back and forth, it may be that the Actuator's two O-rings are not lubricated sufficiently. See our guide on "How To Maintain a Goldline/Hayward Pool Valve Actuator" for further instructions.
Step 2
ACTUATOR RUNS BUT VALVE DOES NOT TURN - If you see that the Actuator Motor is running freely but the diverter valve does not turn, the Actuator Shaft is probably in manual mode and the gear train in the Actuator is disengaged. To engage the gear train, pull up on the Handle and rotate the Handle until it clicks. Then tighten the Locking Knob.
Step 3
ACTUATOR DOES NOT RUN - If the Actuator does not turn over, first check that the Actuator Toggle Switch is in one of the "ON" positions - either ON1 or ON2. Then use a multimeter to check the voltage to the Actuator. If there is no power to the Actuator, check the 24V power source. If you do see the power to the Actuator, the motor in your Actuator may have failed and will have to be replaced.
BAD SWITCHES - There are two SS-5GL13T switches that cut off power when the valve hits its final position. If either of these switches fails, it can stop the actuator from moving. Replace the faulty switch..
There is a leak somewhere in the system and the water is still leaking through the system & down he evestrough even when off. What causes this and how to fix.

Are you dealing with a leak from a solar panel? An eavestrough is an element of roof drainage.I can't tell you what caused a leak in a solar panel or whatever element of your plumbing. But the main concern is stopping the leak. have you gotten eyes on the equipment to try to trace the leak?

need to know if you can turn Goldline gva-24 manually. Rabbit ate thru wire.

Yes, you can turn it manually. But since the wire is chewed threw, you may as well remove actuator, and install the handle directly onto the valve stem.

is it possible to replace the wiring without replacing the whole actuator? I had something chew through my wire too.

My actuator was not turning open or close according to set temperature on Aqua Star control box. I read this forum a nd was looking for switches to buy to change. In mean time husband took cover off actuator, loosened screws around switches and retightened them. Wow the actuator is now doing what it is supposed to do. Feeling Great.

My valve turns fully but does not close off completely. When we switch to spa, it continues to draw some water through pool skimmer.
Prevents heater from getting spa to max temp.

Hello Elaine - Have you opened the valve check for any obstructions? Debris or an out of place diverter o-ring may be the cause of this issue.
Reply
Elaine HughstonPosted: 4/10/2019
Yes, that was where I found the problem.
Is there a way to attach/send a photo?
Basically, there is a threaded core that seems to fit into (or protrudes from) the donut that is mounted to the normal valve opening mounted to the the 3 way (T) pvc flow junction.
What appears to "have been" the approx 1" threaded part is completely cracked apart.
Can it be replaced?

Photos cannot be posted on these guide comment threads, but you can email them to upload@inyopools.com. It will be a lot easier understanding the situation once we can see the valve and the broken pieces.

My switch keeps resetting from either ON position to the OFF position. I’m not sure when or why this happens. Any thoughts or suggestions?

SouthernYankee - Here's a schematic that shows you where the switch is and how to get to it. The switch is at the bottom of the schematic. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like we sell that part.

My ON1/OFF/ON2 switch is difficult to move and I think it needs to be replaced. I have two of these valves and only one is behaving like this. Is this switch easy to replace and would you have a part number for a replacement switch?

GVA 24 - the valve is rotating correctly but 180 degrees out of phase. How can I manually move motor so the valve rotates thru the 3 ports correctly?

coolpool - If you can operate the valves manually, it sounds like the gear trains on the actuators are disengaged. See step 2 of this guide to re-engage them.

When pump comes on, neither valve moves. The control panel indicates unit is functioning and heating, but it is not. I can turn return valve manually, but I cannot move actuator valve at all.

The actuator not running could be a failure of one of the stop switches. There are two SS-5GL13T switches that cut off power when the valve hits it's final position. I had a bad switch that stopped the actuator from moving. Changed the switch for a couple of dollars.

Yolok - Moisture may be getting into the cable where it was chewed and may be shorting out intermittently. There is a product at most hardware stores called "Liquid Tape" usually black. Make sure the two wires in the cable are not touching each other, then coat the damaged area with the Liquid Tape.

Hi, I have Goldline actuator. We have many rabbits in Plano, TX area. One of the rabbits chewed cable between actuator and control board. Now I have tied the cable higher up to prevent it from chewing. But when I click spa button on control board, the valve turns sometimes & other times it's won't. When it does not turn I try on 1, off, on2 but no luck. This happens intermittent. Wondering if I need to cut cable between actuator & panel & rejoin. Looks like valve is not issue & connection through chewed cable is issue?? Thanks.

Lake Guy - Your problem may be the valve that the actuator is trying to turn. If it is old and not self-lubricating, it may be too hard for the actuator to turn. Take the actuator off of the valve stem and, using a handle from another valve, see how hard it is to turn. It may have to be replaced. If the valve is good, you may be looking at replacing the actuator.

My actuator turns, but not all the way to where it usually stops. I had to apply pressure to the handle to get it to complete the turn, otherwise it was going only about half way. It almost felt as if the gears were stripped. The unit is about 3yrs old and the other one works fine, so what does this sound like the problem is and do I need to replace it? Thanks much for any insight.

TinA - First make sure that the control line between the actuator and you control panel is plugged in securely at both ends and that there is no apparent break in the line. Then there should be an on/off switch on the underside of the actuator. Make sure that is ON. If you can hear the motor running, you may have a bad actuator motor or loose terminals on either end of the control line. Try jiggling the line at both ends to see if you can get the motor to run. If the motor is running, the gear train in the actuator may not be engaged. To engage the gear train, turn the actuator off, then pull up on the Handle and rotate the Handle until it clicks. Finally, tighten the Locking Knob.

I have an older Goldline GVA-24V, Model JVA2440. The control panel is working fine, but the Jandy Valve handle does not turn. I am able to manually turn handle by loosening nut and pushing down on it, but doesn't turn on its own. Unless I am crazy, I have not been able to locate an auto/off/manual switch on this particular model. Any suggestions
