This is Poolside Chat where every week we answer your questions on how to fix and maintain your swimming pool. Poolside Chat is presented by INYOPools.com, helping pool owners find the right parts since 2001. Now here’s your host – Matt and Rob.
In today’s episode of Poolside Chat, Rob and Matt tackle another common swimming pool question:
- How do I choose the correct Gasket Kit for my pool pump?

Tune-up kits aka Go-Kits contain a pump’s lid O-ring, housing O-ring, diffuser O-ring, and a shaft seal to keep your pump watertight and running right. Let’s jump to the viewer question of the week.
“I’m replacing my UST1072 pool pump motor and would like to replace the seals. Which tune–up kit do I need?”
-Brian in Morristown, TN
Unfortunately, Brian, there is no universal kit for your UST1072 motor. The correct pool pump gasket kit for your motor installation is determined by the make and model of your pool pump’s housing and not the motor. A replacement motor is used on dozens of pump models and the seals needed for each pump will differ. To determine the correct gasket kit, we need to identify your pool pump. The best ways to identify your pool pump are:
- Pump Model Number
- Part number from the strainer lid, pump basket, impeller, diffuser or seal plate
The quickest way in identifying your pool pump is to find the model number on the pump’s housing. The pool pump’s model number is usually on a small silver tag with the simple title of “Pump Model Number” to identify it. The format of the model number will vary according to manufacturer. Once you have the pump model number, you can enter it into Inyo’s search to find the correct parts breakdown, listing your pump parts and kits.
If your pump’s label is missing or bleached out by the sun, try finding a part number off the pump’s strainer lid, basket, impeller, diffuser, or seal plate. These parts are sometimes used on a few pump models, but a review of the listed parts breakdown will help you ID your particular pump.
But if none of those aforementioned numbers help in your search to identify your pump, you can always give us a call or email us, and we can help identify it for you. The phone number to call is 877-372-6038, and the email is upload@inyopools.com. Just send a picture or just an overview of the pump and we can help identify it. We’re basically the Colombo of pools; we can identify anything just by a couple of pictures. So if you can’t do it yourself, we’ll do it for you.
Thank you for the question, Brian.

This has been fantastic, educational, and enlightening. He’s been yin; I’ve been yang. Byyye.
All I’m looking for is 2″ hose clamp gaskets (“L gaskets”? “flange” gaskets?) –I don’t know what they’re called but everyone uses them and nobody sells them. You can’t help but lose them but I guess the sellers can make more money by making you buy the whole assembly rather than just the gasket. –AGF
If this is for a specific pump, we would need to know the make and model of the pump to find the correct gasket. The same goes whether it is for a filter, chlorinator, heater or automatic cleaner, we would have to ID the unit it goes to for a match. Otherwise, it is kind of a needle in the haystack situation.
how do i know which way to place a shaft seal
There are two things you can do. First, when you are removing the old shaft seal, take note how it is orientated. is the white ceramic piece on the impeller side or the seal plate?
If you already removed the shaft seal, not noting how it was installed, then you might be able to tell by the look of it. if your shaft seal looks like the one below, with the stainless steel cuff on the spring side, then that piece fits into the seal plate. While the white ceramic piece sits on the impeller. If your shaft seal’s spring side does not have a cuff then the seal oriented the other way.
hello.
I have new multi-port valve 7 functions my question is what could be wrong ON filter and still throw water through the waste port at the same time thank you
Hello Juan, thank you for the question. Have you opened the valve to check for a bad spider gasket or a loose diverter spring? If your handle has a jiggle, then it is likely a bad spring.
As with most things, you will not know the true issue until you open up the valve. Before you do so, read our How-to guides on the topics I mentioned above:
