Most of the older incandescent and halogen pool lights can be changed to the newer LED color changing lights by replacing the entire light fixture. But there are a limited number of old lights that can be converted to LED light by simply replacing the old light fixture bulb with a color changing LED light bulb. This guide shows you how to determine if your light fixture can be converted with a bulb change. Once you have determined if your light fits into this class, click on this link for instructions on "How to Upgrade Your Pool Light To an LED Color Changing Light".

Step 1

LED BULB DISCUSSION – As stated above, a limited number of light fixtures can be converted to LED lighting by simply changing the light bulb. The light fixture must be large enough to accommodate the LED bulb and the old incandescent bulb must have an Edison base –like a standard household bulb. An LED light is very cost efficient. Most use less than 45 Watts compared to the 300-500 Watts used by the old incandescent bulbs – an up to 85% savings. The LED color changing bulbs generate from 5-7 separate colors which can be blended and programmed to produce a number of automated color sequences. They are also available in white light only for those customers where local codes require white light – mostly commercial pools.  In brightness, the LED bulbs produce light that is equivalent to a 300 to 400 Watt incandescent bulb depending on the color. White and yellow light is generally equivalent to a 400W bulb; the darker blue and red lights are equivalent to a 300W bulb. These bulbs come in both 12V and 120V.  Either option generates the same brightness. The rest of this guide discusses the specific LED bulbs currently available and shows which incandescent light fixtures are compatible. Once you have selected your bulb, go you our guide on "How to Upgrade Your Pool Light To an LED Color Changing Light".
